The knowledge we have received from Miss Bartlett’s classes is not learning from a book but from oneself. Miss Bartlett has had to give more than from an encyclopedia—she has had to give of herself. A friendly smile, an extended hand, and a warm heart have made our classes and after-school activities a great deal more meaningful while at RMHS. Miss Bartlett has coached and taught with a firm hand, but has allowed for the laughs and good times when she has felt them appropriate. In sports, class, and gymnastics, Miss Bartlett has acquired the respect of all who work under her. We the Class of 1970 have felt the warmth of knowing that someone really wants us to reach a goal. Whether it be a forward roll on the mats, a double leg cut on the rings, or a simple” win on the field, we have known that there is that one person there cheering us on and helping every inch of the way. To you Miss Bartlett—our Thanks! Thank you for understanding and trying to help us through these important years of our lives. We must admit that we have made things quite difficult at times, but we do appreciate your putting up with us. We hope we will all realize what you have given to our class when, in June, you think to yourself— I know what I have given you—I know not what you have taken.” idea taken from Antonio Porchia Pioneer Editors Editor-in-Chief . .Kathleen Russell Coordinator . .Donna Kulakowski Art Editors . . FACULTY Administration Mr. Karakashian Principal A few words to each member of the Class of 1970— One thing you and I are agreed upon is that the human being is improvable and that the process through which he improves is the process of education. If you did not believe this, you would have dropped out of school long ago. Now that you are about to be graduated from high school, don’t abandon this belief. Whether you continue, your formal education elsewhere or not, continue to observe, think, learn, and grow. Don’t despair if the broad societal changes you desire are slow in coming. Stay within the broad mainstream of your society and do your bit by improving the quality of your own life, and the world will surely become a better place to live in. Ara A. Karakashian Mr. Spence 1970! The new decade we begin is another chance, not just for you, but for all mankind. This new world before us is too immense, too diffuse—too intricate and complex for one person to contain or comprehend it all. The ideal of the Renaissance Man—he who strove to know all, to be all—is now an impossibility. All we can hope to do is to choose as wisely as we can the one theme in time which best has meaning for us and to live our theme, do our thing. Mr. D ' Orlando Your generation has a freshness of vision, question¬ ing mood, and willingness to participate which can make you highly effective in chipping away the rust of hypocrisy from the old verities of the human heart which Faulkner wrote about—love, honor, compassion, freedom. By your actions, ideas, and feelings you can re-create those values for yourselves. The process is eternal. 9 Guidance Counselors Mr. Pacino Miss Hart illliPv V- SW; mmm. SM 39 fve never been able to push the clouds away by myself, 41 42 jg£ M American Field Service Nish Akanuma and Mark Dobbins I was dreaming of my second home-town Reading in the bus running on a super highway through beautiful green trees beside lots of blue lakes. When I got here, I noticed it was almost the same with the Reading in my dream; color¬ ful houses among trees, the school made of brick, and beautiful churches, etc. I think kids have more freedom here than in Japan. You don’t have to worry about your college so much. You don’t have to study hard regardless whether it is good or not. You can do anything you want to. I think America is a paradise with lots of troubles; Vietnam war, racial problems, social problems like Hippies and drugs, crime in the big cities. Here we have freedom—sometimes too much—and what we should do now is think of mental problems more than physical problems. )FS 61-7°- What will I say to them? What will they say to me? How will we understand each other? A thousand such thoughts babbled through my head as the old train rumbled on its way to Limache. The true beginning of my AFS experience in Chile would soon be upon me. What would await me there in Limache, in my new family, my new school, my new friend¬ ships? What secrets were hiding behind their strange faces, their strange names, their strange language? As the months went by, I shared their lives from day to day, and their mystery began to unravel itself before me. They were not so strange after all, we really began to understand each other quite well. It was a year of understanding really, a year of understanding satisfaction and disappointment, success and failure, happiness and sadness, joy and sorrow. It was a year of living, perhaps. It was a year of people living together. But my year ended all too quickly, and as the day of departure drew closer, again I thought of my family, my friends, my town, strangers-never- more, and I said, What will I say to them?” There was no need for words—we understood one another. _ 2 FTT-c - fS 61-76.
