Mundrane 4 This year we want to thank and applaud a fine teacher, a good friend, and a memorable personality. Mr. Richard Mundrane has a spe- cial charm that makes biology meaningful, logical, and especially enjoyable, even for those who do not like science. His natural good hu- mor and agreeable nature make him popular with teachers and students alike. As president of the Red Bank Teachers’ Association, he is involved in drawing up contracts and repre- senting the other teachers. In addition, he is a pilot in the Air Force Reserves, and in the past served as advisor to the Class of 1968 with Miss Sue Johnson. We cite his service to the school, to the teachers, and to the students be- cause of his personal attributes, creditable teaching, and outstanding personality. To put it simply: we like him. It is in recognition of your traits that we sincerely dedicate our yearbook to you. Thank you, Mr. Mundrane. CLASS OF 1970 Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind. We grow old only by deserting our ideals . . . You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear as young as your hope, as old as your despair. —Samuel I)liman i ADMINISTRATION BOARDS OF RED BANK Edmund J. HOOPS Superintendent of Schools PRINCIPAL MR. WILLARD BROWNING This year we welcome an old friend as our new principal: Mr. Willard Browning. Before coming to Red Bank, Mr. Browning taught science and English in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and chemistry and physics in Haddonfield, New Jersey. In 1945 he started teaching eighth and ninth grade general science in the Branch Avenue junior high. After serving two years in Korea and returning to teach chem- istry, Mr. Browning was appointed vice- principal in 1954, and has served in that capa- city under four different principals. In addition he was also in charge of curriculum since 1960 and was acting principal during 1966-1967. Mr. Browning, who describes himself as “easygoing ’ keeps in touch with and concerns himself with the student body. He firmly be- lieves that once a job is started it must be car- ried through to completion. He encourages student activities on the basis that we will “get more out of high school and become better citizens.” We welcome you, Mr. Browning, as our principal and our friend. 9 J.jl_ VICE-PRINCIPALS MR. Off to a disappointing start losing to Red Bank Catho- lic, the Bucs slowly picked up steam tying Matawan and then shutting out Asbury Park, Howell, Jackson, and Monmouth consecutively for their four wins. The high- light was the Jackson game (65-0) where Red Bank scored more points than any shore team this year. The offense, which averaged over thirteen points per game, was led by Pete Rock and Co-Captain Charles Taylor both scoring seven touchdowns apiece and running up 7.46 miles in total yardage. The Bucs also had fine defensive and offensive lines, although they never received the recognition they deserved. These lines consisted of such standouts as Mike Peterson, first team All Shore, and Bob Morse, Tom Galatro, Co- Captain Russel Schaffer and John Lee, all All-Shore hon- orable-mentions. % R.B. Led by co-cap- tains Red Grammer and Keith Vandervoort, the boosters consistently thrilled their fans with their exciting play. More talented than their record might show. Red Bank placed 3 men on the all-shore 3rd team: Bob Fiedler, goalie; Terry Crank, wing back; and James Jeter, full- back. Left to right, counterclockwise: Steve Maginn. Bob Fiedler, Tom Hannan, Mike So- viero, James Jeter, Jaan Laanisto, spectator Geritt Ewing, David Johnson. Not view- able: Bruce Cook, Red Grammer, Keith Vandervoort. Terry Crank, Victor Ortiz, Pete McHeffey, and Joe Cristofaro. 67 Inexperience and injuries played a major role in the Cross Country Team’s 2-12 rec- ord. Having no returning lettermen physically able to run, the Harriers relied on first year runners Steve Loving and Jeff Mikson and seniors Sam Robinson, Dale Cowles, George Falber and Gary Coyne for their few victories. 68 GIRLS’ 1NTRAMURALS Low .scoring Barbra Marx dribbles down field. Mary Nigro straight-arms her way to first base. For the first time in many years the basket- ball team won a post-season game—and then were upset by Long Branch. Posting a toughly fought 11-11 record, the Bucs were almost outstanding in their division, though, failing by only five points to capture the “B” Division Championship. The team was described by many as being one of the best all-around teams. The Bucs were led by Bob “Tiger” Lawrence with 17 points and rebounds a game. Jim Golson with 13 points per game, and Senior captain Fritz Roth, also averaging in double figures. Other Seniors were Bob Morse. Charles Taylor, who led the team in steals, Harry Evans, Chris Kelly, and Phil Rollins who led the team with a 65% shooting average. R.R. Sophomore John Lee, probably the shore’s top heavyweight, flaunted an 18-1-2 overall record including a first in the Wall Christmas Tournament. Only an upset loss in the districts marred his rec- ord. Senior co-captains Jim Tomaino and Gary Maggi were the grappler’s other two consistent winners. Jim posted a 12-6 rec- ord while Gary pinned his way to a 13-7 overall record. The wrestling should be better next year as seven of the twelve weight classes are filled by underclassmen. 75 Although comparatively few students realized it, Red Bank’s most successful team has been its track team. Loaded with talent, the track team won the “B” division championship with an undefeated record. Some outstanding senior performers were: Russell Schaffer in 440 yd. dash and high jump. Rich Schenk in the 60 yd. dash and hurdles, and John Hoffman in the javelin. All have been county champs. 76 77 78 79 80 Bruce Cook practicing with himself . . . again.
