I I The 1973 Pioneer is dedicated to Dr. Isa K. Zimmerman in sincere appreciation for all she has done for us, as individuals, and as members of the RMHS student body. Thank you” seems inadequate to say to one who has accomplished so much in such a short time. Dr. Zimmerman has generously lent her spirit, charm, and imagination to problems and projects, both old and new, personal and school wide. Her innovative ideas have affected us all, sparking a new awareness for learning which extends far beyond school walls. She has dedicated herself to us with a sincere concern for our individual growth, and as a symbol of our gratitude we now dedicate the yearbook to her. 4 I an 1INIS1 The real purpose of education is to help people find good and valid reasons for being alive and staying alive— to bring order out of disorder, to see sense in a welter of nonsense, to find beauty in a profusion of ugliness, and finally to develop life styles that will provide them a measure of contentment and serenity a cut above the purely animalistic level of existence. I congratulate those members of the graduating class who have achieved some of those insights. I grieve for the others who failed to make the effort to learn what RMHS was really all about. Ara A. Karakashian The daily obligation of attending school for many years has played an important part in developing your character. To be dependable is an outstanding trait for any person. Just as we all depend on the physical laws of the universe to give stability and continuity to our physical environment, so it is that we depend on each other to give continuity to our lives. Man depends on man. Other men are depending on you. Ernest G. Spence It is our job as administrators to create a climate at RMHS in which teachers and students will do their jobs—happily, productively, and most important, ex¬ cellently. We strive to set a tone and esta blish a direction for the school from which everyone in the building benefits. That includes our work in scheduling, curriculum development, faculty supervision, student discipline. It causes us to be concerned with such things as budget and behavior. It is our educational goal to enable students to find their own educational goals. Perhaps one of the most significant words in our language is Why.” Not the surly Why” of the 20 horse¬ power rebel in search of a crusade, but that sincerely curious Why” with w ' hich a mature person tries to dis¬ cover his piece of truth. Habitual use of that question allows one to use the free inquiry which can lead to valid conclusions. It also allows the intelligent mind to change. It is, in reality, a beautiful word. L. F. D’Orlando Dr. Isa Zimmerman David Castine Guidance The ability to learn is a miracle; the willingness to learn is wonderful, the opportunity to learn is available— the future belongs to those who care and prepare Helen Hart Guidance The mark of an educated person is his ability to recognize the fact that there are many things he doesn’t know; therefore, he must never give up his pursuit of knowledge.” Edward Brady Guidance Life is a series of choices we make to bring about our own destiny what¬ ever it may be. It takes the individual and his accom¬ plishments and acknowledges, however superficially, what has happened to him during that time span. As we leave RMHS, we pause to remember Frank Miller, a classmate who was with us for so brief a time. Frank’s activities reflected an action-oriented life¬ style. Skiing, hockey, camping were but a few of the sports and outdoor activities he relished. His need for activity was consistent; he was best at projects and situations involving manual skill. Fixing a car or working with wood—he was most relaxed when working with his hands. During his freshman and sophomore years he also became interested in Youth Narc, an organization which devotes its time to the mentally retarded; he served as its president during his sophomore year. A very private person with a few close friends, Frank, is remembered best by them for his sense of humor, loyalty and desire for independence. 110 ON BECOMING AN ADULT: 111 S? . r W¥jkte .jr h l ' -- ■ - : ’ip fw ' - -T.J. It seems only natural to compare a completely new situation with what you’re accustomed to. People in Norway were easy-going and seldom in a hurry. Since my new family was so close and loving, I actually felt like part of them within two weeks of my arrival. Weekdays we worked very hard, but eve¬ nings and Sundays were spent visiting friends or hiking through the beautiful mountains. The language barrier was a slight prob¬ lem for me at first, but with the patient help of my three host sisters I was soon able to participate in simple conversations. I’ll never forget the great feeling the first time my Norwegian mother and I conversed and actually comprehended each other! I tried to give my host family and others I met a realistic idea of people and life in America. In turn I certainly gained an understanding of some new people and their country. A surprise to me was how similar these people are to us. I left Norway with many happy memories and the feeling that people are much alike, whether you happen to be living in Reading, Massachusetts or Viksdalen, Norway—or anywhere else in the world. This past year in Reading attending RMHS has been an interesting one for me. Such a close contact with another culture has been educational, and it has given me new ideas and views from which I hope I can benefit. It is also my hope that I have contributed a little to spread knowledge about my own culture. People always want to know which one I hold for the better, but that is a question that is impossible to answer, because the products of both societies resemble each other greatly. Maybe not in what they do every day and their ways of tackling prob¬ lems, but in their values and goals. I would like to say Thank you” to the town of Reading. RMHS, and last but not least the Garrards for their hospitality, which made me feel welcome and as a part of the family.
