CHAMPIONS ONCE MORE The rugged Casey Cross Country team successfully met the challenge of the competition, and brought our school an even deeper pride in its athletic achievements. For nine years, since Coach Jack Rafter introduced the sport to R.B.C., our runners have toiled to give our team a reputation that our op- ponents would fear. This year we again reached the position of state recog- nition for our cross country victories. Although our team consisted of mostly sophomores and juniors, the boys quickly matured and came through when, as Coach Rafter puts it, the money is down.” After an auspicious regular season, the Casey runners finished a dis- appointing seventh in the Monmouth County Championships. That loss seemed to spark the team to greater gains as the following week we stunned numerous top quality teams with a victory in the John Stewart Memorial Turkey Trot. The following week the green and gold placed a close second to Queen of Peace in the Parochial Conference Championships in Elizabeth. With the State Championsh ps at Pennsauken High School awaiting our boys as the final and most important meet, we anxiously anticipated our chance to flaunt our long distance team to the 24 other schools in the meet. When the dust had finally cleared our runners all proudly held their silver medals for a closely contended and well-deserved second place. Among the outstanding ind vidual performances, were names as Jim Rei- ser, Kevin Burrows, Bill Wilson, Pat Hickey, Tom Kelly, Frank Doyle, Mark Boutote, Kevin Fitzpatrick, along with many other team members. The fine leadership of captains Bill Butler, Dan Nardiello, and Bill Wilson, along with outstanding individual efforts, created an inspiration for the entire team. Not only will the Caseys have their entire first seven men back for next year, the green and gold may look forward to the services of freshman Jim Daly who stunned cross country enthusiasts by winning the New Jersey Parochial Conference Championship, defeating 154 runners from all Paro- chial powers throughout the state. rw k m 29 Co-Captain Bill Butler Co-Captain Bill Wilson CROSS Warming up for a successful season (top). Coach; Kevin Attridge. 34 Maureen Marley Jeanette Sasson Betsy Cangialosi GIRL'S CROSS COUNTRY Red Bank Catholic Girl’s Cross Country Team remained undefeated for their third straight year of active com- petition. Leading the Caseyettes with their 6-0 record, in- cluding one shut-out, were Maureen Marley, Betsy Cang- ialosi, Jeanette Sasson, Kim Kelly, and Diana Dubel. In future years great things are expected from freshmen Jeannie Altar, Vickie Halpin, and Kathy Kolarsick. All of the team’s hard work and dedication paid off when they came away with both first place individual and team trophies in the Monmouth County Championship. In the two post-seasonal invitational meets, in which schools from both Ocean and Monmouth Counties partici- pated, the R.B.C. harriers again placed first with low scores of 32 and 36. From its impressive record of wins it is apparent that the R.B.C. Girl’s Cross Country Team well-earned the title of Undefeated State Champs” for the 1971-72 season. FOOTBALL The 1971 football season fell short of expectations as the Caseys turned in a 0-7-2 record. Responsible, in part, for the poor performance this year was a lack of good luck and a lack of good ball handling. No matter how hard they tried the Caseys could not, as Mr. McNamara said put it all together and operate as a unit.” This was due partly to the beating that the vet- eran Red Bank team inflicted upon both the offensive and defensive squads in their first outing. During the middle of the season the team showed signs of great improvement and became a cohesive, spirited unit. Facing tough opposition all the way the Caseys reached peak performance against a St. Peter’s team that was favored by about 20 points. The Caseys held them scoreless till the closing minutes of the game. The game finished an 8-8 tie but it had cost RBC many of its key first string men. The team fought hard the last few games but were hurt by costly mistakes. Individual standouts on offense and defense included Leon Maziekien, Mike Kester, John More, John Hen- nessey, and Mike Stahl. Hopes for next year are high as many letterman will be returning. R.B.C.’s 1972 Varsity Basketball Team compiled a 16-9 record in a season overshadowed by a forfeit that pre- vented participation in the State Championship. The Casey five began this season strangely, by pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the Shore area. They defeated a tough St. Rose team in overtime, and continued to run over opponents in posting a 6-1 record. The season was cli- maxed by a superb Casey Holiday Festival, in which the cagers won the whole tournament. Tim Yerves won the Most Valuable Player Award for the tournament, and along with Mark Voetsch, was named to the All-Tourna- ment Team. Co-Captains Mark Voetsch and Brendan Kelly lead the team in scoring and rebounding respectively. Tim Yerves, Paul McGuinnes, and Bob Pignataro rounded out the starting five. Sophomore Dave Bauer stepped in admi- rably when McGuinnes was injured late in the season. Hopefully, next year’s team will be able to accomplish what this year’s team did and was not able to do. The cali- ber of underclassmen ballplayers seems to indicate that this will occur. 84 An easy lay up for Brendan Kelly at C.B.A. Paul McGuinnes scores two points against St. Rose. Mark Voetsch drives against C.B.A. Dave Bauer attempts a steal from Long Branch. Tim Yerves pulls down a pass. One final time-out before winning the Casey Festival. Dale Cofer 1972 GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Back Row: Mr. McNamara, Wendy McCormack, Nancy Neilson, Ginger Giersch, Patsy Jones, Jo Ann Harper, Mary Ann Rus- cio, Helen Conley. Middle Row: Ann Halton, Maureen Ayres, Carmen Blake, Claire Walton. Front Row: Patty Seamen, Liz Barnett and Terry McCue, captains, Doreen Ryan, Kerry Higgins. Not present: Kim Canepa. The young Casey team, only two years old, com- pleted a very successful season, winning twelve and losing only four games. They reached the state semi-fi- nals, only to lose a very tough game by four points to St. Joe’s of Toms River. The team’s success was essentially due to the fine coaching jobs of Mr. and Mrs. McNamara, and to strong teamwork. Terry McCue, Doreen Ryan, and Kerry Hig- gins provided plenty of scoring punch, while Ginger Giersch and Elizabeth Barnett did a great defensive job off the boards. Helen Conley led the reserves Mary- ann Ruscio, Joann Harper, Patsy Jones, and Ann Hal- ton, in coming through during tight spots. The Casey team of the future, with freshmen and sophomores Kim Canepa, Nancy Neilson, Claire Wal- ton, Carmen Blake, Maureen Ayres, Patty Seamen, and Wendy McCormack, has a very bright future indeed. The Caseyettes demonstrating offensive and defensive strategies. Once again Caseyettes surpass their opponents in winning the jump ball. WRESTLING Wrestling has always been a bright spot in R.B.C.’s varsity competition record and this year is no ex- ception. Due mainly to injuries, which cost the grap- plers the few vital points that they eventually lost by, the team finished with a 6-7-1 slate. The season was climaxed with a 29-21 victory over the favored C.B.A. squad. This was the first time in the school’s five year wrestling history that R.B.C. had de- feated their parochial rival. Convincing victories over Shore Regional, St. Joseph’s (T.R.) and Admiral Farra- gut Academy demonstrated the real talent of certain individuals. Outstanding records were compiled by: Paul Kirgin 20-3-1, Jim Schultz 16-3-1, John Johnston 13-3-1, Larry Donovan 9-7, and Hilary Nortz 6-6. In tournament competition R.B.C. captured many honors. Beginning with the Wall Christmas Tourna- ment in which John Keale placed second and Paul Kir- gin, third, and continuing through the districts in which Paul Kirgin and Jim Schultz took first places and John Johnston, John Keale, and Hilary Nortz took third places, it was evident that the team was in high spirits. R.B.C. District Champs then went on to the Region- al where both Jim Schultz and Paul Kirgin were de- feated by previous Regional champions. Paul was the only one to place, as he took third for the best finish in the history of R.B.C. wrestling. Next year’s team should be impressive if the strength of the J.V. team is any measure of what is to come. Co-captain John Johnston Co-captain Paul Kirgin 90 Standing: Coach Visbeck, Larry Donovan, John More, Frank Reiss, John Ryan, Paul Echelbach, Kneeling: Jim Schultz, Hilary Nortz, Tom Fuory, Paul Kirgin, John Johnston. The 1972 Boys' Track Team, under the new leadership of Head Coach Tom Olivadotti, looks brighter than ever; led by seniors A1 Cestero, holder of 3 school records, a shore record, and a state parochial record in the long, high, and triple jumps; Dan Nardiello, 1971 Parochial State champ in the 180 low hurdles and school record holder in this event; star quarter miler Bob Short who anchors the record mile relay unit; John Marley, a first year man ready for tough competition in the quarter; Bill Butler, ace half miler; veteran pole vaulter Hilary Nortz and Mike Stahl and Nick Alfano in the shot put and discus. These seniors combined with talented underclassmen Jim Reiser in the two mile, Kevin Fitzpatrick in the half mile, and upcoming hurdles Clay Kingsberry and Jim Tomaino, should produce quite a year for the Casey Cinderman! The girls ran in the Penn Relays, the Virginia Relays, and the State Meet, besides their nine victorious dual meets. Led by Senior captains Rita Donnelly, Helen Conely, and Judy MacGowan, the Green Machine continued to roll. Outstanding senior hurdlers included Paula Shellen- bach and Gail Trotter; sprinters Anne Kelsey, Cindy Lewis, Jane Stewart, and Kathy Ruhl; weight girls Pam Patock, Jo An Valenczius, and Ginger Giersch; and jumpers Emme Thorpe and Liz Barnett. Hopes for the future include sophomore half milers Maureen Marley, Betsy Cangialosi, and Sheila Kelly; sprinters Debbie Rathlev, Rita Sagurton, Kathy Dwyer, and Sue Nagengast; and Kerry Higgins, Ann Halton, and JoAnn Harper with the weight division. SENIOR STARS Shortshop Gene Munn. Hard work and determination proved worthwhile for the 1972 Baseball Team. With the assistance of Coaches Joe Kristofik and Paul Christopher, the team showed ad- mirable ability in all positions, which led to a very successful season. The team, led by tri-captains Larry Desi- der, Dennis Lee, and John Ovens, included seniors Mark Wagner, Kevin McWilliams, John D’Aloia, Bob Coleman, and Mike Pilone. Juniors Tom Cronauer, Bob Murphy, Paul McGuinnes and sophomore Joe D’Onofrio (as Varsity men this year) will be a great asset to next season’s team. 108 Captains Dennis Lee and Larry Desider practice pitching and fielding. Since we did create a work of art competely different from all of its predecessors, we wanted to keep at least this page an R.B.C. tradition. There are many of you who think that being editors of the yearbook this year has been a joy ride. Little do you know how wrong you are! This year was one of headaches, heart- aches, hassles and general grief. We can’t begin to tell you all of the times when one or both of us threatened to walk out and leave this monster” to chance. There were many times that only a good cry kept us going. Obviously, we did not give up. This was due in part to our dedication(?) but mostly, to all those who worked with us this past year. So, as the co-editors, there are a few people that we wish to thank for their help and co- operation. Besides each other (and God) these people have gone above and beyond the call of duty and truly deserve all the best: The Administration—for letting us spend the money we did. The Faculty—for not reporting us for all the classes we didn’t quite make. Carole King—for the rights to her song You’ve Got A Friend”. Nancy and Mike from Bradbury Sales Publishing—for their extra copy sheets, receipt books, photo tags, and physical support on deadline days. Johnny Prignoli—for his perfect pictures and poor jokes. Sister Mary Francesca, Financial Advisor—for her perpetual insistance: YOU’RE SPENDING TOO MUCH!” which kept us within our budget. Our Photographers—especially Mark, Eddie, Jack, and Bob, for lifesaving AND in- criminating shots. Linda Wigginton moderator—whose contageous spirit and enthusiasm (along with an endless supply of pizza) kept us going throughout the year. And most of all— Our staff: Kathy, Betsy, Trice, Marie, Anita, Peggy, John and Marty. In the beginning they knew no more about the yearbook than we did, but they never let that stop them. They have gained a knowledge that they will never forget, (neither will we!) They were always there with a shoulder to cry on and a kleenex when we needed it, and it is to them, that we have a special thank you. Relievedly, BxXJlOxiJux.
