Out of the television set and onto the stage of Red Bank Regional came the Gong Show, spon sored by the class of 1979 last October. This show was a popular one, and attracted many friends, families, and people looking for an eve- ning of entertainment. Entertained they were, with acts ranging from a live band to strictly com edy routines. Some of the award-winning acts were Sue Voss, singing her original “Lover of My Dreams,” and Susan Nixon, Lisa Cross, Renee Holder and Diana Ross dancing to a Pointer Sis- ters’ song. Undoubtedly the worst act of the show was King Hamakihaka and his gals, otherwise known as Pam Peseaux, Lisa Phipps, Karen Soleau and Cathy Walsh. Pulling all this frivolity together were the Masters of Ceremonies, Scott Wilson and Anthony Biancomano. Even the fac- ulty got into the action of the show as the four judges, Miss Uva Thompson, Miss Onnalee Gaze, Mr. John Hird, and Mr. Gerald Gance attired themselves suitably in keeping with the humor- ous side of the evening. A grand finale included a shaving cream attack on the four judges before presentation of the awards. But as early as 8:00, a group of dedicated seniors were already at work setting up the concession stand for busi- ness at yet another football game. Aside from cooking hot dogs and fixing coffee and hot choco- late, the candy stand had to be set up and pro- grams made ready for distribution. After the game, there was the job of cleaning up and stor- ing leftover food. Overseeing this activity was Shelly Wolfson, aided by Louis Marotta, in charge of the concession stand, Lederle Carroll responsi- ble for candy, and Anne Castleman, Director of Program Distribution. Spirits were not dampened by the wet football season however; the Senior Class grossed nearly $700 a game. This money went toward the senior prom, the yearbook, and other graduation expenses. Despite the early hours, the hard work, and the changeable weather, all involved with the concession stand found it to be an enjoyable and successful experi- ence. Directed by Mrs. Renee Maxwell, assisted by student director Lisa Healy, the cast and crews spent many hours in rehearsal preparing to give one of the best per formances the stage at Red Bank Regional has seen. Kathy Lee's moving portrayal of Alice was accented by other leads: Pam Mauer, as Chris, Alice’s best friend, Kathy Wells and Andrew Pas- chetto as Alice’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aberdeen, and Dave Blakelock and Colleen Donahue as Alice’s brother and sister, respectively. On January 4, the cast presented a special per formance for the Psychology classes, giving the classes a chance to observe an accurate, true-to life portrayal of the effects of drug use. This per- formance was followed by a drug abuse seminar directed by a representative from Neptune Youth and Family Service Center. These students designed two rooms, the Mummy Room and the Devil's Maze. Running through the better part of October, the Haunted House pro- vided an opportunity for students all over the area to meet people and contribute to the March of Dimes program through a one dollar admis- sion fee to the Haunted House. Pre sented at the Buck Smith’s restaurant in Keans- burg, the athletes were feted with a roast beef dinner followed by the presentation of varsity let ters by the coaches. Serving a group of 150 staff members, stu dents, and community residents, the Class of 1978 prepared a first rate meal Mr. Conrad Alprizio, class supervisor, commented that the breakfast grossed approximately $200. Though everyone in the school was looking especially ugly on Tuesday, February 28, the two representa- tives of the Senior class, Moira Quinn and Barbara Sanderson won the prize, collect- ing $30.64 for their class. Representing the other classes were Juniors Peggy Giglio and Benji Minton, Sophomores Karen Wright and Cliff Underwood, and Freshman Maria Denkms and Don Burdge. Make-up was pro- vided by the Drama department and the whole project was supervised by Mrs. Renee Maxwell, advisor of the class, and class officers, President Lisa Bruno, Vice- President Dave Blakelock, Secretary Jessica Letteney, Treasurer Debbie Phipps and Business Manager Rachel Simon. Coordi- nated by Karen Douglas and Barbara Fitzsim- mons, the show featured clothes donated by area merchants, which included Kinkel’s, Pant’s Place and Love Lane. Following the festivities was a dance, with music provided by “Frequency Unknown. At every practice, Coach Mr. Louis Vircillo yelled these words at his gridiron players. The answer, obvious to every Red Bank Regional football fan, was yes. The enthusiasm of the players, the experience of the coaches, and the roar of the crowd spurred the team to yet another victorious season. The football players were like a family, not wanting to let each other down. Tri-captains Peter Bennett, Kivm Brown, and Mark Lewis depended on other outstanding players for each game: seniors Jim Vickers, Keith Sturn, Robert Porter, Steve Nesci, Elvis Sander- son, John Ricci, Steve Wikoff, Mark Wilson, Mack Jones, and juniors Andy Charron, Chris Rose, Bob Grause, Tim Naiman, and Dan O’Hern. Practice was the key to the Buccaneers' suc- cess. Even before the season started, nine play- ers attended the Penn State Sports Camp to learn more about the fundamentals and techniques of football. By early September, the boys were prac- ticing every day, rain or shine. Aside from actual on field practice, the team learned plays, ran miles, and worked out on equipment; most important of all, they worked together. It is this togetherness and dedication that builds great teams, and the Bucs were one of the best. With a conference record of 6 wins and 0 losses, the Shore Conference C Division title was a cinch, but the Buccaneers were still not satisfied. At the traditional Thanksgiving game against rival Long Branch, Red Bank ran all over the field for an unexpected 14-0 shutout. After beating South Brunswick in the semi finals for the Central Jer- sey Group II title, the Bucs faced the toughest team of the season. The rivals were the South River Rams, and they ended Red Bank Region- al’s undefeated record. The losing score of the game, however, in no way reflected the excel- lence of the Buccaneers’ playing. The 1977 football team was more than just a group of athletes. It was a family of men dedi- cated to the sport and the spirit of Red Bank Regional. Not only did they win, but they won with pride. Coach Allen Morri son shouted directions from the sidelines as the boys passed and dribbled the ball toward the goal. John Marr, who won a trophy for dribbling at summer camp for soccer, was one of the three captains of this year’s team, along with Jon Marx and Dennis Daniels. Practicing every day, the team warmed up with calisthenics, and then practiced dribbling, heading, kicking, running and making goals. Many players from last year’s team returned, including seniors Bob Duffie, Jeff Jensen, Mark Tannenbaum, Jeff Siegler, Ron Melser, Bill Landis, juniors Nick Balenikas and Nick Hubbard, and sophomore standout Brooks Martin. From twenty-two can- didates, Coach Gerry Gance chose an excellent team of five seniors and two sophomores with four alternates. The team had four years’ experi- ence behind them. Senior left-hander Barbara Fitzsimmons and sophomore Lisa Brodfuhrer combined to form a dynamic doubles team, rounded out by second doubles players Sue Hal- verson and Pam Peseux. Rain or shine, they ran six to ten miles a day. Coach Woodrow Sullivan was dedicated, for he demon- strated leadership and provided direction. Eve Thompson, the first female member of the team, went on to make the All Shore Girls’ Cross-Coun try team. Her teammate Tom Schroll was ranked tenth in the Shore Conference Championship. Although the team did not run away with any victories this year, the members felt that it was still a successful season in spite of the losing record. Anyone who can run that much must be a winner! Coach Karen Cook was sorry that the boys had to work out on female equip- ment, but was pleased to have them on the team. James Jackson obviously found the equipment no hamper to his style, for he qualified for the Shore Conference Developmental Meet and won a medal for his fifth place in the vaulting event. The girls found working with the boys a definite advantage since they exhibited more strength in some of the gymnastic events. Because of the large size of the team, Mrs. Cook had to rely on Captain Robin Simmons, Co-Captain Rose Graves, and “old timers” Jeanne Zucker and Julie Ellegood to assist in spotting newcomers. Although the team had a losing record, the young team considered this a successful rebuilding year, with many basic skills and routines taught and reinforced. The Red Bank Regional basketball team once again advanced to a victorious season. Coach Mr. Warren Booth had a good reason to be optimistic at the start of the season, with many seasoned players returning, and a crop of new captains, assisted by the rest of the starting five, which included forward Dan O’Hern, guard Dwight Atkinson, and center Chris Rose. This year’s team was also aided by a strong bench, espe dally seniors Ray Livingston and Willie Crespo, Michael Dinkel, and sophomore talent Vincent Atkinson, the other half of the Atkinson brother duo. A slow start due to a long football season did not hamper the Buc’s style, as they went on to beat Rumson-Fair Haven in the finals of the Casey Festival to take first place in the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman contests for the first sweep ever. Juggie Womble won the Most Valuable Player award for the tournament, and was joined by junior Chris Rose in being chosen for the All-Star team of the Festival. On January 31, in a game against Pt. Pleasant, Juggie Worn ble scored his 1000th point for Red Bank Regional. Continuing with this trend, the Buc hoopsters went on winning to gain another sue cessful season for Red Bank Regional, losing for four games, making them eligible for Shore Con ference Playoff berth. Ray Kearney, David Tanen Ellen Sturmfels passes the baton to the next runner after completing her leg of the 880 relay It takes a special breed of athlete to compete in the Indoor Track program, as any member of the Red Bank Regional team could tell you. This year, the sport was geared toward an individual approach to track since there were not enough competitors to compete in all events in dual com petition. Those thirty who did participate, how- ever, worked. They never gave in to their tough est opponent — the stop watch. Red Bank's strength has traditionally been in the sprint events, although Coach Mr. Lou Vircillo encour- aged the development of mid-and long distance runners, with evidence of definite improvement in these events by the end of the season. Pitted against some of the toughest teams on the Shore, including CBA, Asbury Park, and Nep- tune, the runners strove to overcome their lack of numbers with an abundance of effort and sta- mina, and the events that they were able to com- pete in were usually won. This year's girls' team was sparked by a diver sity of runners. Marianne McGuire, Eve Thomp- son, Ellen Sturmfels, and Wanda Garrison all placed high in Shore Competition. A highlight of the year took place in a dual meet versus Nep- tune, an unusually strong girls' team. Six of our girls participated against thirty of Neptune’s by doubling and tripling in track events. Their dedi- cation paid off when they defeated Neptune and were recognized as one of the better girls’ teams on the shore. The loss of Kivin Brown, unable to finish the season because of a knee injury, apparently left the boys’ team with little hope, until sophomore Terry Niely began to run every event, and won second place in the Shore Conference Indoor Track Meet. Senior runners Mark Barrecca, Mark Wilson, Bob Duffie and Tom Schroll, and shot- putters Pete Bennett and Keith Sturn, were the mainstay of the team, anchored by junior hurdler Lawrence Johnson, sophomore talent John Sem- ple, and upcoming freshman stars Dave Clapp, and David Tane. At 6:00 in the morning, about thirty-five of Red Bank Regional’s heftiest students dragged them selves into the Red Bank YMCA locker room to change for another gruelling swim practice. Starting off with warm-up laps, the group moved into sprints, timed trials, and whistle swims, designed to increase both speed and endurance. Then, another quick change, and the swimmers caught a bus back to school, where they com- bined attendance and breakfast in the swimming homeroom in the cafeteria. Coach Mr. Richard Martin was proud of his team and with good reason. A season record of 7- 1 for the boys and 6-2 for the girls made them eli- gible for state competition. Team captains Ricky Rell, John Mueller, Dana Morton and Dana Mih Ion led the team, with a strong background from talented underclassmen Jim Reilly, Dane Mihlon, Marc Gutleber, Robert McHeffey, and girls Jenni- fer Meyer, Nancy MacCaonnel, Diana Kedrowski and Beth Kingsbury. The diving team also advanced to victory, with Cheryl Dobrowsky and William “Winky” McHeffey flipping their way through meets. During the daily practice sessions, the team also perfected new plays and maneuvers, and learned to work together as a team. A season record of 5 and 12 for the varsity team showed improvement of the new members of the team and gave Coach Fallon an optimistic outlook about the season. A cry broke out over the alley as the Red Bank Regional boys’ bowling team advanced towards another victory. With an inexperienced team, Mr. James Zucarro considered this year a rebuilding season. Averages of 172, 160, and 150 of Rodger Miller, Danny Weston, and Frank Adams respectively, carried the team to an over- all record of 17 10. Returning trackmen assisted new members of the team, and many indoor track members moved their winter of training indoors to outdoor track to compete in the spring. Peter Bennett and Keith Stum in the shot putt, Chris Rose with the discus, hurdler Larry Johnson, and runners Pat Mazzucca and Mark Wilson were the backbone of the team, while underclassmen filled out the squad. It was a hot and humid afternoon at Red Bank Regional and a group of girls was slowly but faith- fully dragging their bodies and equipment to soft- ball practice. With the sun beating down on them, the girls listened intently to Coach Chester Young give advice, help, and directions about softball. This year was only the second year of girls’ var- sity softball at Red Bank Regional, but Coach Young felt optimistic at the beginning of the sea- son for he knew his young team had potential. As they changed into sweat shirts, sweat pants, t-shirts and jeans. Coach Louis DeGeorge decided on the day's grueling practice. The boys reluctantly wondered what today's practice would consist of — infield prac- tice, batting practice or maybe even jogging? Senior third baseman Ted Soden and shortstop and pitcher John Wilson obviously had no remorse for practices and thus both returned for their third consecutive year on varsity baseball. Other outstanding seniors included outfielder Tim Aumack, outfielder and pitcher Joe Madure, first baseman Fred Mazzuca, third baseman and pitcher Mark Tanenbaum and second baseman and pitcher Mark Wilson. Decisions involve change and an acceptance of responsibility. This was what the Board of Educa tion and Administration hoped to bring about this year through in school suspension, homework contracts, and structured study halls During the previous school year and summer, Dr. Donald Warner consulted student, parent, and teacher advisory committees about changes in the point system and curriculum. Parents were encour aged to become involved with the school and try to establish better communications. Structured study halls and homework contracts encouraged students to be more responsible. Last year's senior class broke all records and graduated with high honors Therefore, this year Dr. Warner set no limitations on the senior class’s achievements. ‘The sky's the limit,” he said. Exams were reestablished this year to prepare the increasing number of college prep students for college exams. For students not planning to attend college, exams served as an overall meas ure of what they had learned and as an aid for teachers to evaluate material and teaching meth ods. This year, Red Bank Regional was evaluated by the Middle-States Evaluating Committee, a proc ess which takes place every ten years. Mr. Robert Tiedeman, head of the staff, supervised everything from cleaning and repairs inside the building to maintenance of our athletic fields. The secretaries also merit recognition for the tremendous amount of paperwork and other cler ical jobs they completed on a daily basis. One office that was never empty was the Nurse's Office. At least once every period, Mrs. Estelle Mond had to tend someone, not to men- tion the people who came after school for physi- cals. Despite the number of people she adminis- tered to during the day, Mrs. Charlotte Gersten was always right on top of any emergency. Working hard to serve a nutritious, well-bal- anced lunch every day was the cafeteria staff. Headed by Mrs. Elizabeth Pinto, these workers added a smile to every meal they offered. Senior Hilda Nieves waits to pay Mrs. Fredorko for a lunch during National School Lunch week, October 10-14. Switch board operator Mrs. Irene Orsini answers the phone as Miss Dorothy Lov ersidge takes a message. Photo left: Mrs. Vinzie Fontana prepares lasagna for hungry students on a special International Lunch Day. Students Choices in classes, courses of study, extracurri- cular activities, and plans for the future all assist students in learning to make decisions, a skill that is used repeatedly throughout life. 136 Seniors.............................138-165 Juniors.............................166-1 71 Sophomores..........................172-177 Freshmen............................178-183 137 Seniors Present Palmer Memorial Trophy Dorothy E. After choosing the theme of “Decisions,” the staff began the seemingly endless parade of gathering copy, typ- ing, filing photographs, and designing lay-outs. Advisor Mr. John Hird and Editor-in-Chief Debbie Wadsworth worked to make this one of the best yearbooks yet, assisted by Copy Editor Debbie Phipps, in charge of writing, Layout Editor Mar yanne Tsadilas, designing the Log, and Antti Paa- vola, chief photographer. Other members of the staff spent much time and effort preparing the book for publication and selling boosters to help meet expenses. An edition of the Log was sent to Columbia Scholastic Press Association to be judged competitively on a national scale. After the final deadline was met, the staff breathed a sigh of relief, and agreed that the past months had been a harrowing but rewarding learning experience for all. Finnish Foreign Exchange Student Antti Paavola covers the Pancake Breakfast for the final deadline which was mailed to Taylor Publishing Company on March 4. 1978. Stoots Bacon in the attic Log Enters Columbia Press Contest Individuals are shaped by the daily deci- sions they make. The Log attempts to reflect those decisions that students make in each area of high school living during the four years at Red Bank Regional High School. These determinations set the future course: whether to complete one’s education now and step into the working world or to continue one’s studies toward a distant goal. Whichever the choice, the students of Red Bank Regional High School know that the decision-making process learned during the high school years will help provide direction to meet one’s desired aspirations. For the skill of decision making, the students of Red Bank Regional High School recognize the dedication of the Board of Education, Administration, Faculty and Staff.
