Listen, all ye people of Rector, to the word of wisdom from the lips of your prophet, who now spcaketh unto you what hath been revealed unto her, even as it hath been decreed by the powers that be. gg Knowest thou not that a glance into the future is- never a pleasure unmixed with pain? Doesn't thou know aspiring youth that to know what the future holds may be to thee but a never ending curse, shutting thyself out from the joys of the present in the contemplation of things that are to come? Listen, and it shall be prophesied unto thee. Ah, thirty, forty years hence I see a rich man-a banker-riding in his air- plane, counting his money--wearing his diamonds-who is it? His name? Oh yes, I see now-Tommy Landis. Now I feel so strong, so brave, so bold! A woman of strong mind, strong will, and stronger temper! A lecturer on a strong subject - an old maid demon- strating her independence of man. Her name escapes me-wait-ah yes, it is Bet- ty Johnson. Ah, the dainty lady of society, envied and flattered by all, the queen of ev- ery gathering, the belle of every ball - Geraldine Eaton. Now I see a school of learning and a noble professor before his class. They look at him in reverence of the vast learning he acquired at Rector High School. Why, what is that they call hiil as they bow in homage before him? Professor George French. Ah, I feel like crying. I must cry-I must-this woman's grief overwhelms me. Surely, it is some lowly widow, mourning her husband. No, not so. I see nothing like that! 'Tis only a fair bride weeping the loss of her pet poodle. Who is the bride? Her name was once-what? Sue Long. I hear applauding, loud applauding! lt greets the man taking a seat by the window. He looks familiar and yet not quite familiar enough. I can't tell who he is. Ah, he waves his hands around excitedly. Now I know who he is. It's Kenneth King and he is a weatherman. It was he who furnished the splendid weather for the Rector people, and that is why he was so wildly applauded. My, my look at all the money. Who possesses all these greenbacks? Mack Walker the famous inventor - He invented Restwell mattresses for oyster beds, Boomerang collar buttons guaranteed to return to the hand that loses them and exercises for reducing one's income tax. Ah, I see in the distant years, still looking as young as ever, a famous modiste, whose shop on Main Street in Rector is the last word in style and expense. With a strip of velvet here and a drop of sealing wax there and two chicken feathers added she calls it a hat and sells it for twice what it is worth. Yes, you guessed it - Ruth Deniston. I see a policeman. No! I believe it's a policewoman. Yet, it's Joan McCord and she has done more to secure law and order in her district than any ten men and is a credit to Rector. My next case is interesting. It's a diver's suite of steel and an oxygen tank. This is worn by Donald Collier the well-known deep sea diver. There's a great dent in the helmet. It was caused by a blow from a whale. This is a strange one. I see a room full of girls, surrounding a teacher. This teacher is Syveda Barker and she is teaching them on the subject of flirtation. Well, we might have known she'd pass her ability on to others. Next I see a nursery, no! I guess it's a schoolroom. My goodnessl It's some poor housewife and it looks as if she's giving a party. Everywhere I look I see Brats. Ohl no - Oh, my, my-What I now see is only Mary McCuney's fam- ily. She is now the mother of 26 Darling Little Demons. I see two people exchanging confidences over a patient. Even in their work as old maid nurses, Inez Gardner and Earlene Eaton who were so inseparable in school, could neverbe divided. The mist closes down. It rises, the scene changes. I hear tinkling guitars and the surf breaking on a coral strand. I see the bright-hued blossoms and tall palm trees. Happy brown-skinned people are singing plain melodies. It is Hawaii. I see a young woman in a grass skirt dancing, Melba jean Griffith. Ah, she displays quite a figure. I see a huge truck coming down the street of Rector and pauses at Bill's Cafe-a man delivered a rack of milk bottles and drives ondown the street. I see Buford Simpson owner of a large dairy. Now I see a ship in danger. The paint is still wet on the lifeboats and they cannot be used. Lindell Taylor is the captain of this ship. There is a gleaming light - a lighthouse. In the door stands Nell Whitaker, the keeper of the light. She holds up a huge sign reading: Back in carefully and do not waken the whales. What would Lindell do in his wrecked ship without Nell's light? What's this? No-it can't be-I can't believe my ears, but yet, here it is as plain as can be. I hear speeches and guess who is giving them. David Clopton. He is a splendid example of perfect self-control. He never stutters or stammers, never hesitates for a word, has no complexes and no bad habits. He's showing some fine talent in the Dramatics he acquired at Rector high. Louise Walter is the sixtieth President of the United States. Elected by the Independent Party. Active in politics since infancy. Mayor of her town three terms, U. S. Senator two years, speaker of the National House of Representatives one term. Sponsored the bills for disfranchising Saxaphone players, radio croon- ers, and talkative fishermen. Ah, yes, she has hit the hall of fame at last. Hmmmmm. I smell something cooking. It's the cooking of Louise Jack- son. She is the happy wife of a prominent business man with the nicest home and the best meals in town. In addition to that, she is a lecturer on homemak- ing-the kind who tells people, over the radio, how to build a front porch out of packing boxes and how to then feed a family seven days on twenty-three cents apiece. Her husband, Jackie Parish, becomes bored and elopes with Belva Nelson, a cashier in a Tea Shop. Ah, do my ears deceive me? l hear beautiful singing. It's Ottie Shockley and he is. a very successful song writer. He has only one competitor which is Rosa Lee Hardin. He writes popular music such as Way back in the Hills and she writes more on the classical style such as Life Gets Tedious don't it? What's this? I see a darkened stage and in the spotlight appears a dainty figure. It's Mildred Gordon kissing her hand to the audience as an attendant arranges a rope across the stage. Why, she's a tight rope walker in a circus. Ah! Who do we have here? just one of the students who joined the Navy to see the world through a porthole. He is so ambitious, he'll probably be an Admiral by the time the fleet gets to Manila. Why of course! It's Benny Row- lett. Well, what do I see now? I marvel at its contents. A red handkerchief, a huge black hat turned up in front bearing a skull and cross bones. Yes! These are the possessions of jettye Winstead, better known as Vicious Blondie, the pirate. Sally Ennis is a wealthy cosmetician, proprietor of Ye Beautifier shop-Alter- ations while you wait, people - men as well as women - will enter looking like eighty and emerge looking like sixteen. She is the most famous skin remodeler and face lifter in all the world. I see a newsboy running down the street! What is he saying? Listen, I catch it now- Extra, Extra, -read all about the big battle. Billy Ray Williams who was imprisoned for murder tries to escape. Now I see an immense billboard and what does it say? A second Judy Canova, greatest opera singer of the day-Peggy Yancey. Well, we see her voice has improved. A strong breeze and a whiff of far, far prairies. A girl of the plains - a pioneer of distant wildness and vastness - riding bareback over the broad spaces. Carolyn Futrell. A stolid, slow moving chap, who will never display either speed or animation. He has found his proper position in life early. Who else would it he but john Barker, owner and proprietor of Barker's Pool Hall at Kennett, Missouri. Q I hear a' good strong voice. She must have been loud in High School. Her future is clear. Ten years from now your favorite motion picture cathedral will be displaying huge signs announcing, Vera Mae Morris, America's Girl Friend in Cinderella's Sandals. Miss Morris talks, sings, dances, and plays three musical instruments, including a vacuum cleaner. Don't Miss It. Now I see joe Outland in a great age of endurance contests. He has become the champion of champions by simply making up his mind that he wants to do something and doing it. He is America's Greatest Champion Baby Sitter. The mist is clearing. A village scene appears. I see a church. The bells are ringing. It is Sunday morning and the people are coming to the service. I see the minister - Well, what do you know, it's Kenneth Melrose, a fine looking man now, and by his side walks his wife. Her face is turned away, but I can see it is someone we know. Now she turns. I can see her face. Ah, yes. just as I thought it's Lura May King and she looks very happy as Kenneth's wife. And now the sun sets and the light fades gradually. A purple haze covers everything. The crystal clouds and I can see no more. Henry Insurance Agency Fire and Casualty Insurance Telephone 129 Boosting the School Rector Bakery Chester Ahlf, Prop.
