Q W DEDICATIO N APPRECIATION OF THE FINE ATHLETIC RECORD RED LION HIGH SCHOOL HAS ACHIEVED DURING I-IIS TEN YEARS OF CA- PABLE COACHING, WE THE CLASS OF 1959, DEDICATE OIIR ANNUAL TO CHARLES R. NITCPIKEY, A GRAND SPORTSMAN AND AN INSPIRING FRIEND. Y iw J! FOREWORD THE AIM of 'QTHE 1939 LION has been to preserve for every student an enduring and complete record of the events occuring during his high school career. That in future years he may turn to these pages and through both pictures and words relive the experiences of his high school life. If we have succeeded in this, We feel that the task we have completed has been Worthwhile. , DIVISIONS ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES FEATURE LION STAFF HORT lived though it be, the term of those chosen to edit th: senior annual is well crowded with work. It is during these few months that pictures are taken, characterizations of seniors and faculty written and activity write- ups completed. Bids are considered, budgets are made, senior polls are con- ducted and the entire publication is checked and rechecked to detect the slightest errors. No amount ot time or effort was spared in performing these duties in order to produce the best book possible. It is our unbiased opinion that, con- sidering the financial limitations, this years Lion far surpasses any of those of former years. Edifoi'-in-chief. . . A.s1f0ciu1'e Edilmir. . . Aff Edifwr. . . GLADYS MAIKKS HE OBJECT of National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the pupils of Red Lion High School. The four main qualifications for membership are leadership, service, character and scholarship. Some of the criteria for judging the eligible students are initiative, execu- tive ability, influence, positions of trust held, and service to the organizations, for the school and for fellow students. Character is judged by onels dependability, industry, honesty and personality, To be an eligible candidate in scholarship one must rate scholastically in the upper third of the class. The pupils are rated by members of the faculty with whom they meet during their school career. Fifteen per cent of the senior class and five per cent of the junior class are chosen each year. Present members of the senior class who were elected during their junior year are Raymond Roth, Gladys Marks, Bruce Knisley, Virginia Frutiger, Geraldine Flinchbaugh, Ferne Anderson. Again it is realized that the Girl Reserves are at work. This year under the leadership of Miss Harriet Matter as advisor and Miss Katherine Jones as her assistant, the Girl Reserves have completed a very extensive program. The organization was officially opened on October 10 by a get acquainted meeting. Hallowe'en was observed by a party in the scout lodge followed by a covered dish supper in the home economics room. Blue ties and white shirts adorned the girls at the recog- nition service which was held at St. John's Reformed Church. Christmas to a Girl Reserve member would not be complete without a party and the folding of tuberculosis seals. The Valentine Party, sponsored by the Girl Reserves, to which all the students were invited also proved very successful. Yet with all these activities they included in their schedule an early morning breakfast, handicraft, folk dancing, teas, and last but not least their Girl Reserve yearbook which marked the ending of a perfect G.R. year. The club, sponsored by Raymond Barnhart, has made several innovations concerning its schedule. Stamp auctions. building of a club library and a visit to the Baltimore Philatelic Exhibit on April 29. are only a few of the changes introduced into the regular program. The society also conducted an exhibit of its own in conjunction with the science and art departments, at which the collections of both the members and patrons of the club were shown. For collections of merit, certificates were awarded. These few items besides the regular program which includes studies of various stamps, sending for new stamps and trading among themselves, composed the activities for the society for this term. HISTURY 0F HILLTUP LITERARY STAFF snows vnsr Pnnsnfssl Rises from l7lll'II1E3OfjflLIJlI.f?I1 Slncets i of '23 to Four Page I'r1'11fr'zl Form of '39 In the year 1937, Red Lion High School purchased a printing press, student operated, which proved to be a great aid in the publication of The Hilltop. This gave The Hilltop much distinction, for now it is one of seven who prints its own publication in Pennsylvania. When being rated in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Press Association The Hilltop was placed in a category with these other stu- dent printed publications. The result was that The Hilltop placed third. It was in that year also that the name of the school paper was changed to The Red Lion Hilltop. This achievement was brought about by a long series of events be- ginning in 1923. It was in this year that the students of our Alma Mater first conceived of The Hilltop. In its natal state The Hilltop was a monthly magazine published by a small staff. The reading matter was first mimeo- graphed but after several years the material was sent to Hanover to be printed. These magazines had each month a different colored paper cover, many having designs indicat- ing something peculiar to that par- ticular month. In the year 1926, the periodical was alternately a newspaper and a maga- zine. However, in 1927 it was defin- itely made a newspaper, and was published bi-monthly. After changing The Hilltop to a newspaper, all the material was sent to Hanover for printing. All the editions of The Hilltop from its beginning to this date, have been filed in the general office. These have proved valuable in securing records of bygone events and refer- ences to many of the alumni. Records are available of such interesting facts as those found in the issue pub- lished on the event of the dedication of the new school in 1927. This issue p1'esents the history of the Red Lion Schools in pictures. Other issues re- cord various activities and interest- ing facts concerning curricular ac- tivities of many of the Red Lion High School alumni. Thus far, there have been eleven editors-in-chief of The Hilltop, the first was Gertrude Manifold of 1924, the last, Raymond Roth of 1939. These officers are appointed annually by the advisors to the staff. The staf is chosen on the basis of the merit system. The advisors to the staff of The Hilltop have been since its origination, the supervisor of the English Department and Professor Becker, high school principal. Revenue for the publishing of The Hilltop was, and still is obtained from the sale of advertisements and subscriptions. The Hilltop is a very popular commodity among the stu- dents and townsfolk. Thus it was that the Red Lion Hilltop rose from an obscure mimeo- graphed group of papers to a news- paper which ranks high among those who are members of the various press associations. STAFF HULDS BANUUET AT WARNER'S DAI The S. S. Fun sailed out of only to later land its passengers, Hilltop Staff, at Warner's D store on April 13, for an evenin unique pleasure. In previous yea was the custom for the member the staff to attend the semi-an press conference, but with the pensation of the spring gather-ir banquet was held. This idea proved very gratif5 and after a splendid meal, a prog was presented with members of staff furnishing the talent. The tures included addresses by sei guest speakers and remarks by n bers of the faculty. Second Class Matter October 31, at the Post Oflice at Red Lion, l'a.. under the Act of March Ii, l?4TEt SINGLE t'lll'Y Ill VICXTS Hilltop Ranks High In Scholastic Assuciationsg Begins Reward System The category in which a periodical is placed in all the press associations is dependent upon the size of the school from which it is submitted. Thus it is that the Hilltop ranks with other schools of its size, an enroll- ment of three hundred and eighty, in all of the associations of which it is a member. These associations and its ranking in each are as follows: Columbia Press Association-second place, Na- tional Scholastic Press Association -ranking unknown, and Pennsyl- vania Scholastic Press Association- third place. The Hilltop has also re- cently been made a member of the Lehigh Press Association. In addition it is a subscriber to two monthly magazines namely, The Quill and Scroll and Schol- asticf' These periodicals contain articles both informative and inter- esting to those engaged in writing. A new system of advancement has been introduced into the ordinary program of the Hilltop Staff. This improvement includes the present- ing, to those members of the staff who have proved themselves worthy, a small reward. This award will be in the form of a small gold insignia, either a pin or an emblem. Only those deserving of these awards are cap- able of receiving them. A list of requirements has been p1'epared. The recipient must have during his two years of experience contributed at least two hundred col- umn inches of material averaging about ten inches per issue, his arti- cles must have been submitted within the limited time, hc must have been present, with certain exceptions, at all the scheduled meetings, his arti- cles must have been of calibre equal to that of a senior high school stu- dent and last but not least he must perform his duties in a cheerful manner. These awards will have a great deal of significance. since the merit system being employed for award- ting them, not every journalist will be capable of winning one. Being kept busy giving recitals, and when not singing publicly. exercising their vocal cords privately, these junior and senior high carolers made a grand showing for their Alma Mater throughout this term. Their public appearances include the vocal numbers offered during the combined band and glee club concert on january 27 and the musical selections sung before the York County School Directors Association on February 10. Intense practice under the direction of Prof. H. Richard Diehm, and valuable experience has made the Red Lion High School Girls' Chorus a blue ribbon winner. The sports chart of Red Lion High was again well filled. As a formal curtain rose, the pigskin parade marched across the stage leading a gala sports parade. Although it is comparatively young, football is gradually growing in the blood of our Alma Mater. For three consecutive years, the Gold and Black eleven have won the Tri-County Football Conference championship. This time, however, the third leg of the trophy gives the Gold and Black permanent possession of the cup, a token of honor in the football history of the Red Lion High School. Next came the customary basketball season, in which the new elimination system known as the Shaughnessy playoff was inaugurated. Being right in the thick of the battle, the Gold and Blackw finished in the first four. placing them in the first division. Although in the end we ix ere not on top in number of games won. it was by no means an indication that our moral success was not gratifying. lntra-mural sports. for those less gifted athletes, also play an important part in the extra-curricular activities of Red Lion High School, Noon-time and after school are filled with the scheduled games, in season, played by both the girls and boys. Mushball. volley- ball, basketball and paddle handball are some of the sports in the intra-mural schedule. FGDTBALL HE RED LION 'Lions' under the able coaching of Nitchkey, Baugher, and Barnhart, gained the victory entitling them to their third consecutive championship which meant the. permanent holding of the three year trophy. This year the Gold and Black gridmen out-scored their opponents 133-97. The Shillington and West York games proved to be the most decisive battles. In the most exciting play of the former, Kopp, receiving the ball from Stabley, made the only score in the last sixty seconds of play. During the West York game, Springer, intercepting a pass, starred for Red Lion by making a spectacular ninety-eight yard run which ended in a touchdown. The gridsters next season will suHer the loss of Springer, Taylor, Gipe, Morrison, Sheffer, Gouker, Grim, Stabley, Young, Hengle, and Ludwig, the senior members who helped bring victory this season. But due to the experience the juniors and sophomores received this year, Red Lion should be represented next year by a team equal to the one which carried the Gold and Black to victory in '38 ' SCHEDULE Red Lion Shippensburg Red Lion New Freedom Red Lion Columbia tkRed Lion Shillington ti1Red Lion Elizabethtown 2kRed Lion Lititz XRed Lion Ephrata Red Lion Middletown :l1Red Lion West York :l:Conference Games MEMBERS Fifi! row left to rigbl-MStabley, Springer, Morrison, Sheffer fCapt.j, J. Having made use of the Shaughnessy playfoff system, the Gold and Black was found in the first division of a ten game schedule, the highlight of which was a twelve point victory over the arch rival, Dallastown, on their home floor. Wlith eleven wins and live defeats, the '59 Lions'l gave the spectators many thrills, outstanding among which was the one point defeat by the green invaders from Catholic High. Other first division competition was offered by Spring Grove. Even though eliminated from the State P.I.A.A. playoff, the Red Lion cagers presented themselves a dithcult milestone to pass, amassing a total of 489 points, to the opponents' 580. As in football, the nucleus of the squad will be removed by graduation, but there is still much material available for next year's team. The varsity league consists of a class A division in which North York, Dallastown, New Freedom and Red Lion are entered and also a class B division which is composed of such schools as Manchester, Glen Rock, Glenville, Hellam and Dillsburg. The winner of class A plays the winner ot class B to determine the champion of the league. The additional team was added to train and develop players for the varsity of the tuture. Stewartstown, Delta, Lower Chanceford and Red Lion are the schools represented in the league. In the junior high school instead of having a varsity nine, an intra-mural league was substituted. It consisted of eight teams which were coached by members of the senior high varsity squad. The entire new program permitted many more boys to derive the benefits of the 'lnation's greatest pastime. A 61 L TRACK VEN though showers and flowers are a sign of spring, track meets are the harbingers of spring at Red Lion High. A good start is half the race. Never look back. Such remarks as these filled the corridors of our Alma Mater for the concluding two months of school. This year Mr. Raymond Barnhart acted as coach of the track team instead of Mr. Yoas who was the coach of former years. Being one of the sports of our school, the former track program was followed. Dual meets were held with several of the county schools. Outstanding, however, among the many competitive contests entered, is the annual track and field meet held in May at Red Lion. Events similar to those of other years constituted the program. These events were mile relay, half mile run, 100 yard dash and the jumpers and weight events. With the usual spring inclemency in weather, many of the practices occurred in the gymnasium. MEMBERS R. Barteaux, P. Eberly, C. Flinchbaugh, D. Gouker, R. Grinnell, R. Klinedinst, D. McCleary, E. The team, this year, was again in district three of the P.I.A.A. competition. Paced by Ropp, the senior captain, this year's spikers played all their games on the neutral floor of York's Y.M.C.A. Opposition was offered by some of the finest aggregations of southern Pennsylvania, such as North York, York High, Hanover, Lebanon, New Cumberland, and Lancaster. The elimination system was used in the tournament and Red Lion opened its season by defeating Hanover, but then was eliminated by York High. Lancaster won the championship but gave York High the privilege of representing district three in the playoff at Penn State College. Wfith the fifth year of volleyball coming next spring the outlook seems exceptionally favorable due largely to the expert tutoring of Galen Baugher. The Girls' Athletic Association odfers each year an RL letter to the girls who have attained the required number of points, namely: a first year letter, one hundred and fifty, the second year, three hundred and twenty-five and for the chenille or third year letter four hundred and seventy-live. These points may be earned by participating in the intra- mural sports such as mushball, paddle handball, basketball, volleyball and tenniquoit. Points can also be accumulated outside of the school by extra hours spent in camping, hiking, skating, dancing, bicycling, horseback riding, and swimming. Thanks to the supervision of the coach and sports directress, Miss Rachael Brinton, the G.A.A's this year have completed a very exciting and competitive sports year. G. A. A.
