t RED BANK CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Red Bank, New Jersey 07701 INTRODUCTION.....................1 SENIORS.........................12 UNDERCLASSMEN...................52 SPORTS..........................90 ACTIVITIES.....................128 CURRICULUM.....................166 CLOSING........................194 INDEX..........................195 Red Bank Catholic High School is much more than a building full of students and faculty. It is a community of car- ing people who interact daily in pursuit of their dreams and goals. The four years spent at Red Bank Catholic are years of growth — intellectually, phys- ically, and spiritually which pre- pare us for the future, and instill in us the hopes and dreams we will carry wherever we go. Everybody has a dream, And this is my dream ... that the memories made within these four walls of R.B.C. never be lost or forgotten. Kathleen Guinee Debra Edelkraut 3 The faith of the Red Bank Catholic com- munity lies deep within the hearts of each individual. It is exemplified by them in a rare form of togetherness in many activi- ties in school and out of school. The students, faculty, and administra- tion attended Mass for the opening of school and for Christmas. The teams prayed before their tournaments. The Jun- iors received their rings in Church. The Seniors graduated at Mass. When some- one in the community needed prayers, the entire school prayed together. This faith and togetherness keep the Red Bank Catholic community alive and strong in all its endeavors and show any passers-by the importance of our faith in the fuctioning of our school. 4 5 7 8 Casey Dreams ... 9 Wm mm mm fM§ fMm, mmfflm Do you remember that with Freshman year came: — Polyester pants and green, green, green!? — Hanging out in front of homerooms 1 and 2? — Pat-Pro with Mr. DeSimone? — Everyone double-taking — 8 sets of twins!? — The fire in lunch? — History 1 with Mr. Hintleman, Ahh, looks like rain. ? — Stacy Rubin's party — the trampoline? — Topping the school in fund-raiser sales? — Best friends running against each other for class president? — Running from class to class to escape initiations? — The fiftieth class to enter RBC? — Everybody has a dream ... Under the expert guidance of Mr. Robert Goss, the Juniors found themselves in good hands. Assisting Mr. Goss in leading the Juniors through another memorable year were Mary Eileen Kenny, President, Beth Nelson, Vice-Presi- dent, and Karen Cuneo, Activities Chairperson. The year started off with one of the most successful buffets ever organized by the Junior Class. Using the theme of Shogun, the Juniors were able to bring a taste of the Orient to RBC. In November, the long awaited ring ceremony finally arrived and each student was presented with the traditional school ring. After the blessing of the rings, it was time for everyone to de- cide who would make that special eighty-second turn. As the year progressed, the organizing power of the Junior Class once again became evident in the planning of their class trip. The night ski trip to Vernon Valley proved an exciting one for all. Finally, the year was ended on another memorable note with the Junior prom held at the Shore Casino. It was a special even- ing for all because it was the last time the class would come together as Juniors. The next time they would enter the school, it would be as the graduating class of '82. Christopher Walter Penny was a person of true spirit. Wheth- er in school, at home, or with his friends, he had a smile that could make others smile and forget their problems. He didn't really try to live up to anyone else's expectations — he was himself. We'll all miss Chris, but somehow his spirit lives on in all of us. 55 They've got to be kidding. (M. Montano) Michael Stanton '82 11 A First Row: J. Abbatiello, G. Benedetto, B. Ballehr, M. Brandon. Second Row: C. Berth, L. Boss, S. Alexander, C. Boylan. Third Row: M. Boyle, I. Brasson, L. All the newness of being Freshmen is gone, yet there is none of the power of being an upper- classman. The Sophomores are right in the middle, but their achievements have made them first in the school. Sophomores have gotten into every aspect of RBC and have been a great contributing factor in its success. Backing the class totally were the Student Council Representatives, with Maria Bertolami as President, Mary Lou Alter as Vice- President, and Linda Mellone as Activities Chairperson, and guiding them was Mr. So- viero as the Sophomore Class-Level Advisor. They all worked very hard to make the Morp Dance and all fund-raisers, such as the sale of Casey hands, a success. Other Sophomore success stories are found in the Drama Department. Both the Spring and Winter plays owe part of their success to the devoted Sophomores who acted in front of, and worked behind the scenes. Another great achievement is the contribution by the sophomores to the food drive. One homeroom brought in over 80 items of food! Athletically the JV teams in both football and basketball have done ex- tremely well. Finally, the Sophomores have even con- tributed scholastically — one Sophomore made the Na- tional Honor Society. As the song goes, we do have the silly, silly Sopho- mores on our side, and RBC is a better place because of it. 67 You wouldn't dare! 10 A First Row: M. Alter, J. Amorelli, L. Bivona, T. Brennan. De Angelis) 78 FRESHMEN Caught with their mouths open again! Being a freshmen was not a simple task; it marked a new beginning for each and every Ninth grade student. The worries of new classes and friends were only part of the class of '84'$ exper- iences. President Paula Vinci, Vice President Kerry Capell, and Activities Chairper- son Bridget Hannon directed the fresh- man class with enthusiasm under the guidance of Miss Carol Kulawiec. The ability of the freshmen to meet the challenges set before them this year was shown in various ways. The success of the freshmen athletic teams was the result of the never ending support of their fellow classmates. Their over- whelming involvement in other school projects such as the Thanksgiving Food Drive and the Almost Anything Goes assembly revealed the undying spirit of the freshman class. From selling bal- loons at the St. John Vianney game to helping out with the Casey Hand sale they showed their support and became a very important part of R.B.C. Ves, being a freshman was a difficult task, but the year was successfully com- pleted and the skepticism felt in the be- ginning blossomed into confidence and achievement at the end. Red Bank Catholic has opened the doors for other Parochial schools to participate in all NJSIIA contests, and have the oppor- tunity to compete for various coveted athletic titles in the Shore. In the pages that follow, RBC's athletic excellence, loyalty, and dedication are made evident by the outcome of the various teams' efforts, and their impressive records. 93 The Perfect Eleven This year's girls' tennis team went one step further than just being the perfect ten. The eleven members blended pow- er and finesse, speed and accuracy, but most of all the tre- mendous RBC spirit and determination. They entered the Shore Conference losing only to Rumson in B North play. It was on to the state sectionals where the girls scored impressive wins over Manasquan and North Brunswick, and brought home the CJ Group III title. Over-all, the girls had a 22-5 season record and ranked third in the shore area. Leading this year's team was senior captain Donna Horo- hoe, with a 21-6 record, who was named a member of the First Team All Shore. A pair of super sophomores, Nancy O'Brien and Mary Hazinski played strong second and third singles respectively. The top doubles team of senior Paula Calhoun and junior Deidre McGann had a tremendous sea- son dropping only two matches. Senior Robin Stesner and Junior Kate O'Hern pulled the team out of a few cliff-hangers during state competition. Seniors Stacy Rubin and Sally Mor- ris teamed up for the last time proving the success of their efforts over the years. Finally junior Ivette Ramos and fresh- man Kim Cuzzo provided a touch of old and new tennis play. A special congratulations goes to Coach Sullivan who pro- vided the girls with continuous confidence and encourage- ment. Miss Sullivan, your girls say, Thanks to the greatest coach. Front: D. Harriers Know How to Run As in the past, this year's Harriers were again a successful RBC Cross Country Team. Led by Tri-Captains Pat Connol- ly, Tom Gilbride, and Don Wilcox (All-Shore Honorable Mention), the team finished with a thirteen and three re- cord. A key contributor to this year's team was Junior Ea- mon Manning, who received All-Shore and All-County Honors. Junior Chuck Picullo remained a constant threat while Frank Baier lead the sophomore cause. The Harriers of 80-81 were not only gifted runners, but also fine academic students as illustrated by Seniors Pat Connolly and John McConnell who were two of the three Merit Scholars from RBC. The team capped off a fine season by placing first in the Shore Coaches Invitational, second in the County Meet, third in the Shore Conference, and placed fourth in the State Conference out of twenty-eight teams. Coached by Jack Rafter, and made up primarily of experienced run- ners, next year's team should be as good as ever. Mike DeMonte, heads for the finish line. Cool, calm, and collected (Tom Gilbride). Although the team suffered a disappointing 3 point loss to St. John Vianney, it soon became evident that the tremen- dous Casey drive could not be stopped. The team ran an outstanding season with the help of Seniors Kathy Kirgin, Sue Meeker, Lauren McConnell, and Linda Brandon. The 1980 season marked the comeback of taunted Maura Taylor, who after a serious injury, returned to active competi- tion. Red Bank Catholic will most assuredly miss this graduat- ing senior. The arrival of Mr. Mark Bradley as coach was a strong factor in the success of the 1980 season. Although his wit did not inspire the team, his running experience and realm of run- ning facts helped the team attain a 9-3 record. Surely 1980 was a year of disappointments as well as victo- ries, but most encouraging of all is its undeniable talent of freshmen Kerry O'Neil, Jenny Eckstein and Kathy Guarligria, who will return to the hills next year for another promising season. 99 Freshman Kerry O'Neil sprints to the finish line with ease, helping the Caseys to yet another victory. Kathy Kirgin, a departing senior, leaves the opponent trailing behind on one of the many hills of Holmdel Park. The girls always seem to take time from their training to pose for the camera. 100 Another rising star, freshman Jenny Eckstein, shows the form which proved to be a great asset to the team. Six times the Casey football team held their oppo- nent scoreless. This record entitled the team the Co-B North Division Title and admittance into the State Playoffs. In the first round the Caseys upset undefeated and first-seeded Holy Spirit, but later fell to St. John Vianney in the finals. Jim McHeffey, fullback and linebacker for the Casey cause was voted to the All-Shore first team. The team owes much of their success to the unending efforts of their coaching staff lead by Head Coach Louis Montanaro. The 1980 Red Bank Catholic Gymnastics team was one of the youngest, yet most successful teams to date. The hours of hard work and dedication on the part of the gymnasts and head coach Mrs. Kathy Kelly paid off with their victorious season of 13- 0. This perfect record was in no way the end of the team's efforts. Fighting until the end, the gymnasts won the Shore Confer- ence title, the Central Jersey Sectional ti- tle, and finally the State Championship. The success of the 1980 season could have been made possible only by the com- bination of the talents of all the gymnasts. Outstanding performances were shown by freshman Tara Healy, who was named to the Shore Conference Gymnas- tics Team, Beth Popolo, and Junior Cap- tains Kathy Crotty and Chris Harasty. The gymnasts certainly marked an im- pressive first year for the Caseys in the Shore Conference. Since they make up a young team, they show much promise of gymnastic success for Red Bank Catholic in the near future. And Then There Was Soccer This year's Varsity Soccer Team completed a record of 7-10 under the leadership of Coach Marley and first year Coach Casey. Led by captains Steve Ferraro and Matt Wise, the team ended the season on a high note by winning five out of their last six games over noteworthy teams such as Monmouth Regional and Shore Regional. Injuries played a major part of the team as Chuck Hendricks was lost for the season due to a knee injury sustained in the first game against Long Branch. Although losing 13 seniors (nine of which were starters) both coaches are looking forward to next year with the returning players and an upcoming 12-4 JV record. This combination resulted in the best record in the history of girls basketball at Red Bank Catholic. The team not only made it to the finals of the Casey Tournament for the first time, but captured second place as well. Key to the team were seniors Cynthia Joy, Anne Kretowitz, Joan Fitzpatrick, Michele Smith, Marge Mongolo, Robin Stesner, and Carol O'Brien. Though the majority of the Varsity team was made up of seniors, promising young talent was shown by the underclassmen as well. A few of these future hopefuls are Tara Fodale, Barbara Morris, Debbie O'Neill, and Deirdre McGann. The J.V. team, which suffered only one loss this year, was powered by Diane Joy, Diane Sheehan, Sue Crowley, Jenny Jesowski, and freshman Carolyn Kenny. Coach Kathy Walsh marked this, her fourth year with R.B.C., as her best. J.V. Front Row: C. Kenny, V. Peckus, C. McCIaghlin, D. Sheehan, M. McGann, L. Tassey, E. Ryan, J. Screen. The Casey Hoopsters, led by team captains Peter Tuchol and Mike Kel- ly, completed their first season in the Shore Conference with an impressive first year re- cord. Top contributors to the team's success were seniors Tom Mahon and John McKen- na. Juniors Fran Decker, Mike Dodd, and Doug Proctor kept the team going while Pat Healy held up the sophomore cause. The season was highlighted by the defeat of Monmouth Regional and the double-vic- tory over CBA. The Caseys also took third place in the Casey Tournament. Much of the team's success and recognition must be at- tributed to Coach Malick and his assistants Coach Cichy and Coach Johnson. 114 Front Row: P. Tuchol, M. Kelly. Back row: Head Coach Malick, J. Expectations were realized as the 1980-81 team competed in no less than four Christmas Tournaments, winning the Wall Invitational Tournament and dominating the area parochial schools with acceptance to the South Jersey State Champion- ships. Contributing to the team were individual seniors such as Wally Case, Jim Clancy, Bob Giordano, and Bob McGowan, who all played a key role in this winning season and provided the leadership necessary for a successful team. Other key individual wrestlers were Steve Quattrochi, Brian Pheifer, Mike Shevlin and Steve Mottes. Mr. Santasieri, Mr. Wilbur, and Mr. Costa assisted in coach- ing this year's team and are looking forward, along with Coach Mautner, to another successful season next year. The 1980-81 Athletic season marked, for the first time, a Girls' Indoor Track Team, coached by Mark Bradley. For a first year team, the Red Bank Catholic squad is the largest in the Shore and is rated third in the county. Both the mile and the two mile relay teams were among the top ten in the state. Freshman Kerry O'Neil took 2nd in the 800 meters and 4th in the 400 meters in the Mon- mouth County Championships. She is the fresh- man school record holder in both these events. Other school record holders include junior Kate O'Hern for the indoor 55 meter hurdles, sophomore Marion Lamb for the high jump, senior Helen Sullivan for the shot put, and sen- ior super star Maura Taylor for the 800 and 1500 meters. As a result of their efforts, runners in three events qualified to compete in the elite Penn Relays. Left: Kathy Guar- iglia pre- pares to hand the baton to her team- mate. Suzanne Flanagan leaves her opponent in the dust. Marion Lamb clears the high jump. Trackmen Ascend To New Heights The Boy's Track Team, coming off last year's impressive 6-2 record set even higher sights for themselves with their entrance into the Shore Conference B North Division. Head Coach Jack Rafter had great expecta- tions for this year's team. It was one of the most successful teams that RBC has ever had due to the wealth of experience and depth possessed by its members. Coach Rafter counted heavily upon seniors Tom Baier, Jim McHeffey and Don Wilcox. Leading the junior cause were Pat Regan and Mike DeMonte. Sophomore Frank Baier, the National 14 year old 1500 meter record hold- er, was also a top contender this spring. Tom Gilbride leads the pack around the track. Bottoms up! Mike McNamara sprints ahead. Oh, No! (Peter Schilling) Tom Baier puffs his way over the hurdles to a new school record. Frank Baier crosses the finish line. 122 Aces Of The Court The R.B.C. Boy's Tennis Team optimistically awaited its first venture into Shore Conference play. With the loss of some perennially powerful opponents and the addition of more equally talented teams, Coach Arcomano eyed an im- proved season based on the new schedule and the return of past letter winners. Returning at singles from last year's team were Scott Sugarman and Tom Meade. Return- ing doubles players included Brian Schweers, Paul Herdman, and Fran Decker, all three very capable challengers for this year's single slots. It was the first opportunity for the Shore Con- ference Class B North to get a close look at the R.B.C. Tennis Team. As expected, the Casey racketeers turned out to be a powerful new- comer on the block. The new kid on the block. (Paul Herdman) Fran Decker is all so cool. 123 Coach Drew Arcomano Oops, I missed. (Joe D'Esposito) Girls' Track The Caseyettes were in no way tired out from their season of indoor track. Once the warm weather began, the 1981 Girls' Outdoor Track Team continued its tremendous efforts under the supervision of Head Coach Mark Bradley, and succeeded in keeping up the Casey tradition of spirit and dedication. 124 Swinging Into Golf Prospects for a great season loomed ahead for this year's golf team based on the return of some experienced lettermen and able substitutes. The nucleus was there, the potential was tremendous, and the expectations were fulfilled. There was every reason to believe that this team would tee off to be RBC's greatest contin- gent ever. The team captured many a tournament, exhibiting their great ability on the golf course. Returning Head Coach Bob McCue relied heavily on Bob McGowan, Tim McCabe, and Doug Flannery who showed that they were more than able to handle most of their opponents in dual competition. Coach Carol Kulawiec provided a great deal of encouragement and enthusiasm which helped the girls display the true Casey spirit and determi- nation both on and off the field. The team's schedule consisted of approximately three games a week with practice on non-game days. The softball team joined the fall and winter athletic teams as a competitor in B North Shore Conference play. Front Row: E. Rilley, F. Allegra, S. Canepa, K.Kane, D. Sheehan, K. Crawford, M. Debbs. Realizing this, the Student Council proposed that its first goal should be bridging this gap. As always, the Casey's Student Council succeeded with flying colors. Heading the executive board of the Stu- dent Council was Corey Amdur, an active and capable president. Her vice-president was Felicia Campanella. Secretary was Jill Posnick and Activities Chairperson was Jacqueline Sterner. Under the moderation of Miss Kelly, the executive board headed activities, fund raisers, and assemblies that involved the whole school. With the help of class level officers and the Student Council Committee, the group launched many projects. They danced with elderly people at the nursing home, fought for privileges of the stu- dents, and initiated our school's first blood donor day. The Student Council and the National Honor Soci- ety took turns visiting homes of the elderly, passing out presents, and singing traditional carols. Through the ef- forts of these two clubs, many, many people experienced the joy of being remembered and loved. The Drama Club put on an interpretation of Dickens' classic, A Christmas Carol. This play helped many of us to remember that the spirit of Christmas is in giving, not receiving. Emerald: A Book of the Present, Past, and Future A yearbook is a record of events, places, and faces which are so important to people. The 1980-1981 Emerald is no different. Here is the log of a school year, a year filled with special moments, never-ceasing spirit, and familiar people. The Emerald attempts to capture the memories that each student will one day pack up and treasure. The editors and staff strove to create the best yearbook they could. With the help of the chief editors, Kathleen Guinee and Debbie Edelkraut, and the patience of the mod- erator, Miss Nancy Castner, their goal was realized. The end- less hours of rushing to meet deadlines, panic about late pictures, and rewriting copy were forgotten once the pride of a job well done was felt by all. Everybody Has A dream, the theme of the 1980-1981 Emerald, became the slogan of the yearbook staff. They kept their dream of a special yearbook in sight as they aspired to this goal. 156 Emerald staff takes time out from their hectic schedule to ham it up. With the addition of the Drama Club to R.B.C., this year's productions proved to be no exception to the rule. Under the direction of Mr. Piccuirro, the R.B.C. Drama Club was responsible for the winter production of A Christmas Carol, and the spring production of Kiss Me Kate. The club mem- bers spent long hours after school in pre and post-produc- tion plans. The Plays at Red Bank Catholic are not the only accomplishments of the Drama Club. In order to take full advantage of the students' abilities, the administration provides many creative outlets. One of the most popular is chorus. This class, taught by Miss Meyer and Miss Blasi, helped each member develop a sense of music and rhythm through the use of classical and modern music. Drills were practiced to perfection. Throughout the year, the class used its talents to delight audiences with songs in plays and concerts. Red Bank Catholic Chorus: Front: N. Tanga, A. Portuendo, D. Marrotta, W. Ryan, K. Corcoran, V. Stagecraft: Behind the Scenes A twist to the old proverb Behind every successful man, there stands a woman , could be: Behind every successful Red Bank Catholic production, there stands a dynamic stage- craft crew. These unsung stars of the Stagecraft Club cut, nail, paint, and decorate the scenery for the stage productions. Throughout the plays, concerts, and scenes, the stagecraft crew changes the scenery, adjusts the lights, or sets the stage in order. Without their creative talents, the stars could not shine so brightly. Tom Scotti, director of the set, performing superhuman feats on the stage. 162 ■Mr Maria Gillen and Ed Throckmorton starred in the musical comedy Kiss Me Kate. THE MAIN INGREDIENT: STUDENTS Red Bank Catholic's success depends on its students. Whether the project is a play, a contest, a fund raiser, or a buffet, it is up to the student body to make it successful. Cooperation, responsibility, and en- thusiasm are some of the ingredients that these students possess, and thanks to them, RBC is a nicer place to be. 163 Willy Ryan and Brian Schweers in Kiss Me Kate KISS ME KATE, A MUSICAL COMEDY The annual spring play has long been a tradition for Red Bank Catholic. This year's play, Kiss Me Kate, proved to be as overwhelming a success as past plays. Under the direc- tion of Mr. Piccuiero, the student cast skillfully performed Cole Porter's modern version of The Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare. The Stars of the play were the actors, actresses, direc- tors, and supervisors. Miss Meyer directed the orchestra while Miss Blasi supervised costumes and dance. Tom Scotti and Rich Madigan designed the set and scenery, and Pat Connolly was in charge of lighting. Kate refuses to let Petruchio have any support. Ed Throckmorton (Pertuchio) carries Maria Gillen (Kate) off to teach her to be a wife. Petruchio and dancer choreographer Tracy England dance flawlessly. 164 Cast of Kiss Me Kate Indomitable Kate glares at Petruchio: I hate men! It was our dream to produce a book that would enable everyone to always remember the year 1980-1981: the people, the events, the good times and the bad. This is our dream, now a reality. We are deeply thankful to all those people who have given their time and support to aid us in the pursuit of our dream. A very special thanks goes to Miss Nancy Castner, our advisor. She has been the one person we could all count on at all times for any need. Without her, this dream could never have become a reality. Miss Mary Monaghan, our publish- er's representative, and Mrs. Dorothy Senerchia, also gave us invaluable help and encouragement. We thank our parents, families, and friends for their constant love and patience as we struggled with the numerous difficulties encountered throughout the year.
