SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In T954, seventy-four bewildered, scared young and green Freshies entered Reading High School. Our sponsors were: Miss Helen Worrall, Mr. Andrew Frazier, and Mr. Robert Howe. We elected as our class officers: Pres- ident, Dick Meyer, Vice-President, Jim Herbstreit, Secretary, Joyce Huff, and Treas- urer, Sue Hester. We chose United We Stand, Divided We Fall for our motto, red and gray for our colors, and a red carnation for the class flower. Joyce Huff and Clifford Dixon were elected to the Student Council to assist Sue Hester and Jim Herbstreit, who were represen- tatives elected in their eighth grade year. Our first success was a dance called Shamrock Ball . Before that dance we found it difficult to associate with the upperclass- men but it wasn't long until we joined in all the school activities that were to make our school days happy ones. The summer passed quickly and our soph- omore year started off with the election of our class officers: President, Jim Herbstreit, Vice- President, Ben Bollmer, Secretary, Ron Golden, Treasurer, Grace Stephens. Our advisors for the year were Miss Hofmann, Mr. Frazier, and Mr. Howe. Sue Hester and Jim Herbstreit were again elected to the student council. Our Christmas Dance, Mistletoe Mambo, complete with tree and all its trimmings was a gala affair. Another dance was given for St. Patrick's Day. Again there was the rush for money-making projects. Unfortunately, we didn't have the opportunity to handle any large sums of money. Although, we were developing healthy minds, a little poise, and a better understand- ing of the people around us, we were never- theless still typical sophomores. ln the fall of '55 with the thought of hard work ahead, we once again elected our offi- cers: President, Jim Herbstreit, Vice-President, Jack Jefferies, Secretary, Ron Golden, and Treasurer, Lesley Brune. Mr. Frazier became permanent sponsor with the assistance of Miss Foltz and Mr. Miller. There was a change in the Student Council this year as Joyce Huff and Ben Bollmer were elected as the represen- tatives. During this year our Mother's Club was formed. As membership in the organization grew, many fine projects were completed. We are grateful to the mothers who gave their time and hard work as members of the group. Our first dance of the year, Their --r A- 1- 'ff Majesties Ball, was held in November. Melvin Miller and Alice Herrin made a lovely couple as football king and queen of this dance Early in the year we began making plans for the Junior-Senior Prom. Realizing that this activity would place an enormous dent in our treasury, we worked hard on bake sales, a dance, and ice skating field trips. When the night of the Junior-Senior Prom finally arrived, it seemed like a royal ball rather than just another annual activity. Dick Jones and Jackie Wilks reigned as king and queen. ln T956, to us the world seemed very bright as we returned to school. We were no longer the timid freshmen, but the confident, happy seniors. We met early in September to elect offi- cers to guide us through our last year in Reading. Jim Herbstreit was elected to a third term as President, Vice-President, Orven Nicely, Secretary, Ben Bollmer, and Treasurer, Nancy Asbrock. Sue Hester and Jim Herbstreit were elected for the final time to the Student Council. Miss Foltz and Miss Glaser assisted Mr. Frazier in advising and planning activities for our class. The usual activities were planned and completed and they added a large sum to our treasury. Our biggest event of this ear was the Senior Dinner held on November ll. Much time and energy was spent in planning and serving the dinner, but because it was a great success, we soon forgot the hard work. The Junior-Senior Prom held in May was a most memorable night. Claude Osteen and Joyce Veddern were chosen king and queen. We will always remember the splendid recep- tion which the Junior Class gave in our honor. Our Senior trip from May T8 through May 26 was all we hoped for and more. The four years of work, sales, and dances were all worth the goal. Commencement week came all too soon. As we marched down the candle-lit aisle to- ward the stage, there were many of us with happy but sad hearts. This was the end of one way of life and the beginning of another. We shall never forget that pleasant June night and all the memories it holds for us. With graduation, we bid a fond farewell to Reading High and to all those who have taught us the importance of an education and a correct way of life. -I..
