f.lrlr-.in giwliiiil 1 ' V Language Students Visit France and Mexico Three students from Red River, Jim Goodman, Jean Miller, and Kay Kochenderfer, spent two weeks in France this spring travelling with a travel-study group from Minnesota. They toured the country by bus and saw such sites as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Arc of Triomph, Cathedral at Chartres, Notre Dame, Mt. St. Michel, and Versailles. They spent four days of their trip with a French family in Nantes, where they learned about many French customs and the French way of life. Twelve Spanish students are looking forward to a trip to Mexico, beginning Monday, June 4th. They are Jeanne Axtman, Shelly Bachmeir, Tina Bakke, Linda Burkhard, Debbie Curtis, Becky Lukkason. Mary lhlan, Mary Krantz, Ann Miller, Margie Smith, Debbie Schroeder, and Julie Vaaler. One of their main reasons for going is for personal enjoyment and to pick up a little suntan. About 1!3 of their group has taken 2 or more years of Spanish so it will be interesting to see how well they can communicate. It will also be interesting to compare the differences between the American and Mexican culture and people. A. Jean Miller and Kay Kochenderfer. B. ROW 1: Tina Bakke, Ann Miller, Becky Lukkason. ROW 2: Margie Smith, Linda Burkhard, Julie Vaaler, Mr. Schuler. tip language trips 81 GAG I iw. l

Marike Spends Year at Red River When I first decided to spend a year in the United States, I naturally applied to go to Florida or California. Instead I found myself in Grand Forks-a place I had never even heard of. Nevertheless I had a really good year at Red River. I enjoyed spending time with foreign kids in and outside the school and it was a great experience to go to an American High School. I think I have learned a lot and I will take a lot of memories with me to the Netherlands. Going to games was a new experience for me. because we don't have activities like that in High School in the Netherlands. I had lots of fun being in The Serpent . too. Going on trips with members of the student council, National Honor Society, and Speech and Debate club was some- thing new for me too. You get to know a lot of kids from different schools with different school systems. When I just came here with my four years of English I thought I would get along pretty good. But as soon as I found out I didn't understand very much became of all the slangs you use I knew I would have a hard time to catch on. One way that what I've learned about American English will help me when I get home will be in understanding the words of the American music we listen to there. Before I liked the music but it was hard to understand what the lyrics meant. Now that I have had this experience here I would like to see more students go to a foreign country and learn about their life. In that way people from different nations would understand each other better. I would like to thank Mr. Knutsvig and Mr. Bucher for giving me the chance to experience the American School system, and the teachers for helping me with my school work when I had problems. l'Il never forget this year and the people I got to know. Thank you all for your friendship. Liefs, Marike Joustra -QT---li-7, V- - .. ,If . , slid' I a,.j.,I , glifffiell' II m 'swf ' U, N . I If 11, ..
