Q- K+4 exas ' 1-Lv. H.A. Wooden Sponsor f Qfagg tlovofagecqo It is only fitting and proper that I should tell you the future of this marvelous class of 1948. I, who am, shall I say the most intelligent member. You all know Joyce Pratt was--well I won't say lazy, but never the sort to worry the teachersabout getting in- formation. She just sat in class and never opened her mouth except to yawn. Now I see her after graduating from High School, still sitting. The only reason she got her diploma in that she was so absolutely quiet they for got who she was. They filled out her name on the diploma, and when she, with a great effort, walked up to get it,'mey were all surprised, she at getting 1t,am.the teachers at finding out who she was. Now she just sits on the front porch and her mother dusts her off twice a week. ' Adrian Rogers in resting on his laurels, the first- time he's rested on anything for a long time. He was editor of the year book in High School and.presldent of the student body. He is planning, as he rests, to become president of his class in college, president of the Nat- ional Bank, and finally president of the United States. Of all the members of our class there was no one who stayed home so often for no good reason or who came late so frequently as Edna Earle Smith. Every time there was an exam. she had the toothache. Every time she was in a clay she had an earache. By alternating teeth and ears and staying home every third day, she managed to get, out of most of her work. How she gct through is a mystery 5 The year after she gets out of High School she becomes, believe it or not, the school truant officer. Jerry Powell, while in school, took everything that wnsn't nailed downg honor, the best seat in the class, and most of the attention of the teachers. Now I see him looking very cross and important ---- the town dogcatcher. The Door pooches were the only thlngslbft for him to get out and get. A J.T. Biggs ls, I see, a mechanical genius. At the tender age of eight he took his mother's sewing machine and his father's watch apart. Of course, he d1dn't put them together again, but why be so fussy over trifles? He has kept up the interest in the inside of things all through his life. Let us look at the future. Here he is in very becoming blue overalls, working as a plumber's assistant. He uses a monkey wrench and loosens all the valves. Truly a wonderful class is this class of 1948. QOOIQOIQQQOOGQQGIOOOIOOOiiildlliillliiilliilfl ' Compliments of C. H. Head 6 Son Lancaster, Texas 'Some Stores Have A Slogan-We Have The Goods' 'i v F7 Qfassf-7 iSf0PYc The discovery of, the class of 1948 was an acci- dent. Four years ago, early one morning on the fourth of September, the faculty of Red Oak High School were strolling aimlessly through the hall, chatting about the just ended vacation and wondering whether there Would be any changes in their work during the coming year. Suddenly they caught a glimpse of something new and strange. Just inside the front door, huddled to- gether in mute embarrassment and anxiety, were the mem- bers of what became the class of l9U8. To the casual eye they seemed merely a group of ordinary boys and girls, reasonably goodlooklng and badly frightened But to the trained eye, these strangers seemed distinct and separated individuals, each possessing talents and capabilities worth finding out. The faculty bade them enter and spent the next few weeks attempting to gain their confidence. The most unpleasant thing about this Freshman year was the contempt in which they were held by those who had been residing in school for a longer period than they. ' At the end of the year a terrible disaster befell the Freshmen. Although it was instigated by their bene- volent faculty and intended to prove of lasting benefit to them, they suffered greatly. Many had their growth re- tarded a year by it and a few, pernanently disabled, left the Freshman class forever. This disaster was called F1nal,Exam1nat1on. With the coming of the next September, they recieved a new name. Because of their skill in acquiring the customs of the school, they were renamed Sonhomores and the process was called by a native name, upromotionn. Now, a strange thing happened. RSWSMOFFIDS the scorn With which they had been regarded the previous year, they adopted the same attitude toward the incoming strangers who took their places as Freshmen. The routine of the 'classroom was now familar and they found studying easier than before. The class organization of the Sophomore yenrfwas as fol- lows: Joyce Pratt, presidentg Adrian Rogers, vice-president and Edna Earle Smith, secretary. This was a distinguished body and reflected honor on the entire school. In the third year owing to an educational custom, the Sophomores became Juniors, and their sense of importance h- creased out of all due proportion. Great, indeed, was their scorn for the Freshman and Sophomores. New we come to the fourth, and greatest year in the history of the class. They automatically Cas was their cus- tom in many things! became Seniors in September. With the gaining of this title they began to take them selves more seriously than ever before. eWhen, I say, nserlouslyn, I This Page Sponsored By OLDHAM'S GROCERY Red Oak, Texas r ,, gg H---.mfg Y ,,i, mean, eer1oue1y'2 As the year drew to a oloee they were positively dizzy with dignity. Some of the faculty might Question that statement, but I know it is true. On the athletic field and on the stage many of our mem- bers have shown. In ,the class room ---- well ---- in the class room some of our members have shown. There Can be no doubt about our intelligence. As for charm and personality just look at us. There is no ques- tion that we have an abundant supply. We have all heard of ethe boy who wants what he wants when he wants it. We are privileged to have as one of our member a boy that does better than that. He gets what he wants when he wants it ---- and how. If he sees anything he likes ---- oh no, he doesn't take ltg but before he knows what's happened, the amer finds himself giving it to him. His skill ln getting others to do his work for him is unbelievable. I could name a classmate who did all his school assignments for himg but I won't. We know he will get everything he wants in this world. We do say, 'May everything he gets prove to be what he thought itvas when he wanted it. During this past year, our class has participated with marked success, in many social, athletic, and ed- ucational affairs and has emerged with financial as well as artistic games. There is a lot to be done in this world and we'l1 do it. Maybe we will turn out to be as good as we think we are. Here's to us. Despite me hard luck they had and the breaking in of new players the team has worked to- gether faithfully and improved much. 'When the great scorer comes to write against your nameg he writes not that you won or ,lost but .how you p1ayed'tm game.' This great quotation came close to the team of 191-I-8 in 1he Lancaster tournament. They won their first game, but lost out to the Crandall team in the semi-finals. Though they lost they were awarded a good sportsmanshipltrophy tbr being the best sports. The players that will receive letters are: Wanda Faye Chapman, oaptaing Betty Ruth Shaw, co-captaing Peggy Chapmang Wynona Jonteg Barbara Jean Hazardg and Peggy Bracken.
