C t 5 S MRS LEONA RODENBURG ll!!! Dedication Dedicotion It is with deep pleasure that we dedicate the 1962 Pep to Mrs. Housrnan. Our training under her guidance in Journalism is put into practice through the edition of our school paper, The Acorn , which she has successfully sponsored for the past twelve years. After a lapse of many years, Quill and Scroll was revived under the sponsorship of Mrs. Housman three years ago. For two years she sponsored the TCC, a choral reading club that stemmed from a Remedial Reading class that was added to her already heavy English schedule. We are taught in her class to read and interpret American Literature. To aid us in a more thorough study, we delve into the periods of American history that we may appreciate the living conditions and trend of times that inspired writers of prose and poetry. For several years Mrs. Housman has included a study of vocations for English Ill students. Many of her students have become successful becausea wise teacher started them 'thinking about their futures in time to prepare for them. Mrs. Housman is a member of the Methodist Church, the Altrusa Club, and the AAUW. She spends most of her summer vacations working as cashier in the Houghton State Bank, where she proves that wise vocational planning provides a fuller, more rounded life. She has shown that good teachers practice what they teach. . .but wait. there is a teachers meeting at 8:15 .... 9 fir f . . .and a deadline to be met on The Acorn . . . 1w hs m5,g a.. -it Q , 1 ,.f,s,.. The awareness of our Board of Education to meet the needs of the increasing number of young people seeking an education is shown in their plans for a new high school. Land has been purchased for the site of the new building. Even though we will not be privileged to attend this new high school, it is our hope that it will be one of the finest in Iowa. Scott Killinger, John Davidson, Robert L. Bob McKenzie, Paul Dutton, A. B. Ogland, Aage Anderson, Mrs. Max Naylor, President, Aciministrlotion When Red Oak High School consolidated in 1961-62 and became Red Oak Community High School, we gained 200 new students and one new Superintendent. Many new problems also arose due to the increased enrollment, but Mr. Ogland has met them with quick, decisive action. Since our enrollment has changed and grown, our school policies must also change and grow. Growing pains are often unpleasant for any school, but the end results are important for the future of every student of ROCHS. Mr. Ogland is well-qualified to help our school grow and advance. He received his B.A. degree at the State College of Iowa, his M.A. degree at Ames and has done advanced work at S.U.I. He was also a member of the PDK National Honorary Fraternity. He is a member of the American Association of School Administration, the Iowa Association of School Administration, and the National Education Association. He was past secretary and member of the six-man planning board for the ISEA. 132559 ,, . 121 - f' - ',:, -', ,'--ii tiir f 2 4 '- , 12 . 7 . ' I sUPER1NTENDENT,A.B. MERLE .TENTOFT Secretary Principal Mr. Tock, our principal, has contributed much toward the forward movement of education in our school. Besides taking a local interest in education, he is a member of the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association, and Phi Delta Kappa, an educational fraternity. Mr. Tock has been in the educational field for twenty-three years and is presently working on his Ed. D., Doctor of Education. He stated that he is very pleased with the way that we, as students, are adjusting to our problem of increased enrollment. He is also pleased with the majority of us who have formed good study habits and have good school spirit. We, the Seniors of '62 are proud to have had Mr. Tock as our principal these past four years. PRINCIPAL, WILLIAM A. TOCK Student Council Sponsor Mr. Tock Vice-President, Gary Brower, President, MaryBar- Iowa Student Council Convention nettg Secretary, Jolene Bergstrom. The Student Council, with Mr. Tock as sponsor, and under the capable leadership of Mary Barnett, has contributed much to the benefit and welfare of our school during .1961-62. After listening to numerous a rg u m e nt s in favor of a new public address system, the Council went into action to remedy the situation. As a' result, ROCHS now boasts of a very good P.A. system which is enjoyed by and used for the benefit of all high school students. Other worthwhile projects which have been undertaken by the Student Council are the decorating of the halls at Christmas time, the sponsoring of religious convocations preceding holidays, and simply trying to satisfy the complaints and wishes of students who see ways to improve ROCHS. Working and striving in the present, thinking of the future, the Student Council has done its share and more in improving and regulating the activities of ROCHS, SEATED: Suzie Kelker, Judy Anderson, Linda Strachan, Pam Funkhouser, Nancy Wright. We, the Seniors of 1962, sincerely hope that in the future years students of ROCHS will be as privileged as we have been in furthering their education with our excellent teaching staff. Their sincere guidance and capable assistance has prepared us to meet the uncertainties of the future with an educated and open mind. We wish to express our appreciation to these teachers for their patience with our short-comings, under- standing of our problems, insistence that we learn as much as we can, and their co-operation with each other that has made our high school education possible. .T AY W. The students of ROCHS would like to take this opportunity to thank you, Mrs. Falk, for 17 years of faithful service as head ofthe lunch room staff. When this lunch program first started, you served about 150 students and teachers each day in the present biology room. Through theyears this program has grown until now about 450 people are served daily. Those of us who eat in the lunch room know the problems that arise in managing the lunch program, such as planning wholesome meals on a strict budget, increased enrollment, and extra students in bad weather. Thanks to your unfailing service and skilled management, Red Oak has one of the finest student lunch programs in Iowa. Bernard Seaburg We, as people, sometimes take things for granted the things other people do for us. When you leave school some evening, just notice the condition of the hall floors, the scraps of paper in the study hall, and the general disorder. The next morning notice that the hall floors are clean, the study hall is cleaned up. and the building made ready for a new day. Who is responsible and sees that the building is maintained properly? A great deal of this task falls to Bernard Seaburg, better known as Bernie , Bernie became custodian in the high school during the school year of 1952- 53. Now he has reached the retirement age and will terminate his services at the end of this year. . Bernie spends his time making our school life more pleasant whether it be cleaning up the building, helping in the lunch room, or telling the fellows a joke. In recognition of this we, the student body, wish to thank him for his faithful service to ROCHS. Cooks Custodions Bus Drivers Cafeteria Staff. . . Time Out For Coffee STANDING C. Haas C, Waldemer N. HUVF J.. .- 'Sl f WUIBBVJ. -iz: r 1 Football The 1961 version of the Red Oak Tiger football team played a successful season, ending with a record of four wins, three losses, and one tie. Two ofthe losses and the tie came in the closing seconds after the Tigers had outplayed the opponents throughout the game. The most heartbreaking defeat of all came at the hands of the league champion, Clarinda, when their fullback scored on the final play of the game. In the Hawkeye Eight league, the Tigers finished in a tie for third place, along with Atlantic, and were rated fifth in Southwest Iowa, by the World Herald newspaper. The tigers were led by the line play of ,Terry Meggison and Bill Artherholt, and by the running of Tom Wright, who was the league scoring champion with11O5 points. There were 17 Tiger lettermen: Bill Artherholt, Jerry Meggison, Tom Wright, Dennis Wiley, Richard Culver, Mike Kinser, .Tim Woods, Jon Waltz, Harry Fields, Dennis Woods, Gary Brower, Randy Sundgren, Steve Johnson, Jerry Tuttle, Bill Stifle, Dave Clayton, and Steve Carson. This is exemplified by a one point loss to Corning in one meeting and an approximately thirty point loss in the second encounter, The Tigers were hampered by having only two returning lettermen, Mike Kinser and Steve Carson, with Carson being injured in mid season. Because this young and inexperienced team fought so courageously at times against high odds, they have won the respect of the opposing teams and the entire student body. Track . la QMS' ll I In 1961 the Tiger track team, under Coach Dick Morrison, literally rewrote the record book for ROCHS. Having the best track season in the history of Red Oak High School, the Tigers set 8 school records, won the Hawkeye eight track championship, and brought home 21 trophies. The team had four of the fastest relay teams in S.W. Iowa, the mile-relay having the fastest time ever recorded in the area. The relay teams were composed of Leonard Kinser, Dave Sellergren, Steve Carson, Tom Wright, and Bob L. Smith. Besides the school records of relay teams Leonard Kinser set the shot put record with a throw of 50 ft. 10 114 ing Bob L. Smith set the 880 yd. dash record in 2:0'7.2. Steve Carson set the records in the 220 yd. dash in 22.1 sec. and the 440 yd. dash record in 51.6 sec. Cars just missed the broad jump record by 114 inch also. Steve led the team scoring for the Tigers with 121 314 points, followed by Leonard Kinser with 101 314 pointsg Tom Wright with '75 112 points, Dave Sellergren with 50 114 points. Leonard broke the record he set last year in the decathlon with 10,685 points. Carson came in a close second less than 500 points behind Kinser. The Tigers were 16th at the State Indoor Meet and tied for 15th at the State Outdoor Meet. In both meets the Tigers competed in double A competition. At the Drake Relays, the Bengals scored 8 points. The team won five track meets: Cardinal Relays, Cyclone Relays, Trojan Relays, Graceland Invitational, and most important, the Hawkeye Eight Meet. In their three other meets the Bengals came in second each time. The Tigers ended the season leading the S.W. Iowa scoring chart put out by the Omaha World Herald. The 1960 Tiger track team was truly an outstanding group of athletes. It will not be forgotten in the record books nor by the school for a long time to come. In the second year of play after a long absence from the high school sports, the Red Oak Tennis Team, coached by Eugene Whiteman, came out of the season quite creditably. The 1961 Tennis squad consisted of 15 members. Of these, three seniors and three underclassmen received letters. ln a match with Abraham Lincoln High School of Council Bluffs, Bill Allen and Bob Houghton each won two singles matches, and .Tud Isebrands and Daryl Halquist won a doubles match. In two doubles matches played with Bedford, Halquist and Isebrands won one, and Dave Warren and Randy Sungren won the other, In State Competition the tennis team did very well. Allen won the district singles title, and at the State meet was beaten by the State singles runner-up, Warren and Sungren went to district semi-finals competition, and Isebrands and Halquist got to district final competition. With the three returning lettermen, Warren, Sungren and Houghton, Coach Whiteman is looking for a good season for the 1962 season.
