WITH DUE RESPECT MR. DOUGLAS R. SALE This wonderful year has come to a close, and to climax this year, we would like to dedicate this Dictum Est. to an alumni of Red Bluff Union High School, Mr . Douglas R Sale, Dean of Students. When first starting his teaching career at Red Bluff High School, Mr. Sale was pri- marily associated With the Physical Education department and coached football, bas- ketball, and baseball for several years . In closing, We wish to express our gratitude for the help and understanding he has given each of us as our Dean of Students . We sincerely hope his future will be filled with much happiness . 6

PRESIDENTIAL Memoms Memories infolded in four years of high school mark four of the most enlightening years in many student's lives. Students of Red Bluff High can see the many events of the year 1961-1962 pictured in the pages of the Dictum Est. But what has happened during the past year throughout the world while we were making welcome Noreen Limbuwala, foreign exchange stu- dent from Pakistan, crowning Alice Mitchell, Home- coming Queen, preparing for the Tri-Hi-Y Winter Formal and the Senior Ball? ON THE NATIONAL SCENE: President John F. Kennedy took office January 21, 1961' faced with a multitude of national and international crises. Unemployment was at an all time high, segregation was running abound, not to mention the intensity of nuclear tests. Our efforts to conquer outer space and keep abreast with the Soviet Union received a great deal of consideration. ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE: We knew the ever increasing tension developing in the world produced by such incidents as the Berlin Crisis, not to forget the problems in Africa, Laos, Cuba, and the break-up of the United Arab Republic. World wide concern was evident with the Soviet Union testing its nuclear warfare producing an increase in radiation and a menace to humanity. The death of Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary Gen- eral of the United Nations, brought sorrow into the hearts of many nations. ON THE STATE SCENE: Former Vice President Richard Nixon, announced his candi- dacy for Governor of California. The increase in population and the decrease in water reserves, produced a statewide fire hazard. The loss of 250 homes in Southern Califor- nia was the result of one fire. ON THE SPORTS SCENE: The New York Yankees won the 1961 World Series. Yankee baseball players, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris came close to breaking Babe Ruth's long standing official home run record. Two new major league baseball clubs were or- ganized, the Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Angels, the latter who signed Red B1uff's Marv Grissom, former major league pitcher, as a coach. ln addition, numerous professional football and basketball teams were organized. Summarizing these happenings throughout the world and our nation should present a clear picture of the critical problems facing us in the future and the pastime provided us as a free nation. We should be forever grateful to a faculty of dedicated teachers and administrative leaders, who have helped prepare us for the years ahead. 5
