In 1937, the old school was destroyed by fire, and the present central school was dedicated in the fall of 1939. Because of the tremendous increase in the student enrollment, an addition of seven rooms was made in 1953. The combined schools have produced fine graduates, some of whom have become members of the past and present faculty at Red Hook. Fifty years have now passed since that first class graduated, and, throughout this yearbook, you will find reference to this Golden Anniversary. CLASS COLORS: Purple and White CLASS FLOWER: Iris CLASS MOTTO: K 5. We, the class of 1956, dedicate to you, Miss Aiken, this yearbook in appreciation of your understanding and assistance which you have so willingly and faithfully given us through our high school years. , 'Y M. We, the class of 1956, dacate to you, Mr. Fisher, this yearbook in appreciation of your never-ending guidance dur- ing the past four years. To commemorate her fifty-one years of service to education, we have set aside this page for Miss Nellie E. Shook. Since her first job as assistant to the principal in the three-room Barrytown schoolhouse to her job most known to us, first grade teacher here at Red Hook Central School, about 1500 children have come under her guidance. We feel that because of this extraordinary achievement Miss Shook deserves this small remembrance in our yearbook. -, E-A I-I ,,-jqggg ?:'ry'gtfv 'aff :Z - iv 2+: 'i?'Qz '4 5 . ,mf 1,1 'g f' -' .Pj YQ F, , ,I , WI?T, I . ALMA MATER Alma Mater, Red Hook Central We are singing now to thee, May thy fair name dwell forever In our fondest memory. And when high school days are over, And we leave this school so dear, We will love thee yet, We'll ne'er forget 'I'he best school far or near. It is this fact which makes worthwhile the long hours of work which the seniors have expended on the production of the 1956 Hardscrabble. Congratulations to the editor and staff and the faculty advisors for a splen- did contribution to a long line of outstanding Harclscrabbles. The great English Bard, William Shakespeare, in his play, Hamlet, causes Polonius to give his son, Laertes, most valuable advice which closes with the lines: This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. This advice rings down through the years to you as seniors in this year of 1956 A.D. As you face your many varied activities of future years keep this advice of the Bard ever before you, to thine own self be true. XM' ' '-iw .ah 4' ,X i :- ra-1' - 1 ' .I .Y-'25j'e .f :+ 2557 :YN 7. Little did we know then of all the things that were to happen to us in the next four, short years. Mr. Fisher became our class advisor and Barb. B. , Jeanine H. , Verna C. and Jan H. joined us. Bill O. was elected president. Were we proud of Don Conn that yearl He made Varsity Basketball and Baseball! That was also the year Ann, Sandra, and Janis charmed snakes. On Moving-Up-Day we were awarded the field events trophy. Where, Oh, Where are the Verdant Freshmen? Safe now in the Sophomore Class. That year we became more important, or so we thought. Miss Aiken and Mr. Brenzel were our very patient and understanding homeroom teachers. Rose D, and Loretta H. came to R. H. C. S. Janis was chosen president. We held our first paper drive, which really helped our treasury. We also had our first round and square dance, The Big Wheel, which was more successful socially than financially. Our girls were the pride of the class when they won the inter-class basketball championship. Where, Oh, Where are the Gay Young Sophornores? Safe now in the Junior Class. N M .Assad We were gettin busier all the time! Lou W. and Paul H. joined our class. Phil was elected president. We took a class trip to Saratoga and our boys helped win the football championship that year. Glenn, Donnie, Bernie, and Joe M. made the All- Star team. Our drummer, Phil, went to All-State Band. That year the boys won the inter-class championship. Our first formal, The Marshmallow Bunny, provided us with a lot of work and fun. We had another paper drive and Janis and Woody went to the Syracuse U. Cit. Ed. Conference. We co-sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom with the class of 1955. Woody was elected Student Council president. Ron received the Varsity foul shooting award and Donnie received the Most Valuable Basketball Player award for the third time. We received our class rings and the Honor Society was tapped on that Moving-Up-Day. Some of our lucky girls were attendants to the Prom Queen. Ann and Glenn went to Girls' and Boys' State. Where, Oh, Where are the Jolly Juniors? Safe now in the Senior Class. 'I'his was our last year in dear ole R. H. C. S. and what a yearl l Rita and Margaret returned. Bernie was elected president. Our football team won the championship again and we finished the season undefeated! Glenn, Don, Joe M. , Joe J. , and Bernie made the All-Star team. There was play practice almost every night and then the big night: Time Out For Ginger' was a huge success. Allen Johnson went to All-State Band, The Snow Ball, with music by the La Falce Bros. was our last big event before our trip to Washington! Was that worth all the long, hard hours we had worked to raise the money! Another Junior-Senior Prom, but this time the King and Queen were our class- mates. It was June and those finals almost bogged us down, but - Baccalaureate was here before we knew it and finally, GRADUATION! I Where, Oh, Where are the Grand Old Seniors?
