The Contrast has real meaning to the pupil as he meets new situations. new people. and new ways of doing things. Our school ollers to the freshman and sophom new freedoms and new responsibilities. Now more than iycr hilioic tht pupil is n hi cwnu yhich 1 n im . -t s -t - s o si' y 'sa flfV portant part of the process of growing up. A hoy or girl can now decide on how much time to spend in the prep- aration ol' a subject. He or she has choices to make. with the help ol' parents and advisers. in the selection ol' courses. Each course is designed to prepare the student . , ,. . . ., . , lor tl spf t ilu purpost. sum h as going' to eollege. entering P Ad' ,ui 'K 1' A6 'ar' the husiness world. or mastering a skilled trade. There are also choices to make in alter-school activi- ties. All students are urged to take part in some ol' Reavis' many activities. The underclassman will lind that a great deal of his time will he spent on the hasic things that eyeryone should learn in order to get along well in today's world. These things are included in required suhjects which every student must take. In addition to these fundamentals, Reayis olliers the young pupil a wide variety of suhjects from which to choose. In his later high school years he will haye more lreedom in selecting the subjects he will take depending on his interests. abilities. and course ol' study. Looking into our spacious library our students find a large assortment of standard references. current magazines. newspapers. and books kept in order by Mr. Erbes and the Library Council. As the central source of curricular materials both for pupils and teachers. it would be impossible to run the library and give satisfactory service without the help of the guys and dolls who belong to the Council. Their many duties in- clude placing returned books on the shelves. checking them as they are re- turned. charging them, getting materials and books from the shelves. filing charging slips, book mending, and assisting with library housekeeping. Forty-seven members, each of whom devotes at least one hour every day to library work. belong to this service organization which had its beginnings back in 1950 when our school first opened its doors. gf..- with Qu UXN gi ANIERIC.-KN JUNIOR RED CROSS Front, Left fo Right: B. Once again Reavis' varsity wrestling team turned in a most commendable season's record which this school year listed as a total of 19 wins, four losses, and one tie. The Rams as a team were hard hit by graduation the previous June, and they had only three returning regulars on the first team of twelve. Considerable speculation arose in some quarters that Reavis would have only a mediocre team and was ready for defeat. but this proved to be entirely false as the Rams had their Hnest year. For the first time in three years Oak Lawn was deprived of the Southwest Suburban Conference champion- ship, and Reavis became the first school to win both the frosh-soph and varsity cham- pionship in wrestling at the same time. For the second straight year our school was the state sectional headquarters for championship wrestling. This year the Blue and VVhite took the state silver trophy for sefond place behind Proviso who went on to take the state championship a week later. Reavis' matmen won over 53 medals from the second place state championship to frosh-soph conference ribbons for individual championships. Four trophies were placed in the showcase: one for the Invitational Championship. another for the varsity conference championship. a third for the frosh-soph conference title. and a silver placque for the second place state sectional championship. Individual honors went to Bob O'Connor. junior. who was elected outstanding wrestler of the year. Kfnvztinueri on page 6-U Page 62 l'NlIHlf Roll. Leif! ffl Right: XI.lttl-l'.l, ll, Roiimki. Kluch has happened during those fleeting years, The purposes of a high school education are now clear to the student. Standing on the threshold ol adulthood. the pupil finds that a secondary education has prepared him for his future occupation. Whether it be a guy or a every person has to make a living. either by running a household. by working for someone else. or by managing a business. In addition to preparing for the right occupation. a student learns how to work and get along with other people. He learns how to better express himself in speech and writing. He realizes the need for the knowledge of simple mathematics for everyday needs. Being a good citizen is important to the future of any young person. Guys and dolls are quick to realize that our country is only as strong as each one of its citizens. Therefore. while at Reayis. they learn about how our government works. A -tudent comes to under- stand why certain laws are important to protect in- dividual frecdom. He realizes he must take his share of the responsibility in his community and nation. The young person during his high school years be- came interested in many different activities. These activi- ties provided new experiences which will enrich his life and make him a happier person.
