Red Bank Catholic High School 10 Peter’s Place Red Bank, New Jersey 07701 Volume 38 Now and in time to be, Wherever green is worn, Are changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born. William Butler Yeats Red Bank Catholic in the year nineteen hundred eighty-two ... alive and growing in Christ. The spiritual, intellectual, and physical life, nurtured to fulfillment in each individual, has brought the Red Bank Catholic family to its maturity. Our self- awareness has promoted group effectiveness — the spirit and pride engendered by our teams; the gen- erosity and kindness extended to the less fortunate; the peace and consolation fostered by our visits to the elderly; — in Red Bank and its surrounding communities. Mary Eileen Kenney Denise Edelkraut 2 3 The Foundation of Our Faith Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. From the Breastplate of St. Patrick 4 5 Ahy happy, happy boughs! that cannot shed Your leavesy nor ever bid the spring adieu; And happy melodisty unwearied. For ever piping songs for ever new. John Keats 6 Everything that grows Holds in perfection hut a little moment. 11 13 Malihew Arnold 16 Hangin’ The activities of R.B.C. not only bring enjoyment to stu- dent life, but also foster the growth essential for progress. The happenings in and around R. B.C. are varied enough to en- compass every individual’s in- terests and needs. Through each students’ involvement, the entire R.B.C. community flourishes. 17 Executive Board Officers Under the direction of Miss Kelly, the Executive Board helped R.B.C. participate in many activities. These Student Council members clearly exemplified a high stan- dard of leadership and school spirit. The Executive Board was aided by a committee of capable students led by Chairperson Bridget Lang. President Beth Nelson, Vice- President Alicia Williams, Secretary Patti Byrnes, and Activities Chairperson Lucia Sollecito organized various projects for the R.B.C. student body. These projects in- cluded the Welcome Back dance, the Homecoming dance, the food drive, the toy raffle, and the blood drive. 18 The National Honor Society Red Bank Catholic has had its charter for the Marian Chapter of the National Honor Society for Secondary Schools since 1954. Students with superior academic ach- ievement were considered as candidates for member- ship. These candidates were reviewed by mem- bers of the faculty for evi- dence of substantial achievement in the areas of character, leadership, and service. Once ad- mitted to the National Honor Society, students were expected to uphold their level of accomplish- ments. Mrs. Bliss is the moderator. Front Row: D. Varady, M. Bertolami, A. La Rosa, A. Under the supervi- sion of R.B.C.’s new play director, Kim Blakely, leading players Lauren Miller and Bobby Burbic made the show an exciting one for all. Seniors Robby Paul and Patti Byrnes were among those actors who expertly supported the produc- tion. The play’s soap opera-like story also involves other capable students like Mike Stanton, Maria Gillen, and Irene Lockwood. The action takes place on the S.S. American during the 1930’s, and is highlighted by several musical and dancing numbers. The entire cast and crew should be congratulated for all the hard work and dedication they put into this year’s production. 39 The S.S. American Sails 40 Past Red Bank Catholic. Education does not commence with the alphabet; it begins with a mother's look, with a father's nod of approbation or a sign of reproof; with a sister's gentle pressure of the handy or a brother's noble act of forbearance; with hand- fuls of flowers in green dellsy on hills, and daisy meadows; with birds' nests admired, but not touched; with creeping ants, and almost imperceptable emments; with humming- bees and glass beehives; with pleasant walks in sandy lanes, and with thoughts directed in sweet tones and words to nature, to beauty, to acts of benevolencey to deeds of virtue, and to the source of all good — to God himself — Anonymous 46 Education is the knowledge of how to use the whole of oneself Many men use but one or two faculties out of the score with which they are endowed. Wise 69 luck is the re sidue of desire Mr. Nestinger New Athletic Director There have been many changes in the Athletic Department this year; the major change has been the arrival of Mr. Stephen Nestinger, the new Athletic Director. He has accepted his new position with a great deal of enthusiasm and creativity. Whether it be at a gymnastics meet as assistant coach, or at a football game, Mr. Nestinger contributes much time to his work. As a result, the Athletic Department is looking forward to much success under Mr. Nes- tinger’s guidance. In addition to his respon- sibilities as Athletic Director, he also teach- es in history. Mr. Rafter Father of Girls’ Cross-Country ... Mr. Jack Rafter, warmly known as “Uncle Jack,” is a quiet figure at RBC. He has, however, played a major role in our Athletic Department. On November 11, 1981, the Newark Star Ledger printed an article commemorating Mr. Rafter’s many accomplish- ments. On December 7, he was honored for his contributions to Girls’ Track and Cross-Coun- try by the New Jersey State In- terscholastic Athletic Associ- ation. Mr. Rafter founded the first Girls’ Track team in the state, here at RBC, in 1962. He is also responsible for the great development of Girls’ Cross- Country in the state. It is no surprise that Mr. Rafter has carried the name “the Father of Girls’ Cross-Country in New Jersey.” • • • The Swiftest Traveller is She That Goes Afoot. This soccer season was the fifth in R.B.C. history and each year our team has shown improvement over the last. This year the team, led by Coach Jim Marley and tri- captains, Mike Walsh, Paul Marhan, and Paul Rubino, continued this upward trend. They opened their season with a victory over Long Branch and then continued a long, vigorous season of three games a week for six consecutive weeks. At the end of the season their record stood at seven wins and eleven losses, which qualified them for the semi-finals in the Shore Conference Developmental Tournament. The team will lose eleven seniors this year, nine of whom were starters. However, goalie Tony Hernandez, juniors Ashley Wendell, Gerry Balletta, and sophomore Warren Towns will be among those devoted varsity play- ers and up and coming J.V. ’ers who will power next years new varsity team. Good Luck Caseys! This year’s high scorer was captain Mike Walsh, closely followed by Chuck Hendricks and Ashley Wendell. 79 RBC SCOREBOARD OPP 3 Long Branch 1 1 CBS 2 0 St. John’s 3 I Ocean 2 4 Red Bank 0 0 Monmouth Regional 3 2 Rumson-Fairhaven 1 1 Shore Regional 3 2 Long Branch 6 4 St. John’s 5 2 Ocean 3 2 Red Bank 0 4 Monmouth Regional 0 0 Henry Hudson 3 2 Rumson-Fairhaven 1 1 Shore Regional 4 2 Long Branch 0 1 Manasquan 3 Top Right: Tri-captain Paul Ru- Front Row: A. The team dis- played character, sportsmanship and class throughout the season. The Casseys’ final record (3-5-1) may not have seemed outstanding to outsiders, but to their fans they were still number one. They struggled to many narrow de- feats, but in the end the Caseys learned that winning is not every- thing. They may not have won any special awards, but everyone will agree that there has never been a football team at R.B.C. that has shown more maturity and, more importantly, pride in each other. Along with many dedicated seniors, the team was led by the third year varsity twins, the McNamaras. Mike McNamara was appointed to the All-County team this year and won the Vince Lombardi Award. Once again, much appreciation is extended to Head Coach Louis Montanaro and to his entire coaching staff for their hard work and dedication which were key factors in the development of the season. The hard work and long hours put in by the gymnasts and coach, Kim Canepa, showed in their season record of 11-0. This perfect record, however did not stop the team’s dedicated work. They continued on in their winning streak by winning the Shore Conference title, the Central Jersey Sectional title, and by placing in the top three teams in the State Championships. The success of the team was made possible only through the close teamwork of all the gymnasts and Miss Canepa. Losing only two teammates this year, the team is looking forward to much success in the future. Strong returning letter winners, Tara Healy, Jill Doran, and Beth Popolo, will be leading the team to a strong season next year. This year, one young man was not just another face in the crowd. Peter Schilling de- voted much time and hardwork into the sport of gymnastics this season. He was the only male competitor for Red Bank Catholic. He not only faced great obstacles, but he also began a new dimension in gymnastics at Red Bank Catholic. Front Row: Jill Doran, Chris Harasty, Robin Miesemer. Second Row: Tara Healy. After many hours of practicing and playing, the eleven members of the team joined to finish with an impressive 19-4 season. Even though the majority of the team was un- derclassmen, they all played like old pros. Leading the team was freshman Lynn Fagan. She had an astonishing first year and surely proved to be one of the finest players in the Shore. Lynn was named to the First Team All-Monmouth County. The other superior singles players were Junior Nancy O’Brien and sophomore Kim Cuozzo, who also showed the strength and expertise involved in a winning season. The only two seniors on the team vacated the position of first doubles, Deirdre McGann and Kate O’Hern. Junior Mary Hazinski and freshman Patty Ramos combined efforts to finish with a very impressive season. Miss Sullivan concluded her positions as teacher and coach this year. Her winning personality, not only as coach, but as a friend, will surely be missed. The Wrestling season lasts approximately four months and demands extreme dedication, physical and moral disci- pline, and the will to succeed. Each team member put forth his utmost in order to achieve hard earned victories. Although these winnings were indi- vidual efforts, the team was the sum of its parts. With the inspiration and aide of such steadfast teammates as Jim Miller, Mike Conte, Steve O’Connell, Mike Shevlin, and Brian Pheifer and the leadership and the encouragement of Head Coach Mautner and Assistant Coaches Barker and Wilbur, the Ca- sey Grapplers frequently tasted the sweetness of success. Even at those unfortunate times when the Grapplers felt the bitterness of defeat, they were consoled with the satisfaction that they had devoted su- preme effort to their match and had done the best that they were capable of, an accomplishment which in itself is a great victory. 94 Front Row: P. The enthusiasm and high spirits shown by captain Barbara Morris and leading scorers Tara Fodale and Diane Joy could make even practices almost enjoy- able. Much support and good advice was giv- en to the team by coach, Miss Lynn Dooley, and JV coach, Miss Mary King. The girls were led by seniors Barbara Mor- ris, Tara Fodale, Deirdre McGann, Debbie O’Neill, and junior Diane Joy. Next years season looks very hopeful for the girls due to the promising young talent shown in the un- derclassmen in this years JV season. Second year coach, Pat McGann, and the guys worked hard from the start of the season in March’s cold days through the blistering days that May can bring. All this hard work and dedication proved worthwhile with the development of a closely- knit, athletically talented team that made the 1981- 1982 baseball season successful and R.B.C. proud. 102 Jogging, Running, Racing 103 Right on The boy’s 1982 track team, led by head coach Jack Rafter, ran a successful season, as was expected. The individual talent held the team together. The two-mile relay team, ranked as one of the best in the East, ran for its last season. The members, all seniors, were Mike DeMonte, Mac Levins, Eamon Manning, and Pat Regan. Frank Baier, junior, was a plus for the Casey track team. Mike McNamara led the field events with his record breaking javelin throws. 105 Casey Girls Home The Red Bank Catholic girls’ softball team eagerly awaited their first game of the season. The girls looked forward to an improved sea- son based on their returning letter winners and talented newcomers. Much of the team’s success must be attributed to the coaches, Carol Bel- mont and Kim Canepa, for all the encouragement and hardwork that they have given the team. A great deal of spirit and determination has been exemplified by the girls — thus they have continued in the undying Casey tradition. Top: “Let's get our signals straight!” (The- resa Murray). We Freshmen have our own anxieties: making new friends, finding classes, and our class had one added worry- uniforms which tell all upperclassmen that we are a freshman and therefore ripe for initiation. Our Freshmen class came together and put away all fears and showed that we are an integral part of the Casey tradition. Led by President Nairi Checkowsky, Vice-President Sheila Glackin, and Activities Chairperson Jenee Niblack, under the supervision of Miss Karen McGaheran, the freshmen started the year with a very successful M M drive. Who can ever forget being deluged by an upperclassman with a severe M M attack? We had other activities during the year: a dance, hall decorating, and many others that were successful. Freshmen sports did very well throughout the year and all were supported by many enthusiastic fans. R.B.C. can look forward to many winning teams in the future. Our class of 1985 has gotten off to a good start and has shown all that we will surely succeed in years to come. 115 Front Row: A. Anderson, D. Adamitis, L. Arboleda. Second Row: S. Argast, E. Our jouney has been a rough one, but we sopho- mores have lasted the climb, and because of it, we have grown to be more competant and more understanding, in the tradition of Red Bank Catholic. We Sophomores live in an energetic and exciting world, where we make every effort to stamp out our own path. With the guidance of Mr. Soviero. and the leader- ship of class officers Kerry Capell, Kelly Guariglia, and Rachel Danish, we hope, in our remaining two years, to make the halls of R.B.C. ring with our enthusiasm. As Freshmen, we learned the importance of unity and independance. This was a period of adjustment, and our spirit of togetherness helped us to adapt readily. As Sophomores, we realized the importance of aca- demics, and what they mean to our future. When the going got tough, we got going. This was the year that we proved that we are the light of R.B.C., and in time we will outshine all the rest. 127 10A Front Row: K. Healey, E. Hase- man, T. Hcaly,M. Hendricks. Back Row: B. Hannon, J. But some- how we made it through that first tough year, and we became part of the R.B.C. crowd. Now we were being told that R. B.C. was whatever we made of it, so we soon realized the importance of participation in sports and clubs not only for the school as a whole, but also for ourselves. Then it finally happened, it hardly seemed we could have made it through two years, but we were now up- perclassmen. Along with that title came a lot of maturi- ty, and of course responsibilities. Grades became more important than ever, and most of the week was devoted to studying. But it could never be said that the Class of ’83 forgot how to have fun! We began to look forward to Homecoming, the Ring Ceremony, the Junior Buffet, and most of all, the Junior Prom. Then the words “Red Bank Catholic” were not so vague anymore; they began to reflect our hopes and dreams, our spirit as a class, and most importantly, our individuality. 139 11A Front Row: J. We, the class of 1982, are aware of Mr. Goss’ influ- ence upon our lives. Therefore, we would like to ex- tend our graditude and appreciation to Mr. Robert Goss for his endless dedication. Always there to lend a helping hand and to listen to us when a problem arose, he served as an example to all of us. Mr. Goss’ encouragement and enthusiasm were contagious and soon we found ourselves accomplishing things that were previously mere dreams. Through good and bad times, we found ourselves united more closely with the aid of Mr. Goss. For all the time and for so much more that Mr. Goss has so willingly given to us,we thank him. He has made our final years at R.B.C. the most memorable! 154 STUDENT COUNCIL From Left: Maureen Giles (V.P.), Jean Brady (Pres.), Kathy Kane (Activities). Front Row: R. Bond, M. Rodden, K. Hand in hand we'd choose the moments that would last. The lovely moments that would have No future and no past. The summer from the top of a swing, The comfort in the sound of a lullaby, The innocence of leaves in the spring, But most of all the moment When love first touched me. Oh, the happy day Would never learn to fly Until the hands of time Would choose to wave Goodbye. from Brian's Song We love you, Tommy and Chris. Tomorrow is a dream that leads me onward ... tomorrow is a path Tve yet to choose, it's a chance Tve yet to take, a friend Tve yet to make, if s all the talent I have yet to use. Tomorrow is a dream that leads me onward, always a step ahead of me ... ifs the joy Tve yet to know, the love Tve yet to show, for ifs the person I have yet to be. — by Karen Ravn 192 SENIOR DIRECTORY Jean Abbatiello i76 Stone Hill Rd., Colt's Neck July 27 John Abel 13 Melody Ln., Middletown July 27 Fran Alexander 24 Tabor St.. We have perceived a maturity in the Red Bank Catholic community that is only visible to those who seek it; it has been our quest to capture this in one viable and lasting impression, the yearbook. Our “Yearbook Experiences” have yielded memories upon which we will always reflect with a deep sense of happiness and satisfaction. The many new friendships which developed during those late evenings in Room 304 are ones that may never be severed for they demonstrate the common bond that has unified us. Miss Mary Ann Arcieri, our new advisor, has smiled, laughed, and cried with us, and it is her friendship and love that has aided us in the realization of our long term goal. To Miss Nancy Castner, our publisher’s representative, and to Mrs. Dorothy Senerchia we extend a very special thanks for assisting us to express the group effectiveness that Red Bank Catholic has displayed in the community. Finally, it has been our earnest hope that the seniors will observe within these pages the personalities and emotions that have comprised Red Bank Catholic’s class of 1982 and that they, on June 5, “rejoice in their fullness and part with their fruits with joy.” Mary Eileen Kenney Denise Edelkraut . rv—v1 £JL_ '
