Itslttholes y '82 in evlew I survived the winter of ,82,' reads a popular bumper sticker. The winter of '82 was one to remember - ice, snow Arctic winds with -70 degree wind chills, deep drifts - and 8 snow days! However, there were many other memorable events around the state, the nation, and the world during the 81-82 school year. Some of those events were disheartening, the world seemed to be in a state of perpetual unrest. El Salvador looked, for awhile, like another Viet Namg Poland was under martial law, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated, and another attempt was made on the life of the Popeg war in the Falklands seemed inevitable, and closer to home - and our pocketbooks - were the continuing recession, the rising unemplyment, and the constant debate over Reaganomics. Not all the news was bleak: the Columbia space shuttles had continued successg women across the country cheered the appointment of Sandra Day O'Conner to the Supreme Courtg the Royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Din was followed by a royal pregnancy. While wearing our Calvin Klein jeans and Izod shirts we amused - and confused - ourselves with the Rubik Cube or we fell victim to Pac-Man Fever. We watched movies like 'lRaiders of the Lost Ark and 6sOn Golden Pondl' and, when we could arrange an afternoon at home, we watched General Hospital. 1982 - well into a new decade - a decade in which we will Hgrow up to face the challenges - and the promises - of life on this planet called Earth. That is, involvement with businesses, community, school and other FBLA members on the local, state and national levels. In keeping with this theme members participated in the National FBLA leadership Conference in Chicago in July of l98l. Red Oak and the state of Iowa elected Pat Boylan as the National Treasurer of FBLA. This was the first national officer from Red Oak. The chapter also received the Gold Seal Award for being one of the outstanding chapters in the nation. Other conferences attended by the members included the fall leadership Development Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the Iowa Leadership Conference in Maquoketag and the Iowa State Conference in Cedar Falls. Two state officers were elected at the l98l State meeting. Joe Edmondson has been serving as the Iowa FBLA State Treasurer and Joe Poertz is the state Parliamentarian. Activities of the chapter included several fund-raisers, Red Oak Chamber of Commerce membership, Red Oak Junction Days, Crazy Days Promotion, Warehouse Sale and Antique Auto Days. The members ran the pop corn wagon during the summer as a money management project. New chapters were installed at Glenwood and Lewis Central. A Business Leaders Breakfast attended by over 70 people was held in Feb. to thank the business community for their support and to celebrate National FBLA Month. Members serving as local chapter officers were: Linda Harold, Presidentg Joe Portz, Vice-Presidentg Diane Bruce, Secretaryg Kim Heuer, Treasurerg Barb Gillespie, Reporterg Jeff Bullinton, Parliamentarian. Working together day by day If you have wondered where half the senior class was halfthe day, here is the answer. Trades and Industry and Diversified Occupations give students the opportunity to experience the real world of work. For one half of their Senior year these students have been working as sales clerks, receptionists, lab technicians, mechanics and repairmen. Many will find a field that will become their lifetime occupation. The program, under the direction of Mr. Dick Morrison, has proven very successful and each year more and more students have taken part. The community, in spite of unfavorable economic times, has been supportive. The job stations are more than mere labor positions and often the trainee uses highly sophisticated tools and machines not available within the school. More than forty participated this year.
