DEDICATION Mr. Kenneth Levesque To dedicate a yearbook is a difficult task. The purpose of a dedication is to give recognition and thanks to the person whose involvement and service to the class merit such an honor. There are many such people in this school who should be thanked for their aid to us over the last four years; outstanding among these people is the Senior Class Advisor, Mr. Kenneth Levesque. He has helped with many senior activities: the senior play, senior talent niglit, senior supper and prom, and the victory dances. His optimistic and enthusiastic attitude makes him always ready to try for the best. He is a man who has gained the respect of all the students who have known him. Mr. Levesque deserves recognition for all he had done for the class of’74, and we are proud to be able to dedicate our yearbook to this outstanding member of the RMHS faculty. 4 ARA KARAKASHIAN Principal “Tliete’s no substitute for hard work if you wish to succeed in anything you undertake. If you wish to excel, you will have to work even harder and become your own severest critic before you can take justifiable pride in your accomplishments.” ERNEST SPENCE Assistant Principal If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love,.Love is patient and kind; Love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong; but rejoices at rig ht. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. ... So Faith, Hope, Love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is Love. 1st Corinthians 13 ISA ZIMMERMAN Assistant Principal plato told plato told him: he couldn t believe it (iesus told him; he wouldn’t believe it) lao tsze certainly told liim, and general (yes mam) sherman; and even (believe it or not) you told him: i told liim; we told him (he didn’t believe it, no sir) it took a nipponized bit of the old sixth avenue el; in the top of his head: to tell liim e. e. This is the international organization which brought to us this year Fakhria Masumi from Afghanistan, and through which two seniors from RMHS may be selected annually to live abroad for a school year or a summer. Althougli its headquarters are in New York, it is the local chapter in Reading wliich has primary responsibility for selecting students from our school and for providing host families for students from other countries. Since the Reading Chapter was formed in 1955, twenty-two seniors from our high school have lived and studied in many areas of the world. The young people who are selected for these programs look forward to participating in a way of life quite different from their own—not as visitors or guests, but as fully involved members of a family. They must be adaptable, open-minded and eager to learn. The goal of A.F.S. is mutual understanding among all peoples, and the deep experiences enjoyed by an AFSer cannot be found in any book. Left to Right Lisa Donaghey, Herb Hoyt, Dottie Singleton, Bill Karl, Dave Biette, Debbie Onusseit, Steve Ahlstrom, Karen Schubarth, Fakhria Masumi (KNEELING), Liz Merullo, Patty Parker, David Lake, Karen .Merullo, Katie Scott. 146 Karen Merullo, Steve Alilstrom, Fakhria Masumi My first reaction to receiving the news that 1 would spend the summer of 1973 in Kairouan, Tunisia was “Where in the world is that?” 1 found out soon enougli that Tunisia is a tiny republic on the coast of North Africa. That, however, was about all 1 knew when 1 left Reading to I begin my new life as an Arab. I spent those ten weeks learning a multitude of new I things about myself, my country, and especially about the I wonderful people of Tunisia. 1 learned to speak fluent 1 French mixed with a little Arabic; 1 learned to eat spicy 1 new foods with unpronounceable names and to wear a white robe showing only my eyes when 1 ventured into the 1 market. In the market I learned a little of the fine art of I arguing with the shopkeepers until the price of an item was I satisfying to us both. I learned some of the beauty of the I Moslem Religion and how similar it is to my own Christian j beliefs. The most important thing that I learned was that no I way of life is the “right way.” The American way is very i different from the Tunisian way but both have a beauty of their own. Karen Merullo A.F.S. — Tunisia 1973 A.F.S. is only three letters but it has a great meaning. 1 was very fortunate to become involved in this meaning which will be unforgetable all my life. I had always heard of A.F.S. and it was my great desire to participate in it. Fm very glad that 1 could. It is quite a challenge to leave your own country and family to go to another country with a completely different culture and live with another family. But, you soon realize that people are nice and accept you as their own. You realize how delightful it is to know other people in a different part of the world from your own and live with them in friendship and peace. They will become a part of your life which you will always tliink about when you remember their kindness and love. I don’t know whether I would have had exactly the same feeling if I had gone some place else in my A.F.S. year, but I am very happy I was able to come to Reading. My A.F.S. experiences are great. I will always remember them and all of you also. Fakhria Masumi A.F.S. - U.S.A. 1973-1974 After seventeen years of living in Reading, spending a summer in a large city like Amsterdam was really something different. Still, narrow buildings mostly under ten stories tall, brick-layed streets, tree-shaded canals, and friendly people, combined to give Amsterdam a cozy atmosphere. Despite the city’s attractiveness and good times, I enjoy country living, and I got just that, too. It was a gift from A.F.S. that became one of the higli points of my summer. I spent one week in a nature camp with two other American AFSers and thirty Dutch kids. Together, during the day we raked and stacked hay, and at night we sang and danced folk dances from different countries. Whether we were “making hay as the sun shone,” doing chores, or having well-water fights, it was all fantastic fun. My A.F.S. experience embraced many things that made it unique, but most of all I enjoyed the friends I found in Amsterdam, at camp, in my family, and especially the other American AFSers. With these people 1 shared initial fears, frustrations, discoveries, and joys, all of which brought us closer together.
