Four years ago I peered down a long, dark corridor Wondering what the darkness hid. Despite my nervousness, I knew there was only one way to find out. I took my first step. Slowly, as I walked on, The corridor lit up To reveal hidden alcoves holding treasures, Some of which I took, And put into my pockets. And when the lights weren’t bright enough, I’d reach into my pocket, Pulling out a gem or two, Collected there like lint, And a radiant light would shine To guide me through the darkness Into a brighter spot. Now, I reach the corner. I look back down the corridor, The one that took four too-short years to travel, The one that seemed to go on forever, And I smile at the brightness of it, And I cry that I am at the end. At last I turn, not wanting to move on, Knowing that I must. And again I peer ahead Into a long, dark corridor. Where will it take me? Will it hurt? Do I dare? I reach into my pockets, Touch the gems collected there. I smile, reassured, And walk on. ■Laurie McMillan
