It is with great pleasure and admiration that we dedicate the 1959 Pep to you, Miss Altaffer. We, who have taken shorthand, bookkeeping or typing, know you as one of the finest persons in ROHS. Under Your firm but pleasant guidance, we have learned the all-important skills that are so essential to everyday Life. We shall be ever grateful to you for your understanding of us, your students, our memories of our year in typing cannot be better expressed than by this excerpt from a poem by John Masefield: Attending Teacher's Meeting . . Then the black-bright, smoth-running, clicking clean, Brushed, oiled and dainty typewriting machine, With tins of ribbons waiting for the blows Which soon will hammer them to verse and prose. She likes to picnic, too . . . . Miss A1taffer's attractive apart- ment is furnished in Early American. She likes to curl up on the sofa and read a good book, a favorite pastime take time out to watch one of her special programs on TV. Enjoys dinner parties with friends. A happy lot was the Board of Education and Mr. Lynch the night of Dec. 5th, when the third attempt at voting school bonds for vitally needed new buildings passed bya thumping 69.6 per cent. The 5238,000 bond issue barely missed setting a school bond election vote record. It was the team work of the organizations, such as the Chamber ofCommerce, .TayCees, P.TA, etc., that contributed to the success of this election. Even a group of our own band members braved the zero weather to play atop a truck to call the people's attention to the fact that there was an election that day and that it was time to exercise the right of all free Americans. Our Board of Education gives freely of its valuable time from various professions, to improve the facilities of our schools, to select well-qualified teachers, and to make decisions on the problems presented by the increasing enrollment in our school system. LEONORE OSTROM MRS- -TUDITH LAR-SON Secretary to Mr. Lynch Secretary to Mr. Took ig: QJQQ We, the Senior Class of 1959, wish you, Mr. Took, a warm and sincere welcome and regret that our education under your direction has been limited to one year. Last fall your popularity was beginning to show and has grown by leaps and bounds throughout the year. Your pleasant but firm man- ner has won the respect of the entire student body. Your style of wit infused in off-the-cuff speeches has added spark to student life. May your years as principal of ROI-IS be many and successful. Sponsored by ARTZ. Those of us who eat in the lunch room daily realize the tremendous task of preparing food for such an eager mob of hungry kids. Our appreciation goes out to our cooks for their efforts in satisfying our appetites each day. BUS DRIVERS: Vernon Crandall, Louis Wilson, Harlan Ebert, Jr., Russell Bergstrom, Vernon Anderson. CUSTODIANS: Bernard Seaburg, Gean Bailey, Van M. Pike. This year the Student Council under the able direction of Mr. Tock, has grown stronger and taken greater responsibility, becom- ing the nucleus of student life. Student suggestions constitute the major ideas for our program. The council has undertaken various important projects for the improvement and betterment of the school and itself as a body. It is in charge of choosing programs for assemblies and religious convocations throughout the year. A plan for permanently locating the Victory Bell is under way. Such problems and projects as a school camival, congestion in the halls, and limiting student activities were dis- cussed. The council revised its constitution to improve efficiency and set up a code of ethics for students to follow. Men, We 've Landed! Upon our graduation, the importance and value of the help and guidance of our teachers begins to dawn upon us. We know that with their help we can look forward to a bright and better tomorrow and live up to the standards expected of us as its citizens and leaders. Under the able guidance of Richard Simpson, it annually receives high ratings. This fall the band put on many excellent performances at the half during football games. Although many people see the band members only at these games, they engage in countless other activities. For instance, preparation for the Winter Concert, band, solo, and ensemble contests, keeps the kids busy. h DIRECTOR Sande Hess Richard Simpson Joan Johnson Linda Strachan DRUM MAJOR Janice Almquist Jack Hansen Ann Mannasmith FLUTES BARITONE SAXOPHONE Carol Popp Janet Carlson Lyn Sawyer 7 Phyllis Nelson CORNETS Sandra Ekornsetter Susan Victor Barbara Mirts SAXOPHONES Bette Schreiber Sponsored by COAST TO COAST Pat Kennedy Pat Dunn Juneanne Johnson Karen Johnson Richard Kuester Alice Echard Donna Myers Kathleen Johnson Jim Lewis Lyda Clark Karen Nelson Beverly Swanson Jon Moore Ila Butler Karen Baker BASSOONS Juanita Mains Jack Hansen Marian Schenck CLARINETS Stephanie Williams Ann Artherholt Carole Loeltz Karen Pearson Jim Isaac Nedra Swanson Kenneth Wilson Carole Krumme Carroll Danbom Pat Theil E-FLAT CLARINET Charlene Munson Bev Swan Kathleen Moore Sharon Harms At the annual Military Ball, signifying the end of the marching season, Dale Wilson and Carole Loeltz were crowned King and Queen. The first big event for the singers was the Winter Concert. Selections by the Girls' Glee included, Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee , Pretense , and Oklahoma Besides singing other nimierous selections, the Chorus sang the traditional carols in the background as Lyle Edwards narrated the Christmas Story. Colored slides added interest to the setting. The event of the year, that was most looked forward to, was the annual Silver Swirl. The all-school Christmas formal dance included a well-planned floor show, beautiful decora- tions, and the music of the Howard Schwensen band. Shortly after Christmas vacation everyone began working hard to get ready for the contest in April. Other events on the schedule for the year included School Convocations, Pep Chapels, and the Shenandoah Music Festival which was cut short by a blizzard. Red Oak won five of their next seven startsg in the last seven conference games, managed only three wins but remained in the top division with a conference record of eight wins and six losses. In sectional action Red Oak defeated Griswold and Carson-Macedonia, before dropping to a red hot Villisca crew in the semifinal round. Individual honors went to Jim Isaacson, Ike , who for the second time was a unanimous choice for first team all-conference. His honors didn't stop hereg he was the leading scorer with 239 pointsg Lied the single game scoring record with 41 points against Corning. Terry Wright also shared individual honors, being chosen captain of the team and second team all-conference. One ROHS record was broken by allowing only 604 points to be scored against them. The old record was 606. Bob McClain received the only injury of the season -- a broken hand in the second Shenandoah game, but returned to play before the season ended. The reserves deserve lots of credit for aiding the Red Oak team. It was they who played in the county tournament and lost to Stanton in the semi-final round. A special note goes to the sophomores who composed a majority of the traveling squad. Credit to the managers, too -- Pat Murphy and Roger Johnson, for their contribution Jim Isaacson Conf. E. classes and two members at large represented the inter- scholastic athletics when their sport was out of season. Equal competition was highly stressed by this organization. Intramural, meaning within the walls , solely proposed that all students had an equal chance to participate on athletic teams, and events that were otherwise not included in the interscholastic athletics. Varsity athletes participated in the intramural program when their sport or sports were not in season. Activities scheduled this year for intramural competition were: Fall, Soccer and Volley- ball: Winter, Basketball, Free throw Contest, and Ping-Pong: Spring, Badminton and Softball. Awards in the form of medals were presented to each member of the winning teams in team competition and each individual in single and doubles competition. S s -LL- '-,-L - H J, .. - i sstf 5 After finishing fourth in the conference meet a year ago, Red Oak was expected to have a strong squad this year. This was based on the fact that underclassmen com - posed a great majority of the team, and last season 's freshmen-sophomore team was the conference meet winner. The Tigers were expected to be especially strong in the middle distances, with field events next in strength. These tracksters were prognosticated to be exceptional: Terry Wright, Leonard Kinser, Steve Simpson, Bob Smith, and John Breese. Wright, a year ago, set a new school record in the discus of 144' S . He also finished third in last year's decathlon. Kinser and Simpson were members of last year's mile relay team which also set a new school mark. Their time was 3:37. 9. Kinser finished first and Simpson seventh in the decathlon a year ago. Smith was a good half-miler last season and Breese excelled in the high jump.
