NEW BOOKS, NEW COVERS—Daniel Monahan, Lawrence La Pare, Patrick Farrell, James Gambacorto, John Golden, Ralph Cesarano, and Jeffrey Costura go through the annual job of covering books. 20 ADVICE AND ENCOURAGEMENT are given by Monsignor Monahan at the beginning of the year. Autumn To May” As the doors of RBC are flung open, a rejuvenated spirit fills the deserted corridors. Soon we hear familiar conversations sweeping throughout the halls. Some fellow Caseys are busy renewing old friendships and searching for new ones, while still others are grumbling at the news of an eight o’clock class. But the real beginning of our school year is the Mass of the Holy Spirit, during which we join with Monsignor Monahan in praying for another year of fame and fortune for ourselves and for our Alma Mater. THE CASEY CODE is explained to Timothy Farrell, Francis Hennigan, Patricia Dunne, and Joan Farrington by Harry Copperthwaite. 21 “NO STUDY!” exclaims Kathleen Healy as Jeffrey Costura and Robert Cook look at Ellen White’s schedule. Student 1965 STUDENT COUNCIL Front Row: Regina Curtis, Secretary; Michael Fischer, President; Margaret McCue, Vice- President; Brian Dempsey, Treasurer. Second Row: Richard Havel, Assembly Chairman; Peter Armstrong, Athletic Chairman; Dorothy Satterly, Bulletin Board Chairman; Judith Piccolie, Clubs Chairman; Christine Glading, Guidance Chairman; Elizabeth Move lie, Mission Crusade Chairman; Raymond McCue, Service Chairman. The gavel falls and the school springs to life. Clubs and committees, dances, assembly programs, p. a. messages— all originate in efforts of the Student Council. Guided by Sister Mary Theresina, Council members lead fellow Caseys in everything from Project YOUth to pep rallies. Work of officers and student body was rewarded this year when RBC was named Honor School by the New Jersey Association of High School Councils. This group’s success makes it one of the school’s biggest assets toward its goal of service to God and Country. CASEYS ARE KEPT INFORMED of Student Council news by the Student Council bulletin board. Reading last week’s events are Freshman Class President Thomas McBride and Student Council Chairmen Christine Glading and Judith Piccolie. “MUSIC TO EAT LUNCH BY?” queries Mary Mullins of Rita Held. Lorraine Sasson awaits the decision as Mark Sohl calls for attention. Council RETURNING FROM A MEETING of the Monmouth County Association of High School Councils are Student Council officers, Margaret McCue, Brian Dempsey, Michael Fischer and Regina Curtis. SMILES OF APPROVAL shine on the faces of Margaret McCue, Sister Theresina, moderator, Dorothy Satterly and Elizabeth Movelle as they put the finishing touches on the 1965 Student Council Project YOUth scrapbook. “THAT’S A GOOD SUGGESTION—a three day weekend!” Dennis O’Keefe and Michael Fischer empty the suggestion box as Peter Eagan dictates to Regina Curtis a possible question for discussion. A small yet powerful Casey football team, under new head coach John Dondero and assistants Thomas Murdock, Peter Brennan, and James McNamara, compiled a 2-6 record against some of the roughest opposition in the state. Vigorous workouts at the Farmers’ and Gardeners’ Association Camp from September 1 to 7 got the team into fighting shape. After an opening day setback by Red Bank High, a fired-up Casey team bounced back to defeat a tough Long Branch squad 12-0, as Mark Sohl and Gene Arnone played an excellent defensive game. The Caseys then played one of their best games of the season against Seton Hall Prep; a strong defensive unit allowed only one tally. Costly fumbles kept the Green and Gold from scoring, however, and Seton Hall was victorious 6-0. After successive losses to Sayreville, Holy Cross, and Shore Conference Champion Middletown, the Caseys de- feated St. Peter’s in a thrilling and hotly contested game. With only 33 seconds remaining, the defensive unit swarmed over the St. Peter’s quarterback for a touchback and a 2-0 victory. The season ended with a 32-7 Thanks- giving setback from a highly rated Rumson squad. Post-season honors were heaped on Mark Sohl, who received All-Shore, All-Catholic, All-Diocese, and second string All-State recognition. Peter Armstrong, Eugene Arnone, and Marty Mihok earned honorable mention in the All-Shore ratings. All-Diocese honors also went to Marty Mihok. The Casey defense foils a touchdown drive of the Sayreville eleven on the one yard line. 26 Junior Tim Hennessy (28) and senior Gene Arnone (38) double team a Holy Cross player, opening a hole for seniors Bob Keagle (16) and Doug Hillman (10). The lone Casey in a sea of white jerseys is Peter Armstrong. It takes three Middletown men to stop Pete after one of his long gainers. 28 Phil Jankouskas (49), Dennis O’Keefe and Bob Keagle (16) form a wall of blockers for fleet halfback Doug Hillman. mm- Doug Hillman goes for good yardage against Seton Hall Prep with the help of a vicious block from Dennis O’Keefe. 29 Caseys Mark Sohl (41), Pat Farrell, and Alfonse DeMaria swarm over a Middletown back, as Joe Bouffard (56) comes to the aid of his three teammates. Fullback Bob Keagle (16) awaits the on-rushing Holy Cross defense as Junior quarterback Dennis O’Keefe (15) uncorks a pass to one of his receivers. Bob Keagle drives for extra yardage against a tough Holy Cross team. 30 The opening of the ’64-65 school year brought many new people and events to Red Bank Catholic. The most recent arrival, Mr. Joseph Kristofik revamped the boys’ intra- mural program. His efforts have been met with high interest from the Caseys. The boys faithfully came on their appointed afternoons to do battle on the makeshift grid- iron. For the finals, a large audience was on on hand to watch 12A defeat 1 1 C, 20 to 0. Mrs. Evelyn Russo handled the girls’ pro- gram, and the response was equally enthusi- astic. Twenty-seven homerooms entered their teams in the girls’ volleyball tournament. After a six week period 1 IE and 12F remained; 12F won in a thrill packed contest. The senior elimination match pitted 12C against 12A. Here John Golden and Bob Grimm of 1 2C do their best to stop the strong rush of Mike Basile and Bob Tafilowski on 1 2C’s Q.B. Jose Delgado. Intramurals Ernie Forcino looks for an open receiver as seniors Jerry Buckalew and Bob Alchus break through the junior line. Casey Tri-Captains Joseph Schweers, John Mautner, and Brian Dempsey discuss pre-meet strategy before the Shore Regional contest. After posting a 14-3 record last year, the Casey Cross Country team prepared for this year’s campaign by holding summer practices at the beach and before school during the early morning hours. The hard work paid off for coach Jack Rafter’s runners as they swept their first nine meets. Paced by Bob Byron, Bill Ptak, John Maut- ner, and the Dempsey brothers, the cindermen finished sixth in the annual Roselle Catholic Turkey Trot at Waranoco Park. Bob Byron led the team to fifth place in the Monmouth Col- lege Invitational as he placed first, setting a new meet record. In the New Jersey Inter- scholastic Athletic Association Parochial Divi- sion, the Caseys placed eighth overall, winding up the season with a 9-2 record. SENIOR MEMBERS of the Future Nurses Club Patricia Reed, Patricia O’Shaugnessy, Mary Ann Dowell and President Mary Jo Strollo discuss their plans for fall speakers. 37 THE NEWSPAPER IS PERFECT, and Kathleen Santagata and Mary Frankel give a sigh of relief as they read over the Signpost. “THESE CANDID SHOTS really give a lift to the paper,” says Christine Glading to Kathleen Kolar and Sarah Hilton, looking on. “PUT MORE PUNCH in your football copy,” Mr. Hintelmann advises Thomas Cavanagh. Six times a year an expectant quiet prevails at Red Bank Catholic; students eagerly await their copies of the Signpost. Finally! Then they settle down to do some serious reading, like “Spot for Tot” and “Casey Carousel.” No outsider really knows what goes on at the staff meetings. Does Editor George Severini give assignments and the staff instantly fall to their tasks? Or do Sister Mary Anina and Mr. Hintelmann endure blank stares and groans of pain? By efficiency or inspiration, the product rates First Place from Quill and Scroll and Scholastic Press Association of New Jersey, and 2600 subscribers a year. With experienced moderators and a staff who work beyond the call of duty— five editors attended summer classes in journalism at Long Branch High School— The Signpost has brought the students twenty-one years of news, views, sports, and humor as the voice of Red Bank Catholic. 38 AFTER 1600 ENVELOPES Barbara Jean De Mio and Veronica Ostrander finally come to the end. Project The challenge: to plant our seeds of love. How to meet it: through Project YOUth, our annual opportunity to realize our importance and responsibilities as Catholic youth in a modern world. The reward: a tree of unity for all mankind. From the daily public address announcements from late October to the end of November came encouragement to plant our seeds of love through the sacraments. By following Christ the Leader in all phases of school life, we could deepen these roots in love. With posters and weekly bulletins the Student Council led us in its endeavors to nourish these growing roots with knowledge and grace. Our parents observed our efforts during Open House On Student Leadership Day we tried our hands at teaching and administering the school. Joining in sacrifice at Mass, we culminated our cultivation of the tree of unity. As long as we continue to nourish it, we and all men will enjoy its fruit. “GOOD MORNING,” says Michael Fischer, principal of Red Bank Catholic, as he starts Student Leadership Day. STUDENT TEACHER Daniel Monahan explains resultant forces to the physics class. 40 Youth “TH!S BAD APPLE won’t do for Teacher Appreciation Day,” says Harry Copperthwaite to Margaret McCue, Richard Havel, and Regina Curtis. MANKIND’S TREE OF UNITY THE CLIMAX OF PROJECT YOUTH, a Mass of Thanksgiving, is offered for the students of Red Bank Catholic. 41 Members of the band, led by Mr. Giampietro, pose for the Casey photographer. 42 “THANK YOU!” says Denise Schmidt to John Bellantoni, as Elizabeth Zebrowski assembles her instrument. “HOW ABOUT THIS WAY?” says Mary Mullins to Mary Lee Boesewetter as they decorate for “IT’S A MOD, MOD, MOD WORLD!” Martha McNiskin and Mary Adele Meehan create another design. 43 “PASSING THE TIME’’ with friends makes an enjoyable evening fly. CROSSING THE DRAWBRIDGE to Arthur’s court Joanne Ward and her date are welcomed by Mr. Dondero and Mr. McNamara. Donna Roper straightens Theodore Bratton’s boutonniere as they enter the prom. A CUP OF PUNCH refreshes seniors Eugene Arnone and Elizabeth Reaves at the Junior Prom. For One Brief There Was Called 44 “MAY I HAVE THIS DANCE?” asks Charles Boyle as Lynn Schreihofer watches him sign her dance card. Shining Moment A Place Camelot” JUNIOR PROM The shining moment of our junior year is prom night when the hardy efforts of the long-suffering committees are rewarded by the medieval aura of “A Night In Camelot.” As we make our grand entrance Queen Guinevere and King Arthur, Magdalena Korcynski and over the royal drawbridge, we leave James Martin- rei9n over their kin9dom- the bustle of the roaring 60’s and for these few hours admire the beautiful decor of King Arthur’s palace. While we dance the night away to the music of the Cavaliers, the clock rapidly pushes its way towards midnight and the anticipated coronation of Magdalena Korczynski and James Martin as our king and queen. Mary Ann Dietz and her date pause for a few moments as the photographer snaps a picture. 45 Juniors dance away the hours at “A NIGHT IN CAMELOT. WINTER BRINGS THE SOUNDS OF PEACE ON EARTH . . . “Jordan’s river is chi lly and co Id, Chills the body but not the soul. The river is deep and the river is wide; Greener pastures on the other side.’’ Even H2O presents a challenge when it has to be distilled. Sister Thomas Aquinas smiles approvingly as Patricia Maloney and Carol Gallagher demonstrate “how to” and John Mautner records the results. Son, Always Best You O Lord! Do the You Can.” The new electric typewriters make typing a breeze for future secretaries Eleanor Welsh, Jeanne Akers, Frances Blair, and Regina Skelton, while Margaret Conk busies herself with progressive filing. The Fort Monmouth Museum is the scene as Lawrence LaPare, John Bellantoni and Patricia Gil argue the necessity of further space exploration. The space exhibit holds more interest for Mary Ellen McDonald. 48 No habla espanol!” pleads Jose Delgado to Miss Dragotta’s inquiry. Spanish III students Mary Ellen McDonald, Catherine Shaughnessy, Cynthia Gresham and Linda Smythe laugh in sympathy. Do the Can, Always Best Discussions in Mr. Robert Fortier’s new psychology class help students Robert Frank, Raymond Jones, Mary Ann Schulz, and Rita Held to understand them- selves and others. Future threats to the business world, Robert Keagle, Robert Hastie, Frank O’Halloran, John Golden, Joseph Gherardi, and James Gambacorto listen as Andrew Camp explains the new income tax laws. 49 Charles Mizejewski leads a discussion of career opportunities at the Business Club meeting. Taking part in the discussion are Mary Oakerson, Harry Copperthwaite, Kathleen Lyon, Brian Dempsey, and Kathleen Healy. Extra Curricular Sounds from far-off lands intrigue Radio Club members Ward Biondi, John Chrepta, Robert King, and David Noland. 50 Cancelled stamps, garnered after weeks of collecting, are packed off to their mission destina- tions by Lawrence Kenny, Douglas Longo, Martha McNiskin, Margaret Buckley, and Elizabeth Movelle. An exciting French game, Chic Alors, is interrupted as Sister Mary Loretto and club members Judith Wenning, Nicholas Della Volpe, Mary Jane Ryan, and Ralph Cesarano are caught by the camera. Great Minds at work pondering their next moves . . . Thomas Occhiogrosso versus Michael Powers and Gregory Johnson versus Brian O’Connell. Richard Havel, Margaret Sedlak, and Jeffrey Costura anxiously await the outcome. 51 Checking the upcoming tournaments and speech festivals for the year are Patricia Maloney, Mary Anne Munning, Phyllis Feniello, Suzanne Klaver, Frances Tyluki, and Jan Wenning. UNION Fool-proof evidence has been found by the Junior Varsity Debaters—Kevin O’Connor, Susan Bey, Frances Tyluki, Wayne Oldroyd, and Mary Ellen Cody—for their next debate on nuclear weapons. Red Bank Catholic Forensic members—Nicholas Della Volpe, Paul Hencoski, Paula Juska, Carol Jean Jordan, and Presi- dent Patricia Maloney—smile after examining a certificate won by Carol Jean at a local debate tournament at C.B.A. Forensic The price tag on a trophy is hard work. Effort alone is the tool that transforms hours of research on nuclear weapons into a well constructed debate, and a handful of words into a prize-winning speech. Because of this, Forensic is more than a club— it is a personal experience, as it was for Suzanne Klaver when she won first prize in State Dramatic Interpretation and for Patricia Maloney, who won the double ruby, Forensic’s highest award, the diocesan prize for girls’ extemp. Forensic members are well accustomed to library vigils, bumpy bus rides, and the glow of satisfaction that each hard-won trophy reflects. Suzanne Klaver holds her trophy, won in the State Dramatics Interpretation Tournament, before placing it with the other Forensic awards. Varsity Debaters—Lawrence LaPare, Mary Anne Munning, Suzanne Klaver, Patricia Maloney —pose with their moderator, Mr. John Breickner, before leaving for the Cherry Blossom Invitational Tournament at Georgetown University. 53 Go on the It means more than a vacation or a well-hinted-for present from a friend. At Red Bank Catholic Christmas has a special meaning. We trek to class across a snow-covered schoolyard; down in Room 5 a mathematical Christmas tree blooms; carols float through the corridors. “Oh, Come, Let Us Adore Him’’ with Mark Sohl, Margaret McCue, and Patricia Nortz as Michael Fischer lays the Infant in the crib. The Nativity Scene brings to life the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary in the Christmas Assembly. Tell IT Mountain At the Christmas assembly we sing along with the band and Glee Club and pray the Rosary as the spotlight casts shades of gentle blue or rose or lavender on the motionless Nativity scene. Each morning, as we light the Advent wreath, we count the remaining days. And at change of class, as we pass the toyer crib where white lamb and black alike nestle close to the Infant, our prayers of petition are mixed with thanksgiving that here at RBC we have learned to ask not only for the gifts but also for the graces of Christmas. Principals get Christmas stockings, too! Sister Mary receives the students’ gift from Michael Fischer and the Student Council. Santa’s helpers Mary Ellen Cody, Douglas Longo, and Margaret Olsavsky load their “sleigh” with toys for families in the Red Bank area. 55 Seniors dance to the swinging sounds of the Chelseas. Fantasy in Frost Ellen Moller and Richard Maynes look for their friends as they enter “FANTASY IN FROST.” 56 Junior girls compare dresses and good times at the Snowball: Janet Wohlforth, Magda Korczynski, and Marilyn LaRocque. Senior Snowball The echoing laughter of spirited voices and the shuffling of fast-moving feet are the sounds enlivening the cafeteria on Saturday morning as the Seniors begin the great task of preparing an indoor “Fantasy in Frost.” After completing the decorations, they are homeward bound, ready to spend the remaining hours preparing themselves for the big event. All the long hours are rewarded by the marvel of a winter wonderland, the sweet scent of pine trees, and the gleaming splendor of snow covered mountains. Momentarily the gaiety of the night is interrupted as they joyously crown Brian Dempsey and Rita Held king and queen of the '65 Snowball. 57 We wonder what the secret is between Vivian Germane and Thomas Smith. In the Casey Holiday Tournament the Green and Gold downed unbeaten Shore Regional 60-55, en route to a strong second place fin- ish in this annual event. Middletown defeated the Caseys for top honors as Shore Regional placed third. Bob Fraley and Jose Delgado paced the Caseys to two fine, hard-fought victories over Long Branch. Hot shooting by the Green and Gold rolled up high scoring games as the team defeated St. Joseph’s (Tom’s River) 87-47, St. Bonaventure’s 90-44, but lost to rival Red Bank 102-91. Avenging a previous overtime loss to Mater Dei, a fired-up squad defeated the Seraphs 53-51 ; banners, signs, and spirit accompanied the season finale. The future looks bright for Red Bank Catholic’s basketball team as the J.V. squad, playing some of the best teams in the shore, compiled a 13-7 record under Coach Tom Murdock. The freshman team, coached by Mr. Joe Cieri, racked up a 16-2 record, winning 12 in a row. Standouts on the team were Tom McBride, Mike Schulz, John O’Shea, and Frank Kineavy. 58 Jerry Buckalew drives past two Brancher players for a layup and score. Father Christopher Reilly from St. Cath- erine’s, Spring Lake, Girls’ Retreat Master. If Religion Were a Thing That Money Could Buy, the Rich Would Live and the Poor Would Die” The spiritual highlight of the year is the three-day retreat during which we make a self-evaluation from the spiritual point of view. From Father Reilly the girls receive a deeper understanding of the fact that “God loves you,” while the boys draw from Father Hammond “a realization of what you are in the sight of God.” Daily Mass, Confession, Benediction, and private conferences supply nourishment for our spiritual growth. Before returning to the routine of school life, we climax our retreat with a Mass of Thanksgiving. 66 Senior Catherine Shaughnessy enjoys a friendly chat with Father Reilly following a morning conference. “Body of Christ.” “Amen.” Receiving Christ’s body during daily Mass was an essential part of retreat for all. A noontime visit gives Mary Barrett and Michael Truex a chance to think over ideas presented at the morning conference. 67 Senior Boys contemplate Father Hammond’s words during an afternoon conference. wmM We All Get Together on a Saturday Night. Sodalities Through Jesus, life has meaning; through Mary, life has beauty. The Sodalists have as their double aim fostering personal holiness and spreading Christian ideals throughout the world. By sponsoring contests, quizzes, and a book sale during retreat, they encourage interest in vocations and in Catholic literature. The girls’ apostolate also includes the hospitals and orphanages they visit. Casual dances sponsored by both organizations finance an inspiring week for the officers at Fordham’s Summer School of Catholic Action. Through their meetings and spiritual exercises, the Sodalists come to know Mary and her Son. Through their work and activi-ty, they bring this knowledge to others. The efforts of the Sodality truly make our school—and our world— a better place. 88 Freshmen are received into the boys’ Sodality by Father Gall. “A little to the right,” suggests treasurer Mary Adele Meehan to secretary Martha McNiskin as they prepare the Sodality bulletin board. Taking notes from The Common Rules, vice-prefect Margaret Buckley listens as instructor Mary Lee Boese- wetter finds an important precept. Prefect Mary Mullins and Spiritual Director, Father William C. Anderson, dis- cuss the effectiveness of modern liturgical art. Standing: Coach Mr. Joseph Kristofik, Manager Robert Alchus, David Clark, Donald Esposito, Jose Delgado, Michael Ferguson, Charles Cook, Thomas Loewenstine, Gerald Horn, Gerald Buckalew, and Manager Leon Genciana. Red Bank Catholic’s new head coach, Mr. Joseph Kristofik, is optomistic about this year’s team. The Caseys have the benefit of six returning lettermen and the best players from last year’s good J.V. team. This year’s team has power in the persons of Jose Delgado, Charles Cook, and Michael Ferguson; speed, with Doug Hillman, Hector Delgado, and Jerry Horn, and experienced pitching with Jerry Buckalew and Doug Longo returning from last year and Don Esposito and Jim Lambertson, the new moundsmen. With a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work, this year’s team will go all the way to the Parochial A Champion- ship. Team Captain Doug Longo digs in and waits for his pitch against Mater Dei High School. 90 The sure arm of third sacker Jim Lambertson throws out a would-be baserunner from St. Joseph’s, Toms River. Thomas Loewenstine rounds first base as he delivers a clutch pinch hit single in the Mater Dei game. Sophomore Rick Geiger strokes a double to deep left center during the Mater Dei game. This was one of two hits he collected that day. Varsity Baseball Hector Delgado takes second base on a futile attempt to throw out a runner at home plate. Senior Charlie Cook stretches to take Doug Hillman’s throw, nabbing the runner by a good margin. 91 Jerry Buckalew puts down a perfect bunt, good for a base hit and a run against St. Joseph’s. Always quick to take advantage, Jerry Horn watches for a possible extra base against Rumson. Boys’ Track and Field The 1965 boys’ track team, after three previous seasons, has a well balanced attack, and they have proven that it is a team to be feared in the shore area. The distance runners are rated as one of the team’s strong sections. Runners John Mautner, Bob Byron, John and Brian Dempsey, and Harry Copperthwaite give the team an immediate edge in points, many times sweep- ing these events 1,2, 3. The sprints have sure point-getters in James Smith and John Mas- setti. The field events have two school rec- ord holders in Charles Mayer for the shot put and Peter Armstrong for the javelin. The team has enough strength to be a real contender in the shore -and enough youth to continue its winning ways for many years to come. Mark Sohl shows his versatility by his throw of the javelin against Shore Regional High School. Bernie Keigher clears the bar at nine feet with a lot to spare against St. Rose and St. Joseph’s of Tom River. Charles Mayer, Casey record holder for the shot put, throws the shot 48 feet plus, in the St. Rose and St. Joseph’s tri-meet. The throw was good for first place honors. 95 Thomas Ryan puts his best foot forward in the broad jump against Shore Regional. Not Pictured: James Martin. CLASS OF 1966 As juniors, led by Dennis O’Keefe, we learn to overcome new obstacles: the pungent reek of the chemistry lab, the tension which fills a room during a College Boards test, an ad drive challenge from the homeroom next door. We reach the peak of our social life with the long-awaited Junior Prom, when we transform the familiar cafeteria into the medieval atmosphere of “A Night in Camelot.” Magda Korczynski and James Martin reign as king and queen. Finally the day arrives when we receive the symbol of lasting loyalty to RBC— our emerald-and-gold senior class rings. With Peter Eagan as our spokesman we hold a prominent position on the Student Council. Exploring fields new to underclassmen, we pioneer in chemistry and speech classes. During football and basketball games the players we cheer on to victory are our own. Is a sophomore really a wise fool? Yes! We learn this is so true as we find ourselves too wise to believe that our school has an elevator yet too foolish to talk our way out THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING A PRESIDENT includes cleaning . ... up after lunch. Our first glimpse of high school life is— gingerly peering into a Math I book, edging our way through seething corridors, listening to exotic sounds. So this is French! The Signpost drive presents our first challenge, and we no longer feel like probationary Caseys. Next we become dynamic politicians and elect cast-clad Thomas McBride president. At our first pep rally we re-fuel the Casey Express and send it on its way with a deafening, “All Aboard!” Through all of these things We gradually develop that certain feeling which flourishes throughout Red Bank Catholic— the feeling of belonging.
