'..-a- X The desire for education and the Search for knowledge are usually not the foremost concerns of the student when he enters high school. But, with the assistance and gentle prodding of parents and teachers he gradually accepts the fact that an education is a necessity. As the class of 1968 has matured, it has also grown more selective as to the type of knowledge which should be retained and in what manners this knowledge should be used. As we look for- ward to the time when we can turn our knowledge into wisdom, we prepare to use TODAY'S KNOWLEDGE for TOMORROWS FUTURE. a M3 L :MWm VLMSG ' if 'di , All N, M :q w ' 'Q if fl, F' N I if --4 1 lu' ki 15,2 Ki. it-f :uf 5 .ai M., ' ,.,,g. - A ,W 1-5 Q 1 2 A41 5 if 1 ..f 1 1 fill F V L ,'l.,, Administration and Faculty Seniors Special Events Sports Organizations Underclassmen Index LION 68 FACULTY l,oQ I ,,. v P ' 5 .ff 7' ' ' : 'f'1 . f W 1, ,. The So- cial Studies Department of Red Lion High School strives to awaken young minds, to improve them, and to insure our future. The knowledge gained by the commercial students to- day will equip the business world of tomorrow with eflicient, skillful workers. Generally the Commercial De- partment prepares the student to go directly from high school to a position in business. Among the commercial courses offered are typing, bookkeeping, shorthand, business English, transcription, and otlice practice. Provid- ing the practical knowledge that the students will need in their future positions, these courses are ideal for today's world. While the fine arts give the student a chance to express himself, driver education provides the opportunity for the student to increase his amount of freedom in our society. In the fine arts classes, the student is encouraged to formu- late his own ideas, designs, and arrangements. Perhaps this stimulation of the student's artistic ability will give him the urge to make a career of his particular art. Driver edu- cation produces safe, well-educated drivers for our high- ways. By utilizing the privilege to drive an automobile, the student finds that he is now more independent of other people than ever before. The growth seen in both 'of these areas each year proves that a knowledge of them is be- coming increasingly important to our society. Choosing the proper courses of study is a very important task in each student's life. A yearly personal conference with one of the guidance counselors eases this task. Infor- mation about colleges, trade schools, and occupations can also be obtained from the guidance department. Sound guidance fosters a secure future. Books are used as tools of knowledge to broaden and to enrich the student's life. Our school library contains a vari- ety of books ranging from scientific data to romantic sto- ries. Our well equipped library statisfies each student's spe- cific interest whether fiction, nonfiction, or reference. By storing todays knowledge, our lib1'ary constantly helps stu- dents to prepared for tomorrow's future. ffm W? ..r. I 23 No one subject taught today is more important than En- glish. Without this study of our native language, communi- cation would be next to impossible, and the possibility of our having such a highly developed, intellectual society would be quite improbable. We should, therefore, take this language study seriously, ranking it with the sciences and arts of which we think so highly. Through the study of World literature, American litera- ture and English literature, students gain a deeper under- standing of world culture and an insight into some of the world's greatest minds. Grammar study makes it possible for the student of the language to apply this knowledge to everyday communication. In our minds a better under- standing of the English language produces a better student and a more capable citizen. Knowledge of a foreign language is essential in this day when, thanks to scientific and industrial development, the world seems to have shmnk in size. In all our daily relations with peoples from other countries, it would be a great hindrance to have language as a barrier. Students at Red Lion are offered three languages, French, German, and Latin, in four-year programs. These programs are designed to instruct the students in the oral and written fundamentals of the language. In doing so, the students become acquainted with the living country. They also become more aware of the culture and customs of the people, and the land in which these people live comes geographically alive. Cafeteria and What else but delicious cafeteria lunches could have caused such broad grins on these usually somber senior boys? The cooks in our cafeteria, under the heading of Mrs. Smith, always prepare nourishing lunches for the students at Red Lion. Their menus vary, and they usually provide special meals for holidays. The cafeteria cooks serve three meals a day for the three different lunch shifts. They Work hard pre- paring good food which may be purchased by the students for forty cents. The Completion One of the busiest groups in the entire school is the LION Staff. The staff of the LION is divided into tive divisions: editorial, make-up, business, photography, and typing. All of the captions, paragraphs, and headings are written by those on the editorial staff. Planning the layout and cropping pictures are the tasks of the make-up staff. The business staff supervises all financial matters. All pic- tures for the yearbook are taken by members of the photog- raphy staff. The typing staff types all copy, just as the name suggests. With the cooperation ot the entire year- book staff, the yearbook is carefully fitted together. Rushing to meet deadlines, members of the LION staff can be found in the Activity Oflice during study halls, ac- tivity periods, and after school.
