FGREWORD For the past several years, it has been the custom of each succeeding 'Senior class to entitle its yearbook, Hardscrabble. It seems a more distinctive heading than Senior Salute or Sen- ior Symphonyf' However, there has been 'much contention among many of Hardscrablble's readers as to innuendoes behind this inscription. I assure you, there are none intended. In Smith's History of Dutchess County, we are told: What is now Upper Red Hook was known as Red Hook until General Van Ness, the postmaster, transferred his residence to 'Hardscrafbble' which has become Red Hook's post ofiicef' It is also interesting to note that the homestead of General Van Ness, Mainland, is the site upon which the school is now situated. Hardscrabble later was changed to Red Hook but no source -has -been found to establish the origin of the name. The fact re- mains, however, that our town was once known as Hardscrabble. I have heard many unconfirmed legends about the origin of the name, as for example, the old peddler who came through Hardscrabble 'but traveled on to Red Hook f now Upper Red Hookj lbecause, as he said, it was hard scrabblingv here. Other villagers can recall hearing their parents or grand- parents mention that they were going to 'Hardscra-bble. So, I hope 'I have somewhat cleared the clouds from the mys- tery of Hardscrabble. VVe think it is a good title for the year- book, one of historical note and interest and belonging traditionally only to Red Hook. How about you? PHYLLIS Cooxmoi-IAM.
