A small yet powerful Casey football team, under new head coach John Dondero and assistants Thomas Murdock, Peter Brennan, and James McNamara, compiled a 2-6 record against some of the roughest opposition in the state. Vigorous workouts at the Farmers’ and Gardeners’ Association Camp from September 1 to 7 got the team into fighting shape. After an opening day setback by Red Bank High, a fired-up Casey team bounced back to defeat a tough Long Branch squad 12-0, as Mark Sohl and Gene Arnone played an excellent defensive game. The Caseys then played one of their best games of the season against Seton Hall Prep; a strong defensive unit allowed only one tally. Costly fumbles kept the Green and Gold from scoring, however, and Seton Hall was victorious 6-0. After successive losses to Sayreville, Holy Cross, and Shore Conference Champion Middletown, the Caseys de- feated St. Peter’s in a thrilling and hotly contested game. With only 33 seconds remaining, the defensive unit swarmed over the St. Peter’s quarterback for a touchback and a 2-0 victory. The season ended with a 32-7 Thanks- giving setback from a highly rated Rumson squad. Post-season honors were heaped on Mark Sohl, who received All-Shore, All-Catholic, All-Diocese, and second string All-State recognition. Peter Armstrong, Eugene Arnone, and Marty Mihok earned honorable mention in the All-Shore ratings. All-Diocese honors also went to Marty Mihok. The Casey defense foils a touchdown drive of the Sayreville eleven on the one yard line. 26
