HIS EXCELLENCY GEORGE W. AHR Bishop of Trenton . . . THE GLO OF VERY REVEREND THOMAS J. FRAIN Superintendent of Secondary Schools Diocese of Trenton 2 RIGHT REVEREND EMMETT A. MONAHAN Pastor, St. James Church Director, Red Bank Catholic High School CHRISTIAN SPIRIT SISTER MARY DOROTHEA Supervisor of Secondary Education Sisters of Mercy 3 THE SPA RK OF INNO VA TION AQIIM Ml As a new principal. Sister Percylee was not content to sit on the sidelines. Even during the first week of school, she could be seen in the halls and on the school grounds getting to know us. She ad- dressed us at formal assemblies and ate with us in the cafeteria. She delivered new daily bulletins to the teachers’ mail- boxes, but it wasn’t unusual to see her stop in the hall to retrieve a stray paper airplane. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and that was manifested at our first pep ral- lies and attendance at the games. The class of 1971 is grateful to Sister for rekindling that spark of ingenuity and Casey spirit which has helped to make our senior year a memorable one. SISTER PERCYLEE HART 4 . . . Who would have be- lieved that for us, the seemingly interminable four years ahead would bind us to- gether so closely. Our class was united in the joys of victory, friendship, and accomplishment. We relied upon each other for strength in moments of defeat, tragedy, and loss. The class of’71 was never known for mediocrity. Once we got down to the every day business of high school life, our natural leaders stood out in the crowd. We elected Rick Conley and Annie Quinlan to represent our class. The class of 1971 was the biggest ever enrolled at R.B.C. Under Rick and Annie we hustled: collecting bottles for the bottle drive, trying to out-clap the Seniors at pep rallies, getting ads for Annie Get Your Gun, and even mastering the intricacies of Algebra I. Summer vacation came and went, and we found ourselves back in the school- yard — minus the convent, a familiar landmark, and also minus a few good friends. Tragedy had struck when a new member of the clan. Joanne Cordaro, was killed in the crash of a small, private plane. We began that year with a surge 01 Sophomore spirit. We were no longer the babies of the school. Under the leadership of Rick Conley and Fran Lewis, we pushed to the top of all the drives and exhibited the strongest Casey spirit ever. We added our firm support to make Guvs and Dolls a success. Was it possible that two years had gone by? We were upperclassmen! We had learned a lot; we strove to learn more. With the reality of our first try at college boards, we studied hard. But we Juniors never let too much study interfere with our knack for having fun. The prospect of driver licenses, class rings. The Snow- ball, and our first Prom, Scarborough Fair, kept the air buzzing with excitement. Big winning seasons in football, basketball, and track were results of the great school spirit fostered by our officers: Jim Redmond and Annie Quinlan. Again the class of Tl was there to lend a helping hand to the cookie drive for Vietnam and obtaining ads and boosters for Pajama Game. Our one great loss, and the one most felt by the students, was the news that Sister Mary would not be there to meet us in the fall. With her went a part of “old tradition'’ at R.B.C., but we were adaptable, and welcomed the challenge of change. We began our Senior Year brimming with optimism. We were greeted by our new principal. Sister Percylee, and also many innovations. New horizons were opening up when, suddenly, just as the football season got under way, tragedy struck again. Our classmate, and football player. Jim Lemig, was killed in an au- tomobile accident. The entire Senior class attended the funeral, and the tragedy of his death served to bring us closer. The never-idle Seniors occupied themselves with worries and college applica- tions, and all our other last-minute duties. Yet, we still had time for planning the big events of the year — our graduation, our Prom, and our weekend class trip — a novelty at R.B.C. Even our pep rallies gained a new dimension bon fires at White Road Field. Also the candy drive and Marne would not have been the successes they were if Seniors had riot lent their enthusiasm to the tasks. Our class was the first to boast seven sets of twins. We distinguished ourselves by reforming the structure of the Student Council by providing more representa- tion. Dave Manyak was chosen President, Senior Class President, Jim Redmond, and Senior Vice President, Ricky Preston. For the first time, class representatives were added to the Council. They were: Kevin Dempsey, Mary Beth Keale, Tony King, and Yvette Parron. Some have left our class. Those of us who remain . . . friends . . . remember the good times. And though we cannot forget, time heals the memory of the sad events. We look ahead to the future, and the contribution we will make, however small, to the lives of our brothers. Now, as we leave the source of our initial light, we realize that others have come to take our place. We must be strong enough to break away without losing any of our brilliance. We must share a spark of that light with everyone we meet, ancl if we can do this, our goal has surely been recognized. “For it is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness ' THE CLASS OF DAVID MICHAEL MANYAK Student Council President FRANCES MARC.ARl I I IW IS Student Council Vice-president JAMES CHARLES REDMOND Senior Class President I REDRIC A ANN PRESTON Senior Class Vice-president 11 DOUGLAS PAUL ABEL MARGARET ROSE ALESS! Early in September, it was suggested to the PTA officers that a vital source of energy had not been tapped. Mothers of the students were con- tacted and generously offered to serve in any capacity. While some mothers were used to proctor study classes, others typed tests, corrected papers, helped in the cafeteria, and worked in both the library and Religion Resource Room. Red Bank Catholic and its Parent-Teacher Association thank these women for their gener- osity and interest. 93 'XSTATE hampions s p 0 r t s Bob Scotti 1970 SEASON Red Bank L 27-12 St. Joseph W 33-14 Long Branch L 27- 6 Shore Regional L ro i O Netcong W 27- 7 Mater Dei W 15-12 Immaculata W 14- 2 Snyder W 20-14 Rumson W 7- 6 1970 Record 6-3-0 THE 1970 COACHES Ray Visbeck. Montanaro, and Hunger The 1970 season was a hard-fought campaign that resulted in Red Bank Catholic’s football team being crowned the first Champions of the New Jersey Catholic Federation. Among the many other honors and titles captured by the Caseys in a very productive year were: the longest winning streak in Monmouth County; the top parochial high school in this district for the second year in a row; and a team rating of number 6 in the entire state. One of the highlights of this 1970 Casey conquest of the Federation’s crown was an impressive win over a much improved St. Joseph’s squad. Much credit must be given to R.B.C.’s offense for opening up gaping holes in the Seraph’s lines. In spite of the opening loss to Red Bank, and the losses of the third and fourth games to tough Long Branch and Shore Regional squads (in which good performances were turned in by the rugged backfield of King, Keenoy, Thomas. Shulte, and Wesel) the Caseys showed tenaciousness in both offense and defense. The hard fighting lines punished Netcong, first, and. then. Mater Dei. In both these games John Shulte and Joe Wesel rushed for 100 yards apiece. Another impressive victory, this time against the tough Jersey City team, Snyder, again demonstrated the effective running of the Casey backs. Ken Hofer, adding his kicking conversions, has proven to be the difference in many games. Through his performance at Rumson, he helped upset the Bulldogs and improve the team’s record. It now stands at six wins and three losses. Returning Varsity and an excellent Frosh team guarantee the Caseys future winning seasons. 97 Joe Wesel John Thomas %? THE 1971 CO AC HRS Rev. Lou kralovieh. Pat I armer. Joe Krislolik. and John S.uterly Emblematic of the spirit of RBC was the 1970-71 Basketball team. Their effort, desire, and above all, their ability to work together as a squad was proven during the second half of the season when the Caseys were unstoppable. Theirs was a mix- ture of good speed and tough defense. Because their attack was evenly balanced with Mike Bobiak and Chris Boutote tearing the net to pieces; Mark Fitzgerald, Brian Commons, Mark Voetsch, and Roger Greka controlling the ball; and Dave Manyak and Brendon Kelly controlling the boards, the Caseys forced many games into overtime. Highlights of the season in- cluded the demolishing of Henry Hudson, the Casey Tourna- ment winner; Saint Mary’s. South Amboy; and Middletown, twice each; and the upset of a number three-ranked Saint Rose Team. Another high point was the thrilling one point victory over Saint Joe’s (TR) that was decided in the last 13 seconds. A good deal of credit for the revolutionary success of the team must go to first year Coach Joe Kristofik, and his assis- tants John Satterly and Pat Farmer for their continuing hard work. With the return of such Varsity players as Mark Voetsch, Brendon Kelly, and Gregory Gregg the Caseys will be assured of continuing success. The oncoming rush of women's liberation has brought another female sport to the hallowed halls of RBC; that sport, basketball. Inspired by a principal with innovative ideas, and a willing coach, the Athletic Department agreed to foster a girls team and acquired uniforms with the donations received from the proceeds of an aggreeable faculty basketball team. Sister Percylee took a more than active part in the team bv subbing as assistant coach for Tom Loewenstine, the girls head basketball coach. The squad consisted of eight seniors, six juniors, and two freshmen, with Senior Sue Gladis and Junior Liz Barnett serving as co-captains. The primary objectives of the team this year were to begin building up their collective strengths and to give them practical experience through exposure to the courts and other teams. Jackson, and Long Branch. The strength and depth of the R.B.C. matmen resulted in easy victories over Monmouth Regional (54-0). Allentown (50-0) and a (20-20) tie with C.B.A. The team consisted mainly of seniors whose ex- perience was exemplified by setting a new school record for the fastest pin by Bill Clayton in nine seconds of the first period. For the second year in a row the Casey team placed second in the Wall Christmas Tournament with co-captain Tony King capturing fourth place in the 141 weight class; Seniors Larry Carney and Jack Flannery taking second places in the 148 and 168 weight classes; co-captain Jim Walsh capturing first place in the 178 weight class; and Juniors John Johnston and Paul Kirgin capturing third places in the 106 and 123 weight classes. These three and a combination of other runners continued the championship form that has become a part of Red Bank Catholic High School. The sprinters, Bob McGettigan. Mark Shea, John Annunziata. John Schmitz, Scott Wills, and Wally Kings- bery; gave a good account of themselves, as did Joe Wesel. John Schulte, and Dan Nardiello in the hurdles, and AI Cestero in the high jump . In the weights division John Mooney, Jim Hoehn. Mike Stahl, and Rick Barrett proVed that hard work and hustle bring dividends. Although the loss of fine senior runners will prove hard for next year’s Varsity track team, efforts o underclassmen will bolster the future seasons. GIRLS TRACK The experience of previous competition uhd the powerhouse of talent that had developed in the Freshman girls who had proved their distance capabilities during the tall season re- tained the unique status of the 1971 Girls 1 rack Team The distance runners included Eileen Rich, Maureen Marlev, Je- anette Sasso and Kim jKelly.
