D ' ORLANDO Our class did not know Mr. D ' Orlando as an educator, but in the past four years many of us have met this man as an assistant principal and, finally, in 1978 he became Leonard D ' Orlando, principal. Ordinarily the title of a person is irrelevant, for it is the man and not the job to whom we are attracted. This principle remains: Mr. D ' Orlando does, indeed, maintain an excellent rapport with a great number of our class. And yet we must look beyond our friendship with the man and see the professional. In the short time since he has been principal, Mr. D ' Orlando has initiated several programs and acted upon many ideas to help make R.M.H.S. a better place to be. He has been more-than-successful and kept his visibility. We would like to thank our principal by dedicating Pioneer 1979 to Leonard D ' Or¬ lando. 4 KENNETH J. FEIT DEDICATION Occasionally, just at the point when school seems incredibly dull and life amaz¬ ingly complex, someone steps in, points out alternatives, provides understanding, and promises hope. Kenneth Feit has been that person to many students at R.M.H.S. The inspiration found daily in his class, the time given to comment in each student ' s journal, the conversations he held often with individuals: these aspects of his character struck up an interest in Mr. Feit as a person, an interest which carried over into a concern about what he had to say, for Ken Feit does indeed have much to say. His knowledge of the language and of literature is obvious, but it is the way in which he presents this knowledge that is truly special. Every point is related to life experiences, and because of his own travels, Mr. Feit has no trouble showing this to his classes. It is not only in the academic world that Ken Feit has been influential. Athletics are important to him also. He is the person responsible for the R.M.H.S. Outing Club, and he has aided many athletes by coaching Spring Track. Kenneth Feit has, in various ways, given a great deal of himself to many mem¬ bers of our class. We thank him and proudly dedicate our yearbook to him, his ideals, and the impact he has had on us as individuals. 5 When, lo, as they reached the mi A wondrous portal opened wide, As if a cavern‘was suddenly hi And the Piper advanced and the children followed. Education realistically involves the excitement and pain of growing to meet new challenges, of learning to cope with new ideas as well as new problems. This past year the Senior Class and R.M.H.S. as an entity were subjected to the concept of death through the loss of two of our classmates, Sean Boyd and David Beers. For those of us who knew Sean and David, the loss is virtually unbelievable. Shock, anger, depression, fear and pity were among the emotions that suddenly became real to many of us. Both of these students possessed integrity, persistence, intelligence and friendliness in a special, unique combination. Each individual left an image firmly implanted in the minds of those who knew him. Friends and acquaintances have dealt with each loss in a variety of ways, but the vast majority of those involved have been forced to search within themselves to find some truth in life, realizing that none of us are as invincible as we once may have thought. Sean Boyd and David Beers deeply touched the lives of all who knew them, and as time passes our memories of them shall be all the more cherished. 164 r 165 166 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS AND ADVISOR It is difficult for me to put into a few words how much I have enjoyed working with this class for the past two years. All of you have made my first years of teaching memorable ones. We have experienced alot together. We have had very happy times from pumpkining to Senior Talent Night and we have had very sad times with the loss of dear friends — experiences we shall not forget. The Class of ' 79 will certainly be remembered! You have contri¬ buted to the RMHS Community in every possible way— in Athletics, Academics, the Arts not forgetting all the services so many of you have unselfishly volunteered. Now it is time to move on and to con¬ tinue your achievements beyond RMHS. My best wishes to all of you for a successful and productive life. Thank you for allowing me to share your senior year with you. Love, P.S. I ' ll miss you!!! 167 168 A.F.S. — JAPAN KATHY KELLIHER Until last December, Japan to me was, as the saying goes, nothing more than a paragraph in the encyclopedia. But by February, only two months later, Japan had become my home . . . and my A.F.S. experience had begun. The beginning was hard, but then good things always take time. Neither of my two younger sisters or my Mom understood any English, so the first few weeks were quiet. We learned through necessity (and through lack of a dictionary) to become excellent pantomime artists. It was fun; an A.F.S. experience , despite the expected problems, and we learned to ap¬ preciate things even when we couldn ' t understand. And so I gained my first impressions of Japan in a very special way: through seeing, experiencing and participating. My Japan was Yotsukaido-machi, a small town located between the rice paddies and peanut fields of Chiba, two hours south-east of Tokyo. Because my town was so small, life seemed to move more slowly than here in Reading. People had time and they wanted to share that time and a part of their lives with me. We spent the year listening and trying to understand each other. Apart from the usual subjects in school, I also studied flower arrangement and Japanese Calligraphy, chorus, cooking and ping-pong. It was during these extra-curricular activities I found the Japan that I eventually learned to love so much. They taught me about Japan and helped me to become Japanese for a year. They gave me a part of the history that is Japan. The world is such a large place that it becomes unrealistic to hope that we can be unified as one person. But then, the cultures that make up this world today are so special that, if it means sacrificing them for unity, we should be satisfied to keep separate. Perhaps instead we should strive to appreciate, to learn how to care for and understand other cultures as well as our own. Let us grow together in purpose and create a world full of people caring for people. Walk together, talk together, all ye peoples of the earth. Then, and only then, shall we have peace . . . 169 ( a e (S wo Once upon a time there were two magnifi¬ cent kingdoms, one ruled by King Arthur and the other by King Willard. After two long years of sporadic rumbling, the two king¬ doms were uprooted from their hamlets and thrown together by some existential force. They were merged in a land larger than ei¬ ther of their own, a confusing and unfamiliar territory populated by beings known as up¬ perclassmen. While having to learn to live with each other, the people from the two kingdoms also had to put up with the jeers and harassments from the older, conceited creatures. The upperclassmen were not the only problems the former Willard and Arthur people had to confront. A lot of the popula¬ tion was not willing to abandon its feeling of pre-alliance loyalty, and minor skirmishes broke out as a result. The pre-merger senti¬ ment seemingly brainwashed into the minds of some, persisted for several years in some cases. In spite of the struggle for some type of unified identity, leaders for the first year were elected in the fall of 1975. Timothy Hunt was chosen by the populace as the new nation ' s first Premier; Trisha DeSisto was elected to be the Right Hand Man (actually, woman) to the Premier; Christina Barrett was chosen as Scribe; and Peter MacDonald was elected as Person in Charge of Financial Endeavors. Both former kingdoms were rep¬ resented equally in this election, demonstrat¬ ing the great diversity existing in this fledg¬ ling nation. 170 The main problems these officers and the of¬ ficers elected in the following years faced was to find a way of uniting the battling masses. In the second year of the new nation, under the lead¬ ership of Mimi Fallon, Jill Pirie, Ellen Petkewich and Debbie Blacker, things began to fall into place. Through successful, organized events such as bake sales, dances and car washes, the kingdom gradually began to function as one. The two sides were tiring of defending their former schools of thought, and time was instead devoted to heightening levels of intellectual su¬ periority — to increase the nations chance of eventually sending ambassadors to even larger foreign countries. The individual began to gain support for his own ideas rather than those of the group he formerly represented. The young nation was maturing rapidly. As the country entered its third year of exis¬ tence, the situation improved. Each new event for the benefit of the nation was an outstanding success, the economic situation was good, and virtually all objectives of the nation were being met. It was a time of unequaled happiness and bliss. To add to the nation ' s surge of power, a delegate from the League of Nations, the re¬ nowned Melanie Guzelian, was sent to further supplement the nation ' s level of intellectual su¬ periority. Nothing could stop them now . . . Onward and upward the kingdom went. A buffet, a car wash, a dance, and then a day of flowers — all masterminded by reigning officers Cathy Ohala, Joan DiGiovanni, Jill Pirie and Lynn Rigazio — pushed the kingdom into virtu¬ ally unheard of riches. The third year was climaxed by a gala prom which a majority of the population attended, acting as one rather than two distinct entities. The days of Arthur and Wil¬ lard existed only as memories. As the fourth year of existence approached. Premier Cathy Ohala accepted the torch of leadership from the last of the original inhabi¬ tants of the now-familiar region. She was re¬ elected shortly afterward, with Joan DiGiovanni, Lynn Rigazio and Lisa Buckley also chosen to serve in a year filled with dances, dinners, car¬ nations and celebrations. This would certainly be the most powerful year of them all. 171 Can you imagine us years from today sharing a park bench quietly? How terribly strange to be seventy. Old friends, Memory brushes the same years Silently sharing the same fears . . . . — Paul Simon down this road, the s ' that it ' s only begun. . . stories you thought never Dave Mason Maybe it ' s the time of year, Yes, and maybe it ' s the time of man But I ' ve come to my conclusion: Life is for learning. — Joni Mitchell 172 He who walks in another ' s tracks leaves no footprints. — Joan Brannon No limits are set to the ascent of man, and the loftiest precincts are open to all. In this, your choice alone is supreme. — Hasidii proverb Allons! We must not stop here! However sweet these laid-up stores — however convenient this dwelling, we cannot remain here; However sheltered this port, and however calm these waters, we must not anchor here; However welcome the hospitality that surrounds us, we are permitted to receive it but a little while. Allons! The inducements shall be greater; We will sail pathless and wild seas. — Walt Whitman 173 r A SPECIAL THANKS TO THOSE SPONSORS WHO HAVE HELPED MAKE THIS YEARBOOK A REALITY y r CRYSTAL DRIVING SCHOOL 444 MAIN STREET, WAKEFIELD, MASS.
