REASONER got underway for WESTPAC on l September 1982 a few minutes early, The ship set the precedent on that first day of the cruise of meeting all commitments on time, and never faltered during the next 241 days and over 51,000 miles of steaming. That admirable record was possible only due to the skill, dedication and hard work of the crew prior to and during deployment. The ship got off to a fast start by participating in two major exercises prior to our first WESTPAC port visit at Subic Bay, Republic of Philippines. The crew completed the transition into a tight knit team during the next month which included visits to Subic Bay, Singapore and a repair period at Diego Garcia. After Battle Group operations in the North Arabian Sea and a brief visit to Mombasa, Kenya we embarked on one of our biggest challenges of the deployment - a 54 day at sea period. The crew demonstrated remarkable dedication and innovation during this period in all areas of the shipboard environment -including watchstanding, maintenance, repairs and morale which resulted in a well deserved reputation for self-sufficiency. Perhaps our proudest moment of the deployment was 20 January 1983 when we arrived in Geraldton, West Australia for a port visit. The arrival in Geraldton culminated a long, highly successful period at sea with the ship's appearance being second to none in the U. S. Navy. It was an all hands effort that was a demonstration of the crew's pride in their country, the U. S. Navy, REASONER, and themselves. After further Battle Group operations and special operations REASONER returned to Subic Bay, for a much needed two week period of repairs and relaxation in mid February. This was the first time we were able to go cold iron since prior to departing San Diego 5 lf 2 months earlier. The scope of maintenance and repairs accomplished was awesome. At the same time there was ample opportunity to enjoy some well-deserved rest and recreation. b The months of March and April found REASON ER operating in the Northern latitudes and experiencing our first cold weather and heavy seas of the deployment. Again, all our missions were accomplished on time and most importantly, in a safe manner. REASONER participated in one of the largest fleet exercises in recent years in April 1983. Our deployment came to an end on 29 April 1983 with our return to San Diego and the reunions with families and friends. We can all be proud of our-service to our country during this deployment. We repeatedly demonstrated professionalism, stamina and dedication while successfully completing each assigned task - and that's what its all about. CDR USN A Commanding Officer 90 E
