Smith Dedication There comes a time when words fail to express fully what is in the heart. This is such a time. Many of the members of the Class of 1953 who were privileged to have Mr. Richard C. Smith as class advisor in the eighth grade, will remember him for his true friendship and guidance. Not only that year, but all through our high school years his radiant smile and winning manner have been an inspiration to us all. Now in this, our Senior year at Red Creek Central School, we are even more grateful to him. A true teacher in the finest sense of the word, with intense interest in the student and an earnest desire to develop the best in training young people for bus- iness, Mr. Smith has been a special friend and guide to all. To you, Mr. Smith, we owe a great deal, and as expression of sin- cere appreciation, we dedicate this, our 1953 Centralite to you. ADMINISTRATION Board of Education STANDING: L. to R, Mr, Harry A. Ford, Mr. Wesley Van Graafeilancl, Mr, Paul O'Brien, SEATED: Mrs, Grace Frost, Mr,Jay Forbes Robinson, Jr,, Mr, John Cox, President ofthe Board of Education, and Mrs, Mildred Wolfe, fMr. Robert Downey absent when picture was'taken,j The governing body of our sci -1, 'e Board of Education, is composed of seven members. These members are 'e ted by the people of the Red Creek Central School District. Monthly meeting are held the second Tuesday of the month to discuss school problems and make plans for the future. The Board has as its goal a higher standard of education for the students of the Red Creek Central School District. With this fact in mind a new garage has been built, and the problem of relieving overcrowded conditions because of increased enrollment studied. As a part of their work last year the athletic field was enlarged. Due to the fact that the board members have children of their own in school, they more easily understand the problems of students and parents in the cause of making a better community and democracy by attaining higher education standards. Surely this worthy organization deserves much credit for its timely help and tireless efforts in making a school system of which we all can be proud. The President of the Board, Mr. John Cox, is a dairy farmer. Mr. Jay Forbes Robinson, Jr., Vice-President is employed as a salesman for Fay Lunkenheimerg Mr. Paul O'Brien is a member of the partnership of Putman - O'Brien businessg Mrs. Mildred Wolfe is a housewife, Mr. Wesley Van Graafeiland is affiliated with the Research Division at Eastman - Kodakg and Mr. Robert Downey is owner of Downey Coal and Oil Company. Garnett, who has been a teacher, guide and personal friend to the students of Red Creek Central School, Even though administrative problems oc- cupy much of her time, Miss Garnett always remains ready and willing to give help and advice to young people. When looking back at high school days after leaving its Alma Mater, to the Class of 53 there is one who will always be held in highest respect and admiration, To you, Miss Garnett, we extend our heartfelt thanks for being the guide who has directed our school days, i 1 X MR, RALPH DEMAS, VICE-PRINCIPAL Sharing the responsibilities of both ad- ministration and student guidance is our cap- able Vice Principal, Mr. Ralph DeMas. With wide eyes, trembling knees and great im- aginations this group of curious, inquisitive youngsters waited for admittance into the wonderland of kindergarten. As time went on they grew more accustomed to their new life, and the wheels of progress began to hum to the tune of readin', writin', and 'rithmetic. Then finally the time came for this group to mount the stairs leading to high school. The up-stairs which had always been a source of amazement and curiosity be- fore, was now taking on a light of bewilderment for them. The next few years were spent in getting into the swing of things, and con- sequently, those who had not known the fullest meaning of the word homework, basketball games, intramurals, and class activities soon learned. The Fresh- man and Sophomore years were profitable ones, but it wasn't until their Junior year that activities really got under way with the preparing of the annual Junior supper. Highlights of the Senior year were the smashing hit Cheaper By The Dozen, a record breaking magazine campaign and the presenting of a magnificent pro- duction -- the 1953 Centralite. With thoughts toward the future, plans are being made for the conclusion of high school days of the Class of '53. But this is not the end of their history. Indeed, it is just the beginning of the flight into the future. Different ambitions and professions will carry 53's mem- bers far from their Alma Mater, but without hesitation they say Those were the best years of our lives. BACK ROW: L, to R. P. In the first quarter of high school life they flew to and fro in the Freshman homeroom, guided in the runway by Mr. Warren Neeley. The Sophomore quarter was next in sight, and Mrs. Audrey Crayton and Miss Hildred Harper acted as flight superintendents, giving warning sig- nals to fogbound students in their time of distress. Now, on the Junior runway, they have propelled into maneuvers aimed toward the high dive onto the Senior landing field. With Miss Sybil Bishop as pilot the course is set and the fu- ture loop-the-loops are anticipated. JUNIOR OFFICERS BACK ROW: L. to R: Burton Phillips, vice-president, Stella Bailey, treasurer. Played before audiences on the screen as well as on the stage, it has always been a smashing hit. Here is the author's formula for an evening of entertainment. To a family of twelve children, add an ambitious father who wishes his children to make every advancement in life, and an understanding mother who tries to settle difficulties between her husband and children. Then flavor with romances, fads and experiences of teenagers. This all adds up to a delightful evening. Both the acting and technical work were jobs well done with praise going to all for their hard work and talent. Presented to a packed house, the combination of a great script, a fine cast, and our hardworking directors, the play could not help but be a success. Thanks are due to Mr. Anthony Zappella, who so willingly took over the re- sponsibility of directing after Mrs. Carlton Brown became ill, and to Mrs. Brown who guided our initial rehearsals. Guided by Mr. Anthony Zapella with Richard Sauer as Editor-in-chief, and Barbara Viele as Junior Editor, the Red Cricket staff has produced a paper entirely devoted to high school news. The paper, printed eleven times a year, has had timely ar- ticles, clever jokes and interesting information. For the first time, the Copy Cricket composed of news from the first six grades has made its appearance. The students with the assistance of Barbara Viele and Richard Lefavor, have written and produced a memiographed newspaper which is a step towards their future newspaper work. On wings of time, the Red Cricket and the Copy Cricket have been successful in their endeavors to keep school citizens well in- formed. BACK ROW L, to R, E, Parsons, D. Mull, O. Stewart, A. Forsythe. With the precise movement of the staff and our advisor, Miss Helena Growney, jewels have been added to the 1953 edition of the yearbook. Due to the increase in enrollment this year, and the new organi- zations which have been formed, it has been necessary to add four more pages to the yearbook, making a total of fifty-six pages. Taking a flight into the world of ideas, the Senior page has been introduced with the most timely information about the class of '53 Even as a clock could not produce time without the expert skill of the jeweler, neither would this yearbook be a success without our capable advisor. With sincere appreciation we say thank you, Miss Growney. With old veterans like Mclntyre, Wells, Talcott and Brown the Red Creek nine looked like a prosperous team, Working its way into the Tri County League and Class C Sectionals with 8 wins and 3 loses, the team brought another winning season to Red Creek Central. Kick That Goal Under the direction of Coach Warren Neely, the soccer team won its first game this year being victorious over North Rose. With plenty of spirit and good sportsmanship, the team gave all its opponents a tough battle.
