LION 1 965 Red Lion Area Senior High School, Red Lion, Pennsylvania Published by the Senior Class UQ 'Q Foreword Since the beginning of time, men, whether they were barbarous or civilized, could not live together for any length of time without quarreling. Today, our world is pressed with strategic problems which even common sense cannot solve. Peace is a utopia which some human beings tried and still are trying to accomplish. Although tranquillity is an idealism, negotia- tions, which men have formed, have brought the universe closer to this one ideal. Through the knowledge gained from books, lectures and experiences we have learned to compromise towards harmony. Only through education can we attain this goal. Therefore, let us strive for peace through education. 21 Administration Underclassmen Sporm Organizations Seniors Special Events Patrons Index Table of Contents and Faculty 4-27 28-43 44-61 62-89 90-113 114-131 132-135 136-139 .Q Y 3 I mf E IE! new H W W--,IX 'Bk 'Wa .. ,,,,-,gfwqh. mx U S f . , A . As head of the school system Mn Gibb finds many duties beyond the walls of our own high school, be they educational or civic. To The Students Yours is a privilege, yours is a challenge, yours is a responsibility. You have been fortunate in that you have been privileged to live in a. country whose basic ideologies protect and encourage the rights and dignities of its individuals. You have been further blessed by being privileged to live in a community that upholds these traditions and is willing to give of its time, talent, and sub- stance in order to afford each individual the opportunity to strive for the greatest success of which he is capable. The provision of opportunities does not guarantee your success either as a citizen or in your chosen vocation. Each person must, in the final analysis, meet the challenge personally. What each person accomplishes depends on the measure of effort and dedica- tion he is willing to put forth. Having the opportunity to succeed is not enough. Each of you must work to bring these opportunities to fruition. With every privilege comes a responsibility. It will be your per- sonal responsibility to work and to live in such a manner that you will have done your part toward the perpetuation of these basic principals and ideals. To each of you, and particularly to the senior class, best wishes for continued success. Sincerely yours, 5 Raymond E. Gibb 6 Supervisors Overseeing the operations of the Red Lion Area School System, Mr. Raymond E. Gibb, our new supervising principal, exhausts many hours prepar- ing the functions of the school district to run smoothly. In previous years, Mr. Gibb fulfilled the position of assistant superintendent of the New Castle Area School District. Having been principal of the Red Lion Area Senior High School for the past six years, Mr. Thomas E. Zerbe has superintended the activities of the students and faculty. Among his daily tasks are scheduling classes and disciplining culprits. To Our Students You have all become old enough to look seriously to the position you will occupy in an adult world. That place will be influenced by conditions over which you have little control but which will have a serious effect on you. To some extent you may become the victim of the population explosion, a rapidly developing technol- ogy, the discovery of new forms of energy or the vast extension of knowledge. The rise of new nations and a rivalry of eonfiicting ideologies will, no doubt, affect you in your day. Our school exists only to help you prepare to meet these challenges. While basic skills will always be im- portant, they will not furnsh adequate background for the competition you will face. You will need a solid ability to think, to evaluate and to recognize trends or changes. You will need a broad base of in- terest, abilities and skills through which you can be- come a part of the most adaptable generation to people the earth. We encourage your curiosity and inquiry into the many kinds of disciplines our school program and the extra-curriculum offer, but in all your choosing be sure your quest is quality-centered, serious and academ- ically sound. You can build a rewarding future on nothing less. Sincerely yours, ...f Z? S Thomas E. Zerbe Mr. Thomas E. Zerbe, B.S., M.A .... High School Principal . . . Miller, administrative assistant, is found busy at his desk. Mr. lN'Iiller has many varied duties to perform in the course of normal days. In his spare time he enjoys building his classical library. Administrative assistant, Mr. Robert P. Tschop, is shown check- ing some of his records. Supplies, to meet the demands of the school, and transportation keep him busy. However, he finds time for reading, one of his favorite hobbies. Administrative Assistants Although taking care of the school records occupies much of Mr. Carl E. Teachers have many responsibilities, perhaps more than many people realize. Along with educating the student, they discipline and train him for the future. Many of them go out of their way merely to help a particular student with a problem. The memories that we take with us af- ter graduation, include not only the school and the ac- tivities but also the teachers. Miss Miller helps to lighten the many chores of both counselors and thus enables them to spend more time with the students. Cooks and Janitors Administration, faculty and students depend upon the cafe-- teria staff. They prepare a well-balanced, nutritive meal each day school is in session. Whether stormy or clear, our nine cooks come to the school to prepare the large quantities of food neces- sary to feed the hungry students. Not only do they prepare the food but also clean the entire cafeteria after the three lunch ses- sions. Likewise, our vigorous janitors clean the school. Among their daily chores are dusting classrooms, washing windows and lava- tories and repairing articles about the school. Therefore the efficiency of our school has a great deal to do with the cooks and janitors. One of the relaxing times in the school day is lunch time. Here a group of underclassmen await their dinners as thc lunch line slowly progresses. Cafeteria Staff includes: Mrs. Alma Smith, Mrs. Thelma Young, Mrs. Sara Grove, Mrs. Phyllis Keller. Freshmen The new group of Freshmen, straight from junior high school, soon make their arrival known with their pep, their enthusiasm and their school spirit. Of course the first objec- tive is to become acquainted with the new courses, the new surroundings and the new classmates. However, once they learn exactly how the school is operated, these students re- ally get down to work. Struggling to become a part of the school, these fellow classmates soon prove their many abilities by attending all sorts of sports events, by participating in all clubs open to them and by joining in a number of the activities which the school provides for them. Yes, the Freshmen have made a good start and are look- ing forward to the time when they will be upperclassmeng certainly the school wishes them the best of luck in what- ever they attempt to do. Having their freshman year behind them, these ex- perienced students plunge into organizations full of ideas. Besides supplying new ideas, they contribute to a number of projects, plan for interesting dances and accept responsibilities. Also, because they have the privilege to participate in varsity sports, some of the boys are quite active on the junior varsity teams. Likewise, some of the girls make up a part of the cheerleading and majorette squads. Not only do they share in extra-curricular activities but also help to Fill the honor roll list. It be- gins as the members of each class gather to work on their floats. The school begins to show the influence of the spirit as candidates for Homecoming Queen are chosen by ballot and as cheerleaders hang signs to further encourage the team, as the weekend approaches. work on the floats becomes more intense. Then comes the big night. Friday. with the football team, Homecoming Queen semi-finalists and the floats wending their way through the town's cheering people. In the square the band. cheerleaders. majorettcs. and fans await the assembled team. After addresses by Bfr. Zebrc. Mr. Gibbs, Mayor Fishel. Coach Fitzkee and his assistants. Nfr. Urey and Nfr. Shellenberger. comes the long awaited an- nouncement of the judges' decision - the winner of the float Contest. Queen Barbara Jackson was crowned before the game by the Senior class president. James Delhamer. Climax- ing the weekends activities was the Homecoming Dance over which the queen and her court presided. Our Homecoming Queen, pretty Barbara Jackson, takes time out long enough to pose for our Lion photographer. Barb was chosen our Homecoming Queen by popular vote of the students. Mighty Leo still reigns victorious! The senior float pictured here held a theme which met the anticipation of the students as Red Lion smashed the Rockets in the 'G-1' Homecoming Game. This float took first prize in the annual parade. Faculty Us Varsity The highlight of an evening of basketball at the Red Lion High School gym was a friendly game between the varsity team and the faculty. The faculty claimed they were the best on the pre- tense of their age and experiencefl But the varsity retaliated by saying that they were young and spry, and that they were still in shape from the basketball season that had just ended. The faculty was able to control the ball and the boards while the varsity was able to shoot more accurately. At times it looked as though the fac- ulty were going to win the game with no dith- culty, but the varsity team eouldn't be counted out because they fought from behind and closed the gap to a few points. The faculty had to hold off a last minute rally to win, 60-56. Proceeds from the game went toward a school athletic scholarship fund set up by the Red Lion Area Teachers' Association. We wonder to whose advantage this jump shot was. We surely hope it wasn't the faculty! Some of these responsibilities are for each individual to have his picture taken, to participate in selecting the class motto, colors and flower, and to be measured for a cap and gown. Navy blue and white were chosen as the class colors while the red rose is the class flower. This year Send Me No Flowers was the senior play, portrayed by two different casts. The senior student is coming to the end of his basic edu- cation. From high school he may continue his education by studying at a higher institute or by pursuing a job, but no matter what each one attempts, he will gain knowledge from what he accomplishes. .sq . lg. The story, centering around Mary Todd Lincoln began with her life as a young lady. Several years later, she visited a married sister in Illinois. Because she was attractive and well- educated, she had many admirers. From these suitors she chose Abraham Lincoln. The Todds, who were quite prominent socially, objected to this man. Despite her family's criticism, Mary married Abraham Lin- coln. Mr. Lincoln worked his way up in politics to the Presidency. For him to reach this position was Mary Todd's greatest ambition. As the First Lady, she worked along side her husband encouraging him to sign the Emancipation Proclamation. Depicting Mary Todd, Susan Fauth gives Richard Smeltzer, portraying Ninian Edwards, a look of contempt as he tries to convince her that she should not marry Abraham Lincoln. faniors Stage 'Love Is Eternal ' Beth Kmard a taxpayer, emphatically states her purpose as Carol expressions en their faces, Beth must have an urgent problem.
