rn any corner. Hear, you must hear what the people say You know there’s something goin’ on here, That surely won’t stand the light of day. And it appears to be a long, Such a long time before the dawn. Speak out, you got to speak out against The madness, you got to speak your mind, If you dare. But don’t try to get yourself elected. If you do you had better cut your hair. ’Cause it appears to be a long time, Before the dawn. It’s been a long time cornin’, It’s goin’ to be a long time gone. But you know, the darkest hour Is always just before the dawn. And it appears to be a long time. Such a long time before the dawn. KARASHIAN Principal “The mature, well-integrated person knows that freedom can never be absolute. He und erstands and willingly accepts the reasonable restraints of his society. He also limits his behavior according to the dictates of his own conscience. He knows that in order to find any real meaning, lasting contentment and inner peace in his life, his actions must be consistent with his beliefs. Becoming the person one wants to be requires constant striving, self-discipline and oc¬ casional self-denial. ARA A. KARAKASHIAN LEONARD F. D’ORLANDO Assistant Principal From SONG OF MYSELF. . . . In all people I see myself, none more and none less, And the good or bad I say of myself I say of them . . . I exist as I am, that is enough, If no other in the world be aware I sit content, And if each and all be aware I sit content . . . Walt Whitman, a kosmos, of Manhattan the son, Turbulent, fleshy, sensual, eating, drinking, and breeding, No sentimentalist, No stander above men and women or apart from them, No more modest than immodest. . . WALT WHITMAN « DR. ISA K. ZIMMERMAN Assistant Principal TO A YOUNG CHILD. Margaret, are you grieving Over Goldengrove unleaving? Leaves like the things of man, you With your fresh thoughts care for, can you? Ah! as the heart grows older It will come to such sights colder By and by, nor spare a sigh Through worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie; And yet you will weep and know why. Now no matter, child, the name: Sdrrow’s springs 6re the same. Nor mouth had, no nor mind, expressed What heart heard of, ghost guessed: It is the blight man was born for, It is Margaret you mourn for. GERAD MANLEY HOPKINS ERNEST G. SPENCE Assistant Principal HIGH FLIGHT. Oh, I have slipped the surly bands of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings Sunward I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds—and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long delirious, burning burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace, Where never lark, or even eagle, flew: And, while with silent, lifting mind I ' ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. The experience of living here, with the Baird family, attending Reading Memorial High School and being part of the community has taught me so much about this country and Americans. And I have also learned about my own country for I have been made more aware of its advantages and disadvantages. I will never forget all that has been done for me by the people here. What I have enjoyed most at school has been the discussions with those students who were able to share their feelings and ideas with me. I have gained a greater understanding of people and a broader outlook on life. KEN MUIR This has been a rewarding year for me, one during which I’ve experienced intense feelings of joy and satisfaction and occasionally of discouragement. I’m happy here in Lulea enjoying my Swedish family, the Swedish people, the challenge of their language, their food, customs, and sports. In fact I ' ve become somewhat of a cross country ski nut and do admire their relatively unspoiled outdoors. I genuinely appreciate having this opportunity to live in Sweden for a year. Grade officers were elected: Mike Millman-president, Sally Johnston-vice president, Jane Calvo-secretary, and Bill Symonds-treasurer. With the commencement of school plays, we started our reign as refreshment kings. During February we went on a ticket drive for the school’s musical. The debates on a new school addition came to a climax. Kim Murdock was named to the State Cast for her performance in the Drama Club production, “The Boor.” The assembly about the Kent State crisis was a first in the school’s history. Excessive winter snowstorms caused us to sacrifice our spring vacation. The sophomore hop “Cloud Nine” became the first stag (or drag) dance ever held at RMHS. Kevin Mahoney was elected tennis captain as a junior for next year. Our last event as sophomores was the election of junior officers. Jeff Teel who became the new vice president was the only officer different from our sophomore set up. New hours and a tighter schedule greeted us in our junior year as we began double sessions. A new Student Union was created, thanks to a lot of hard work from Glenn Nozick and other con¬ cerned students. No midyears were given to most students. The operetta “Oliver” was a great success. To raise money for our class, the traditional bake sale was held at Bradlees as well as a profitable spaghetti supper, at the Congo Church. The RMHS Band participated in an overnight exchange concert with the Groveton, N.H. band. It was hard to think against the sounds of construction and with spring just around the corner studying be¬ came doubly hard. The production “Ceremony of Innocence” was again one of the best performances at the Drama Festival. The long dreaded S.A.T.’s and Achievements made life more complicated than before. But the Junior Prom “On The Threshold Of A Dream”, revived everyone’s spirits. It was now time for the senior class elections. To head our big year was Jeff Tell-presi- dent, Rick Cornet-vice president, Jane Calvo and Liz Diamond- dual secretaries, and Bill Symonds-treasurer. With the great pitching of junior Dean Kouloris, Reading’s baseball team went undefeated to win the Middlesex League Championship. Newly elected Student Union officers, President Mike Millman, Vice President Dwight Shen, Secretary Pat Cioffi, and Treasurer Judy Gillis, brought school to a close with an experiment called the Colloquium. Rap sessions between students, teachers, and in- terested townspeople were successful, but it was evident from the long list of absentees that many students were suffering from summer fever. We said good-bye to Ken Muir, our exchange student to Sweden and at the same time welcomed Heather Sladdin, RMHS’s AFS student from Australia. Although the new addition was not yet completed, we started our senior year at RMHS with all four grades together. We, as seniors, were supposed to be the leaders of the school and to know our way around, but with all the new buildings we were as lost as everyone else. Because our clas had been on double ses¬ sions when the lower classes came to the high school, we hardly knew any juniors, sophomores, or freshmen. The change from getting out at noon to getting out at two thirty was a sad but necessary part of the new year and most of us were able to ad¬ just. The 1971-72 football season proved to be the best we’ve had in four years and it ended happily with a victory over Stoneham at the traditional Thanksgiving game. The girls weren’t so lucky in their powder puff game against Wakefield, but they put up a good fight. In November we presented our Senior Play “Dark of the Moon”, starring Donna Heffernan and Mai White. Annual awards were bestowed on exceptional players at the football banquet, and as usual, Hollingsworth Humor made the evening. The Ingersoll went to Mike Millman. With the help of the new assistant principal Dr Zimmerman, the school revived its news¬ paper and Mr. D’Orlando christened it “Rap-Up”. Due to a shift in the Guidance Dept, our class lost Miss Hart as our class guid¬ ance counselor, but she still was helpful to all of us. Midway in the year we welcomed two new seniors—Brian D’Arcy and Richard Young and welcomed back Terry Thomman. In February, the Music Dept, presented their annual operetta “Of Thee I Sing”, starring Tom Jackson, Wendy Henderson, Peter Richey, and Leigh Priebe. Thanks to the efforts of the Senior captains, Read¬ ing boasted great track and wrestling teams. During February vacation, the Student Union painted a mural designed by Nancy Kathan on the Cafeteria wall. Dana Fields and Mai White, through their great columns in the Chronicle, kept townspeople in touch with the school. The new addition was completed with the dedi¬ cation of the Field House to Coach Walter Hawkes. Senior Dan Snow ran and was elected for town meetinq in the town elections. Reading High School was host to the Regional Drama Guild Festival and Drama Club entered “A Doll’s House”. Talent Night and Mini-Courses were discussed for the Spring. Normal Senior trivia culminated with our Senior Prom at Rolling Green. Gradua¬ tion! puff! ! pant! ! at last! !
