Energy plus en¬ thusiasm rolled up in a whirlwind of activity. Just look at her list of credits. First, examine her extra-curricular activities. Last year Ms. Sellers was advisor for the Student Union and helped it im¬ mensely in its transition to this year ' s Student Council which she also advises. For the past three years she has co-directed and directed the Model U.N. with enough organization that anyone watching might think it was the real U.N. in session. She has been the Girls Spring Track coach for the past three years and has also been the overseer for the Student Advisory Council these last two years. Her efforts in that capacity have helped them bring about changes in the school. Ms. Sellers is no less intense about her in-school work. She teaches Modem Dance, one of the Physical Education elec¬ tives, with at least the zeal she has for her Social Studies clas¬ ses. Likewise, her Social Studies classes are taught with so much enthusiasm that her energy becomes infectious and the students acquire part of her interest in the subject. Listen to her walk. That ' s the walk of someone who is al¬ ways busy. But it ' s a walk, not a run. It ' s very easy to talk to Ms. Sellers for she, without a moment ' s hesitation, will stop and listen. With all this in mind, the Class of 77 proudly dedicates our yearbook to Susan Sellers. 5 When I was young my teachers were the old I gave up fire for form till I was cold. I suffered like a metal being cast. I went to school to age to learn the past. Now I am old my teachers are the young. What can ' t be molded must be cracked and sprung I strain at lessons fit to start a suture. I go to school to youth to learn the future. — Robert Frost M 1 ««• «? ADMINISTRATION ARA A. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE Else Hemar Andrea Knapp AFS 1976-1977 AFS 1976 Norway to the U.S. Turkey The easiest way to describe my year here in Reading is to say that it has been fantastic! When I left Norway late in August, I had no idea of what I was coming to, and I have to admit that it was a scary feeling. Thanks to many people, I soon found that there was nothing to worry about. I ' ve had the greatest time. During these months I ' ve learned a lot about the American people and their culture. I have also learned more about my own country ' s culture, and I can see its advantages and disadvantages. I hope that I have helped spread knowledge about Norway. I want to thank everybody who took part in making this year possible for me; the people in Reading, everyone at the high school, and especially my fantas¬ tic family — the Joneses, who have had to put up with me for ten months. I hope they enjoyed my stay as much as I did. I wish that everybody could have the same experi¬ ence as I have had. I feel that this year has changed my life in a positive way. The only sad thing is that time went by so qucikly. A.F.S. is a terrific organization, and I want to leave you with one of the A.F.S. sayings: Walk together, talk together all ye people of the earth, for then and only then shall ye live in peace. EL cl Eonoor Living with people whose life style is totally differ¬ ent from anything I was accustomed to proved to be more difficult than I had imagined. For a short time, my Turkish family went out of their way to make sure that I was enjoying myself. However, their efforts didn ' t last too long and soon my family was going about their everyday routine as if I wasn ' t there. Quickly I began to understand that I would have to take the initiative if the summer was going to amount to anything. Trying to learn and communicate with the Turkish language was my first major undertaking; few people spoke English. In America I was used to doing everything quickly, but in Turkey the weather is extremely hot and people take their time. (My sister used to get upset with me because I walked too fast.) Nobody cares how long a job takes and I had to adjust to this slower pace. As I got used to the Turkish life-style and became more familiar with the language, my summer became more enjoyable. I was soon accepted as a member of the family and my Turkish parents let me do most, of the things my sister did. I really felt I belonged the first day they let me scrub the floor! A.F.S. did not promise that every minute of my ten-week stay would be exciting. At times I was frus¬ trated and bored but that was part of the whole experi¬ ence. A.F.S. gives people the chance to learn about other cultures. I left Turkey with a better understand¬ ing of people and their needs. With help from my Turkish family, I was able to ad¬ just to their everyday life and culture. I believe that is what A.F.S. is all about. And now they answer his summoning blast With an ever vaguer and vaguer stir. Or at utmost a little reluctant whirl That drops them no further than where they were. I only hope that when I am free. Homerun! I wish I were an Oscar Meyer wiener. 97 Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry 1 could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if 1 should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by. SENIOR CLASS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Row 1: Jackie Meuse, David Clements, Thomas Haberman, Matt Sorenson, Kathy Fraser. Row 2: Kathy Mullins, Scott Dugan, Nancy Teel, Michael Moscariello, Sharon Bassett, Donna Ricci. 172 CLASS ADVISOR . . . Miss Lanouette As the Class of ' 77 prepares to leave RMHS and I pre¬ pare to return to a life of leisure and normality, I would like to offer a few parting thoughts as one of my last official acts. I have to say it ' s been a great experience for me. To be sure we ' ve had our ups and downs, successes and fail¬ ures, but through it all we ' ve learned a valuable lesson: it ' s better to share experiences than to go it alone. Shared failures don ' t seem as bad and shared successes are absolutely euphoric. On a more personal level, being class advisor has al¬ lowed me to take a part in students lives that few teach¬ ers get a chance to take — a shoulder to cry on, a con¬ fidante, a friend. It fulfilled a desire 1 had to be other than Miss Lanouette, Latin teacher. I admit to having done some growing up in the last three years and I ' ve seen you all do the same. When I took on the class as sophomores after Miss Gerstein left, I had no idea why. I saw you as a giggly, gangling, gar¬ rulous conglomeration of teenagers trying to be grown¬ up. Your visions of yourselves hadn ' t developed yet, let alone your identity with your class. A class had not emerged. As you began to get a sense of yourselves and to assert yourselves as personalities, your class identity emerged as well — as diverse as the individuals in the class. It is the Class of ' 77 as seniors that I frankly enjoyed the most. As your goals began to turn uncertainly be¬ yond Reading High — to jobs, college, marriage, etc — your need for something tangible caused you to join forces as a class and to rely on one another for friendship and advice in a mutually difficult period. It was as se¬ niors that I saw you as real persons, sharing many of the same interests, opinions, concerns and imaginings that 1 have. Thank you for sharing yourselves with me. Let me end on an inspirational note. For all such in¬ spiration I turn to the ancient world, for I couldn ' t have said it better myself. “Everywhere chance reigns. Just cast out your line And where you least expect it, There wasts a fish in the swirling water. 173 Wg m ip 1 Hygj. SSL.
