His enthusiasm and support for our class have been inspirational for us in the under¬ taking of many activities. Mr. Rhodes has been an ex¬ cellent Class Advisor. He has always directed us with the best of his ability whenever we needed to be guided in class affairs. Without question, he has demonstrated his generosity to our future by giving so much of his valuable time to us in the present. The Class of 1975 proudly dedicates this yearbook to Mr. Steven Rhodes. DEDICATION t DEDICATION WALTER E. HAWKES And when the one great scorer comes to write against your name, it is not whether you won or lost but how you played the game. — Anonymous Seventeen years ago, Walter E . Hawkes, bearing this thought with him, came to Reading Memorial High School where he has worked diligently to expand the athletic program and to further develop the opportu¬ nities in physical education. His belief in the impor¬ tance of determination and courage in sports has gained him the enthusiastic respect of students and faculty alike. Besides these major accomplishments, Coach Hawkes has supported and encouraged every sports participant, and the coach’s attendance at various meets and games has displayed his devoted involvement with the students at Reading High. In appreciation for his contributions to the student body at Reading Memorial High School, we proudly dedicate this yearbook to Coach Walter E. Hawkes. ADMINISTRATION Ara A. I ' ve loved it here and I’ve had so many great times. I am so glad that I ' ve had this amazing chance to truly get to know the people here; it has been such a worthwhile and rewarding experience. The kids here have been so friendly and have really accepted me into their midst. We have had so many happy times and these memories of all the fun we ' ve had will always be with me: Hal¬ loween, Thanksgiving, Senior Play, tobogganing, and parties — all the ac¬ tivities I have been involved in this year which have brought me into contact with wonderful people who are now my friends. My life is richer and fuller because of this year. In many ways, the year has seemed such a short time because it has been so busy and full that time has gone very quickly. However, I sometimes feel that 1 must have been here longer because my life is now so involved and inter¬ woven with Reading that it is strange to try to realize that a year ago I knew no¬ body here and Reading was just a place on the map. I cannot thank everyone enough who has made this year so fantastic: my fam¬ ily, my friends, and all the people who have added to my experience. — Nicky Cottier Once upon a time there was a little blond girl . . . The story of my life could begin like that — as a fairy tale. And like a fairy tale, my life has been going by so fast that I can scarcely notice the different steps of my wonderful eighteen years. Life to me is a synonym of precious. Each day I am constantly dreaming and hoping. Being an A.F.S. student was my big dream and it came true. I had always wanted to meet different people, learn dif¬ ferent ideas and methods, experience every¬ thing in order to grow. Now I find myself thinking about my year abroad and every¬ thing and everybody I ' ve been meeting on my way. I ' ve changed so much . . .I’m not the same. This year has been a year inside myself and I ' ve been experiencing the happiness of knowing the depths of myself much better because this year has been one of the an¬ swers to the many questions that I have had. I see the world at a different and much more interesting angle. I feel now that there is no “best place to live.” The world is my home country. I ' ve been living the purpose of my being here: 1 am sharing life, hopes, joy, sadness and I ' m mixing up cultures and melting them together to get a much stronger link of friendship between races, and I am, with the help of other people, trying to show how similar all races are. They are all run¬ ning for a common thing: the search for peace, love, faith, and hope inside every one of us in order to give them away. This year shall live in my mind and heart forever. I still remember clearly the day I left R.M.H.S. to spend a year in Chile. But all the tears that I shed that day as I left behind my friends and teachers were few compared to those that I shed when the time came for me to leave Chile. In spite of all the difficulties I had had. not understanding the language at first, struggling to understand seemingly in¬ comprehensible customs and ways of thinking, it was a wonderful year. I ' ve felt the joy of finally being able to express myself adequately in another language, and the warmth of true friendship. I had the opportunity to live for a year in a Latin American country, under a military regime, to live with and adapt myself to another family and their lifestyle, to attend a private religious school for girls, to meet and talk with and laugh with and become attached to a people with customs and backgrounds completely different from mine. Through American Field Service and my family, I travelled through prac¬ tically all of Chile, from its northern border, Peru, to its southernmost conti¬ nental port. Travelling, visiting places of interest, and meeting people has enabled me to recognize many of the Chilean ' s at¬ tributes: his generosity, hospitality, sense of humor, frankness, and pride in his heritage and traditions. And, most importantly. I’ve learned that although there are differences between cultures and political idealogies, people in gener¬ al are basically the same. — Lisa Donaghey Eleonora de Menez Costal .Mi y o ■ wtii HH , ■ i ' PI «$ ' { . ! Why can’t we be fri ends, and start all over again? I won’t ask you if, the birds still sing or the pigeons fly. Or even if you really meant to hurt me so. But 1 only ask that we be friends, and start all over again. Is it too much for you to take, to have one more friend whom you shouldn’t hate? The pigeons love and then are gone, but I am like the dove. With the giving of my love, I cannot forever be gone. So, please, oh Brother of Mankind, take my hand. Together we shall walk this land.
