Torrence directing young minds and hands in the construction of chair s, tables, bookcases, footstools, and what-have-you ---these to be proudly presented to Mom for Christmas. Not only do we find Mr. Torrence's efficiency in the teaching of industrial arts but it comes into play in the summer when he works in the capacity of building and ground supervisor. It is then that he directs the face-lifting of classrooms for fall classes. What does he do in his spar e- time? Having previously been coach, he is called upon to referee out-of-town football and basketball games. For a num- ber of years he coached and sponsored the high school golf team. Mr, Torrence came to Red Oak in 1942 as P.E. instructor. He taught math fr om 1943-1946, when industrial arts was added to his teaching chores. Mechanical drawing entered the picture at a later date and occupied part of his time until 1960. He is a graduate of Iowa State Teacher's College and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from that institution. He is a member of Bethlehem Luth- eran Church of Red Oak. We are pleased to dedicate the 1965 PEP to Mr. Torrenceandto. Let's get it over with, The complete golfer ....and watch your fingers. Primed for the days activities. Laughing all the way to the bank? . . Mr. Eugene Hamilton Even before students have enter ed biology class, they become aware that the figure moving about the halls wearinga frock coat, will some day be their biology teacher. He is, of course, Mr.Hamilton, who came to us as football and basketball coach in 1944, He served as assistant coach from 1946-1948, in addition to being P.E. instructor. In 1948, Mr. Hamilton resigned to take a position as salesman. Though successful in this field, teaching proved to be too much of a lure to him and he returned to us in 1953. He taught general science and bookkeeping. At present biology takes up all of his time, In his spare moments, he co-sponsors the Junior Class. We find him the central figure in the concession booth at every home football game. His is a rigorous and demanding job. It takes hours of planning, scheming, and prod- ding to secure funds for an elaborate Junior-Senior each year. Mr. Hamilton has escorted future biologists and geologists on three biology trips, which have taken them to Yellowstone Park, the Gr and Tetons, and the Grand Canyon. He is a graduate of Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa, from which he holds a Bachelor of Science degree. He has done graduate work at Iowa State University on a science scholariship granted him two years ago. Mr. Hamilton is a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Red Oak. Perlinaiinn And just about the time EUGENE HAMILTON ifiintly How long is a half-century .... from high-button shoes, model-TFords, one-room schools, grapho- phones, muddy dirt streets to Dior creations, streamlined limousines, jet planes, super highways, TV, and the Space Age. A half-century ago, the first Pep was edited within the walls of the present Junior High School. The building had been an elegant structure in its day--erected in 1898 at a cost of 317, 000, it covered an area of 75 feet by 78 feet. But with progress comes inevitable changes. As the city of Red Oak expanded and the population grew, the enrollment increased. The high school building with its bulging walls relinquished its status to the present high school. Now its walls are feeling the strain of a greater enrollment as a result of re- r organization. We trust that soon a sparkling new structure will set the stage for an exciting half- century in the offing. The history of the Pep parallels 50 years of change and progress in our high school and the sur- rounding community. PAGES FROM THE 1915 PEP . Public Speaking work was a special feature of high school activities in those days. Of the 235 pupils enrolled in high school, '70 of them participated in this activity. They were said to have surpassed those of most high schools in Iowa. Functions in this event were well at- tended and competition with other schools in this vicinity was keen. A band had not yet been organized- -the Glee Club made up the music activities. They furnished the entertainment preceding the debates and declamations. ln the sports field, football, basketball, and baseball prevailed. The girls' team remained unde- feated: the boys' lost only two games. The football team won all but two of their games. Track, tennis, cross- country, and golf were added to the sports activities in recent years. It has been a most interesting half-century and a peek into the crystal ball indicates that the next 50 years will be even more exciting! To his pastor he was a thoughtful, serious, young member of the Presbyterian Church. To his fellow students he was a shy, slim boy with a friendly smile. Mike had two favorite hobbies, traveling and building models of planes and ships that were involved in service during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He did research on these planes and boats, compiling their entire histories. He enjoyed traveling and had traveled in eighteen of our states and Canada. He especially loved the mountains, and would climb up into the rocky heights and take extensive hikes. He enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of nature. Whether we knew him well, or only slightly, we will miss this sixteen year-old boy and keep his memory warm, and be glad we knew him even for so short a time. .g. . l 0.0.0. . .. . . .Oo ... . .- Q- 3 .-. The American Field Service is a private educational organization which has specialized on the teenage level since 1947. It is a peacetime program to further the basic friendship which exists among all men. Our ninth exchange student, Sergio Zannini, comes to us from Los Sauces, a suburb of San Jose, Costa Rica. The Reverend Harold Sibleys are his American family during his stay in Red Oak. Sergio attended Liceo de Costa Rica before coming to America. Before graduating from his high school in Costa Rica, Sergio states that he will be required to take final examinations over his 6 months schooling before coming to America and the 6 months after leaving ROCI-IS. He would like to major in aviation when he goes to the university --electronics is his next choice of vocations. Sergio is favorable impressed with our country. He has fallen victim to our hamburgers and hot dogs, but says he misses tortillas and rice from -his home kitchen. Carol writes about her trip to Chile as a foreign exchange student: My AFS summer in Chile was wonderful It was so easy to love the friendly, good humored people and their beautiful country. One of their customs that I liked best was hugging every- body when you greeted them. I also enjoyed eating four meals a day and attending their lively parties, that lasted until about six in the morning! I loved my family, the Pobletes, very much. By living with them in Concepcion, Chile, for ten weeks, I learned their way of living, their language, and their hopes for world peace. For me, the AFS motto has come true: Walk together, talk together, O ye Peoples of the earth, and have Peace. Carol Fifield Her Chilean Family, the Pobletes K' ':ffff::.. . . .. The 1964-65 ROCHS Student Council under the sponsorship of Mr. Tock, has proceeded with the idea of doing things differently. Under the leadership of president, Curt Lantz, the group added many new ideas. Renewing the idea of having a homecoming pa- rade was the first. This, along with the other activi- ties of homecoming, proved to be a great success. From the Suggestion Box came the idea of having a Christmas card tree which was given to the Salvation Army. A mystery Santa Claus and a locker decoration contest were also held. Meetings with the faculty were held to discuss the relationship between the teachers and the students. A new victory bell and the continuing of the VIT Board were also part of the Student Council's work. This proved to be an active year for the Council. This year the Vocal Music Department, under the direction of Mr. Nelson, has played an important role in school activi- ties. As we can tell, the members of this department have been very busy. They loved it, too! On October 31, six quartets from the Senior Choir auditioned for the A 11 State Chorus. The quartet of Connie White, Diane Bergren, Bob Baldwin, and Phil Anderson were accepted, taking part November 28 in Des Moines. Highlights of this year came in November with the Fall Con- cert and December with the Christmas Vespers Program. Much pleasure was given to the community by these vocal music pre- sentations. Making its annual journey to Shen on February 9, the Senior Choir joined other choirs in presenting the Shenandoah Music Festival. On March 18 8: 19, the delightful musical Bye-Bye Birdie was presented by the Freshman Chorus. The Senior Choir participated in Small and Large Group Contests on April 13 and May 1. The Southwest Teachers Convention was entertained on April 5 by the Senior Choir. Red Oak was host to the Iowa State Singers, under the direction of Robert McCowan. Their beauti- ful singing added a touch of culture to our city. Likewise, our Acorn may be small and one of thousands tial and power. The Acorn--now in its 75th year--has two main purposesg first to create a better understanding between teacher and student, and second to record the history of the school. Many hours of preparation go into each issue of the Acorn. From the time the page editors decide upon stories, to the final proofing, every one on the staff must put forth the utmost effort to make a paper of which our school can be proud. In order to publish the paper, the Acorn staff must raise needed funds Staff members do everything from selling popcorn to managing the Book Nook . The Acorn is a powerful tool, for not only does it represent the stu- Kay Mueller, Editor-in-Chief dents, and the school itself, but more importantly the community. Many students interested in dramatic and speech contest functions find enjoyment in this club. They have monthly meetings at which they dream up various money making projects and put on skits for their own experience and entertainment. Many Jesters go on to become Thespian members. This is, however, only part of the reward of belonging to this junior dramatics group. It also helps to give a person confidence and poise. A branch of the YWCA, and sponsored by Miss Klopping, Y-Teens welcomes any high school girl that wishes to be- come a member. Regular meetings are held every month and programs are planned to fit the interests of the girls. Adopting an orphan from the Christian Home in Council Bluffs is an annual project. This year they adopted five year old Janis and six year old Byron and sent them gifts each month and for special occasions. Other service projects have been to send gift certificates to the needy at Thanksgiving and buying a suit of clothes for two needy children. Social events include the Dad-Daughter Banquet every fall and the Mother-Daughter each spring. This year Y-Teens also sponsored a no-date party, and a talent show. At the end of each school year, a S100 scholarship is given to some deserving senior girl planning to go on to college. Funds for paying expenses are raised by selling candy, Y- Teen tags, and football programs. Sponsored by COLE'S JEWELRY STORE 0 G QRHQEIITQ ume1:nI11iUB 7 nufhzxll The 1964 Tiger Football Team greatly improved upon last year's 2-6 record and ended the season with a 6-3 mark. In- cluded in this year's campaign were victories over Harlan, Glenwood, Clarinda, St. Joseph Benton, Corning, and Griswold, coupled with defeats at the hands of Creston, Shen, and Atlantic. A formidable defense and well-balanced offense provided the Tigers with their .early wins. A mid-season slack destroyed Tiger hopes of a conference title. The team rallied toward the end of the year to defeat two of their last three opponents and close the season with a fourth place finish in the conference. We regret that Coach Benda decided to retire this year. His retirement ends a successful 14 year coaching career. The Tigers who were fortunate enough to have him as a coach would like to thank him for his contributions to the school and to the p players themselves. . Now we have time to recover from some of the scrapes, bruises, and cuts that we have received in volleyball and basketball. At times it has been rough, but we learn to take the bad with the good. Intramural sports was introduced to ROCHS in 1958. Under the direction of Mr. Morrison and the Intramural Commission, policies, rules, and regulations were set up for the intramural activities of the school. They were the governing body. Intramural, meaning within the walls stresses equal competition. Each student has an equal chance to participate on athletic teams and events that are otherwise not included in the inter-scholastic athletics. Varsity athletes may participate in the intramural program when their sports are not in season. Awards are presented to each member of the winning teams in team competition and each individual in single and doubles competition.
