As the class of 1986 prepared to enter a new phase in life, four members of the RMHS faculty announced their decisions to do likewise. Retirng this year are Leonard D ' Orlando, Ernest Spence, Virginia Bartlett, and James Roth. Leonard D ' Orlando Principal Virginia Bartlett Physical Education After twenty years as a classroom teacher and assistant principal, -Mr. D ' Orlando rose to the position of principal in 1978. At that time he stressed what would be the theme of his administration, excellence in education. Since then Mr. D. has striven to make Ernest Spence Coordinator of Data Processing Mr. James Roth Director of Music RMHS one of the best schools in the country. Last year his efforts were rewarded when Reading High qualified for the final round in a national competi¬ tion to recognize the best school in the nation. A simple thank you will nver express the appreciation of all that has been done by Mr. D ' Orlando, who in commenting on his retirement stated, It is now time to move on. As classroom teacher, Assistant Principal, and finally Coordinater of Data Processing Mr. Spence has con¬ tributed to the education of Reading youth for thirty-five years. In that time he has touched the hearts of one and all. I think that it is time for me to take some new directions, said Mr. Spence. I thank you for my enriching ex¬ periences with you and your families. It will be difficult leaving the school atmosophere, but I am looking forward to new adventures. Reflecting on her twenty-eight year adventure at Reading High, Miss Bartlett remarked, The best part has always been the young people and seeing them grow. It is the reason I chose to become a teacher. During her time as physical education instructer Miss Bartlett has worked diligently on behalf of the RMHS curri¬ culum and extra-curricular activities, especially the elevation and recognition of girls athletics. She was the first field hockey coach and instituted the aerobic and advance dance activities. Mr. James Roth also decided to retire this year. From the start of his teaching career in 1957 Mr. Roth instructed RMHS students in Music Theory and served as the director of both the Marching Band and the Glee Club. During that time the annual musical and other presentations were enhanced by his leadership. In 1982 Mr. Roth took on the responsibi¬ lities of Music Director for the town, the position from which he now retires. The staff of Pioneer and the entire RMHS community wish a happy and healthy to all.

Special Thanks Jane Darveau Guidance Counselor Rena Mirkin Director of Guidance The class of 1986 would like to remember two outstanding guidance counselors. Mrs. Jane Darveau and Mrs. Rena Mirkin deserve special thanks for their many contributions to our class. Their guidance and support through the years proved to be an invaluable asset, especially dur¬ ing our frenzied senior year. The time and effort spent by Mrs. Darveau writing college recommendations and helping those students who planned to enter the working world after high school was much appreci¬ ated. And the help from Mrs. Mirkin did not go unnoticed. It takes a very special person to devote so much time to so many students, and our class was fortu¬ nate for having two very special people to guide us through RMHS. Thank you Mrs. Darveau and Mrs. Mirkin for everything! b
