C0 AR D71 USN COMMANDIN G OFFICER, USS REASONER IFF-10632 Commander Arndt was born in Seattle, Washington and attended schools in Richland, Washington. He is a graduate of Washington State University and was commissioned an Ensign in June 1965 upon completion of Naval Officer Candidate School. He was promoted to Commander in June 1980. Commander Arndt's initial assignment was the amphibious ship USS TORTUGA ILSD-261 in which he served as Communications officer. His next tour of duty was an Officer-in Charge of a PCF lSwift Boatl in Vietnam, from June 1967 to June 1968. Commander Arndt then served on the Staff of Commandant, Eleventh Naval District in San Diego prior to attending Destroyer School, Newport, Rhode lsland in 1970. Upon graduation from Destroyer School, he served as Operations Officer in the destroyer USS HANSON lDD-832l. Following an assignment as Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Center, Vallejo, California in 1972 he was ordered to Headquarters, Navy Recruiting Area Eight in San Francisco. Commander Arndt graduated with highest distinction from the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island in July 1976 and then served as Flag Secretary and Aide to Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group ONE. Upon completing an assignment as Executive Officer, USS STEIN IFF-1065l in December 1979, served as Commanding Officer, Navy Recruiting District, Columbus, Ohio. He assumed command of USS REA- SONER in September, 1982 ln addition to service and campaign ribbons, Commander Arndt has been award- ed the Bronze Star with Combat V , the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V and gold star in lieu of second award and the Purple Heart. Qigrf PENIX, USN EXECUTIVE OFFICER USS REASONER I FF 1063 Lieutenant Commander L.E. Penix was born in Canton, Ohio. He obtained his elementary and secondary education in the Perry School District, Canton, Ohio, graduating in 1967. In the fall of 1967 he enrolled at The Ohio State University and was a member of the NROTC program. While a senior he was married to the former Susan Ann Waldick also of Canton. Upon graduation in the fall of 1971, he received his commission as an Ensign. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in June 1980. Lieutenant Commander Penixls initial assignment was the destroyer USS HENDERSON KDD-7851 in which he served as First Lieutenant, Gunnery, and Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer. His next assignment was to Newport, Rhode Island where he attended Department Head School. Lieutenant Commander Penix was then assigned a tour as Weapons Officer in the Frigate USS BAGLEY in July 1975. A split tour to the amphibious ship USS TUSCALOOSA QLST- 1187l as Engineering Officer, then ensued until June of 1979. During this tour of duty the first of two daughters, Kristen Ann, was born in September 1978. In September 1979 Lieutenant Commander Penix was enrolled in the weapon systems engineering curriculum at Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey Cali- fornia, and in June 1982 received a Masters of Science in Engineering Science. While attending N.P.S. a second daughter Michelle Denise was born. He relieved as Executive Officer of USS REASONER KFF-10631 in October 1982. MMA D RLE
