How one succeeds or finds happiness depends, of course, upon his own interpretation of these often elusive and mostly ephemeral goals. Yet, even though the experiences of success and happiness are highly personal and intimate sensations, the degree and frequency with which they occur in any one person depend in part on the degree and frequency with which they occur in other people who surround the individual. Thus, if one is to achieve his fair share of success and happiness, he should strive continually to do whatever he can to make it possible for other people to experience their fair share of the same. ARA A. KARAKASHIAN Find time to be alone. Find time to contemplate the universe and your place in it. Life becomes so involved that we do not have those brief moments when we can simply gaze skyward and see the stars and the vastness of space. We have to seek or create our solitary moments. Even as the astronauts sus¬ pended in the void of space can be alone with the universe, so we can envision the immensity of our¬ selves within the quiet spaces of our own backyards. ERNEST G. SPENCE Your short time here, in a sense, has been a re¬ flection of life in miniature. You move now from time past and present to what will be. Each of us has to decide what ought to be in our own futures. Will we love or will we hate . . . will we learn or be ignorant . . . will we keep on trying to improve our natures or will we give in to what is base? Your generation has resurrected the idea that a person should not be judged by his material con¬ quests, but by his inner characteristics. It’s a good idea for an “ought-to-be” goal. L. F. D’ORLANDO 4 ■S 7. % . W lk.0. DEDICATION We, the editors of Pioneer 71, on behalf of our entire graduating class, wish to dedicate our yearbook effort to Mrs. Jane Cutcliffe, for her many years of devout service to the English Department of Reading Memorial High. With knowledge of how difficult she will be to replace, we nonetheless extend kind thoughts and best wishes for an enjoyable, well-deserved, and fruitful retirement beginning next year. “Remembrance is a form of meeting.” —Kahlil Gibran 5 . First of all everybody here is very nice. I have never met people so nice. It made me feel at home. Then in a couple of months my English improved, although my Spanish accent makes my English terrible! It’s very easy to make girlfriends in Reading High but when a boy speaks to me I have the impression that something strange is going to happen to me. I have enjoyed my year here very much. I have gotten the wonderful experience of knowing the Americans, the good and bad face of the life in the U.S. and people all around the world. There are two things that I ' ll never forget: Reading people and my year here. Rosa Maria Andujar A.F.S. 1970-1971 When the train stopped at Pau, I can remember being tired. Tired of speaking French, tired from the nine hour train ride, tired of knowing that everything I did was wrong but more than that I was scared. Would they like me? Would I like them? Would we understand each other? As the weeks went by the mystery of my new life began to re¬ veal itself to me and I realized my family and I weren’t that different. For the first time in my life, I learned to commu¬ nicate without speaking and how to listen and understand— perhaps I learned to live a little. I remember the joys, disap¬ pointments, successes, failures, smiles and tears that we shared. Then it was time to leave and I wondered if they knew how much they meant to me. All I could say was “merci pour tout” but it was enough—they understood. Lynne Bacon A.F.S. France 1970 Paul Russo — Niedersachsische Heimschule — Esens, Germany After a period of adjustment I now feel at home in Germany. I have learned German well enough to know what is going on and know the students at my school well enough to have a good time. We play handball and volley ball often, as well as attending the theater in Esens. School is difficult and I am now expected to participate verbally in class, because of the progress I have made with the language. I am looking forward to seeing all my friends when I return in July. 125 Library Assistants Projection Crew National Merit Scholarship Finalists Office Assistants FOOTBALL Reading 6 — Reading 0 — Reading 10 — Reading 6 — Reading 8 — Reading 6 — Reading 0 — Reading 7 — Reading 20 — Lexingon 31 Belmont 22 Woburn 6 Wakefield 34 Winchester 36 Watertown 7 Concord 15 Melrose 8 Stoneham 20 The 1970-71 R.M.H.S. The rest of the team was made up of nine sophomores and five freshmen. Steve Desisto, the highest scorer, was aided by such excel¬ lent players as Chip Gent, Johnny Ballou, Doug Roy, Fran Kiley, and Richie Burns. The team beat Wincester twice 3-2 and 5-4, Concord twice 3-2 and 7-3, split with Watertown, and tied Wakefield 2-2 in the best game of the season. Because of wrestlers like Jimmy Barret, who was undefeated this season and placed first in the north¬ east sectionals as well as fifth in the state finals, and Ralph Sulis, who was second in the sectionals and fifth in the state, the team as a whole was able to place third in the sectionals. What a pity that the people from the city can’t relate to the slower things that the country brings—time itself is bought and sold. The spreading fear of growing old contains a thousand foolish games that we play, while people planning trips to stars allow another boulevard to claim a quiet country lane— it’s insane, so the subtle face is the loser this time around; here we are in the years where the showman shifts the gears— lives become careers, children cry in fear, “let us out of here!” —NEIL YOUNG 162 ' ipV ?: ■ Got to get away from this day to day running around; Everybody knows this is nowhere.
