' CUPOL o In Dedication . . . 6 Miss Andrea Manley This January Red Bank High School lost one of its finest teachers. During her career at Red Bank, Miss Andrea Manley proved to be a dedicated teacher, anxious for her students to develop into mature, independently-thinking individuals. Her high scholastic policies enabled her students to achieve proficiency in German and win numerous awards in state-wide competition. German was not Miss Manley's only interest. Classes were often supplemented by German dis- cussions on such topics as the war in Vietnam, in- flation, and politics. She organized small groups of students to see German drama In New York. Each year she invited German students who were new members of the National Honor Society to her home for a German dinner and entertainment. Miss Manley helped plan activities for the German Club, including the annual beach picnic where German culture was accented. Her former students will never forget her anecdotes about her ex- periences in Germany during World War II. While in this high school, Miss Manley devoted herself to her students and their full and practical education. It is in recognition of this devotion that we dedicate this yearbook to her. 7 ADMINISTRATION OR, ROBERT C HOOPS, Superintendent of Schools MR. There had been fimes when he hadn't been too sure he'd make it but there he was, a senior on the eve of graduation. As he reviewed the past four years at RBHS, certain memorable events came to his mind—the holocaust in the Harding Road building; the change of principals; the surge of school spirit during his junior year; and the un- mtigated joy he felt when he tasted his first school-baked soft pretzel. Along with these memories came fading images of some less momentous events—the Agnes Moorhead assembly; the 1968 political rally; and the sparsely attended Student Council tricycle races. In four years, he had witnessed quite a few changes in the ol' high school. The school day had been divided into ten periods (not counting mini-mods); mid-terms had been dropped; and the policy of exempting good students from taking finals had been instituted. His lunch hour had shrunk to a mere 24 minutes; but the cafeteria had started opening early so that he could thrill to a new culinary delight—school breakfast. As his thoughts turned from food, he fondly recalled the many pro- grams the Cultural Committee had arranged so that he might become more aesthetically aware. Several times, he and his school-mates had trekked through the streets of Red Bank to get to the Carlton, where they had become enlightened listening to Theodore Bikel or watching the Garden State Ballet. He tapped his foot as he contentedly hummed one of the myriad of melodies he had heard performed in the gym. Yes, the temporary platform there had certainly supported its share of oboe play- ers and percussion quartets. A note of doleful remembrance could be detected in his eyes as he reflected upon other programs—the memorial assemblies and services held after the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King and Senator Robert F. Kennedy had been assassinated. How distant these days of sadness seemed to be from the happy days he had spent working as a propman for his junior play, Stage Door! Yet, they were no more than a few months apart. Soon, a mischievous glimmer replaced the sadness in his eyes, as he reminisced about the Saturday afternoons he hod spent selling hotdogs at football games, about the Saturday evenings spent at twenty different school dances, and about the school nights he had spent rehearsing for South Pacific. Finally, he thought about the eighth-graders he had guided around the school one or two months ago. He smiled—with just the slightest touch of malice. ROBERT SPENCER I AMBASSADORS of GOODWILL and UNDERSTANDING In ihe summer of 1968, JOAN RANSON (opposite left) was our Exchange Student to India, Though her home was with a vegetarian Hindu family in Bangalore, she also visited the cities | of New Delhi, Bombay and, Madras. One of Joan's most memor- ; able experiences was meeting India's Prime Minister Indira Ghandi. But above all, she was most impressed by the extreme poverty of the people. In January, Red Bank welcomed its first Open Door Exchange Student EDITH De LOURDES CACERES PEREZ (bottom left and right). Edith, from Valdivia, Chile, stayed with the Kinkade family for ten weeks — her summer vacation. During her stay she most enjoyed shopping for clothes and taking candid photo- graphs of her friends. A highpoint of her visit was a trip to Washington, D.C. and Williamsburg, Va. with fellow Open Door s Students.. 136 THE VISITORS TO and FROM AFAR: left to right) JOAN, EDUARDO and EDITH. One of EDUARDO FIGUEROA'S most memorable experiences in the United States was seeing snow for the very first time. I was so excited 1 ran to the window and just stared at It. Eduardo, an exchange student from Quito, Ecua- dor, said that because his home is so near the Equator, spring is the only season throughout the year. While in America, Eduardo stayed with the Pidell family. Teenagers are the same in every place. There is very little difference between teens home and here. I feel we must know about everything and un- derstand all people. 4 That's a PYRAMID??? COED FOOTBALL GAME GO GET 'EM TIGERS I “5 9-13 11 - HIKE 138 The Manhattan Brass Quintet, a young group of professional, free-lance musicians interestingly showed, through performance and comment, the relationship of jazz to classical music. 'The World of Musical Theater , was a program presented by a troupe from the National Theater Com- pany. Through songs from Broadway musicals, this talented group traced the development of the musical theater in America, Jesse Stuart, world famous author of The Thread That Runs So True, informally related his childhood and career experiences to our student body. Mr. Stuart, one who knows America, knows youth, and loves them both, maintained that one's supreme goal should be to make one's life count. 139 JACKIE ROBINSON, first Negro player in the major leagues and Rookie of the Year , talked to the students about Human Relations In 1957, after leaving baseball, he joined the civil rights movement and raised funds for the NAACP and Dr. Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leader- ship Conference. He presently is Chairman of the Board of Freedom National Bank and the National Negro Republican Assembly, National Vice-Presi- dent of the National Association for the Advance- ment of Colored People, and the 1968 National Chairman of Brotherhood Week for the National Conference of Christians and Jews. 140 4 If smiles will do it, he'll win 111 J POLITICAL RALLY '68 4 THE CHALLENGERS THE CHALLENGED 141 Strong openings were characteristic of most of Red Bank High's sports season. Mr. Morris' strong defensive football team remained stolid against opposing lines and earned recogni- tion as the top defense in the Shore. Co- Captains Kevin Costello and Dick Michel paced their team to a third place finish for our first year in the B Division. The 1969 Cross Country team, in its first year with Mr. Young as coach, ran to a second record-breaking season. Senior Har- riers Bob Hamlin and Tim Betz placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the State Semi- Finals. The Red Bank Soccer team, in its second season with Mr. Mulrennan as coach, could be classified as the most upsetting team on the Shore. Led by Captain Joe Ferraina, the first Buc to make the All-Shore Team, the team's defeat of Howell Township created a four way tie for first place in the division. Red Bank's varsity Basketball squad boasted of being the only team to defeat league-lead- ing Ocean Township in conference play. Tri- Captains Phil Dotts, Bruce Farley, and Bob Pingitore combined their shooting and play- making abilities to twice break one hundred points and to end the season in third place. Mr. Blasucci's matmen earned the respect of all shore teams by attempting a comeback after a year's inactivity. Larry Lee, Dave Mott and Jim Clews placed second, third and fourth, respectively, in the District Semi-Finals. The greatest achievement of the season was John Lee's fifteen-second pin, which set a new school record. As a new edition to the RBHS sports cur- riculum, the Indoor Track team displayed an abundance of talent and drive. This novice team managed to place second in two of its three meets and seems to have assured itself of a place in Red Bonk High School. The 1968 Baseball team, although suffer- ing o disappointing season, provided fans with many exciting games, such as the defeat of arch-rivals Red Bank Catholic (22-6) and Long Branch (17-5). Lettermen Dave Fazzone, Kevin Costello, Bill Maguire, and Charles Taylor can be expected to propel their team to a high standing in B division in '69. Mr. Needle's Tennis team sported a disap- pointing season record, but untold in the won- lost percentage is the invaluable experience obtained by the squad. Captain Bob Raynor played well as number one man against older, more experienced opponents. This year's team looks forward to B division success with the return of Bob, doubles man Dom Mascolo and the team's most consistent player, Greg Lang- ley. Lack of practice hampered the members of the Golf team in their 1968 season. Captain Bob Pingitore, playing in the first position since sophomore year, looks forward to his best season in '69. The addition of Guy Lucian in the number two spot adds to the hopes of Mr. Hay's team of returning to the State Tournament and finishing higher than their fifth place in 1968, The hopes of the Track team rest with the performances of senior Bob Rudrow. Ranked as one of the best high jumpers in the state, Bob has continued to set shore records and to break them. Mr. Perry's team, consisting most- ly of sophomores, pulled many surprising up- sets, such as its defeat of Neptune, and looks ahead to a very promising spring season. 145 I AM A R0CK1 Pete Rock takes a lateral from Warren Josey and sweeps the right end for a substantial gain.
