Singer began his career at Reading High School in 1945 as an English and Latin teacher and as a friend to the stu- dents. Mr. Singer is the Director of Publications, including the Annual and Typhoon. He advises the Chess Club and is the tennis coach. He is in charge of publication of programs and serves as decoration chairman. He has taken his Latin classes on tours and he formed the Classics Club. He was permanent advisor to the Classes of 1951 and 1956. In his spare time, he has collected art to beautify Reading School. Now in 1957, he is leaving us to become principal of our new Hilltop Grade School, where we believe he will do his best to help his teachers and pupils. Since he has been at Reading High School, he has always tried to help us do our best and strive to reach our highest goals. For his loyalty, his kindness, and his guidance, we, the Class of 1957, take great pleasure in dedicating the 1957 edition ofthe Reading Highlights to Mr. John J. Singer. 3 5 Wx BOARD OF EDUCATION 'mg Public Qclwols 4 R2 Q? ff' ,N ,.,. 2 R H 'E fr .'4 ' MR. MARCELLUS LUERS MR, RICHARD MA President ,I Vice -President 1 5 . N ,,, . viii J . - GJ 18 W . As each individual turns the pages of this book there might be a word or maybe a picture or name that will thrill him with pride. Then again he may find a scene where he would say lf l had just tried a little more how nice it would have been for the records. The school days are now over for the Class of 1957, who has been responsible for this year's annual, but the education, the foundation built in Reading High, will be with them forever. May we wish them the best of luck as they are now alumni of Reading High School. l personally would like to extend my sincere thanks to the faculty, students, fellow workers and commu- nity for the wonderful cooperation that has been extended to the administration throughout this school year. lay, .-.----.-.-..-.---.Q----u ADMINISTRATION ,max WN f ,ifQv 9 44,5 I ,S 2 ' , , - , -vf1x:: , ' ',' ...-:h1: 5 :iva n f f rf- Xiu . ., . , if A! G0oLiIfyC's and Farewellh. ,rf SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In T954, seventy-four bewildered, scared young and green Freshies entered Reading High School. Our sponsors were: Miss Helen Worrall, Mr. Andrew Frazier, and Mr. Robert Howe. We elected as our class officers: Pres- ident, Dick Meyer, Vice-President, Jim Herbstreit, Secretary, Joyce Huff, and Treas- urer, Sue Hester. We chose United We Stand, Divided We Fall for our motto, red and gray for our colors, and a red carnation for the class flower. Joyce Huff and Clifford Dixon were elected to the Student Council to assist Sue Hester and Jim Herbstreit, who were represen- tatives elected in their eighth grade year. Our first success was a dance called Shamrock Ball . Before that dance we found it difficult to associate with the upperclass- men but it wasn't long until we joined in all the school activities that were to make our school days happy ones. The summer passed quickly and our soph- omore year started off with the election of our class officers: President, Jim Herbstreit, Vice- President, Ben Bollmer, Secretary, Ron Golden, Treasurer, Grace Stephens. Our advisors for the year were Miss Hofmann, Mr. Frazier, and Mr. Howe. Sue Hester and Jim Herbstreit were again elected to the student council. Our Christmas Dance, Mistletoe Mambo, complete with tree and all its trimmings was a gala affair. Another dance was given for St. Patrick's Day. Again there was the rush for money-making projects. Unfortunately, we didn't have the opportunity to handle any large sums of money. Although, we were developing healthy minds, a little poise, and a better understand- ing of the people around us, we were never- theless still typical sophomores. ln the fall of '55 with the thought of hard work ahead, we once again elected our offi- cers: President, Jim Herbstreit, Vice-President, Jack Jefferies, Secretary, Ron Golden, and Treasurer, Lesley Brune. Mr. Frazier became permanent sponsor with the assistance of Miss Foltz and Mr. Miller. There was a change in the Student Council this year as Joyce Huff and Ben Bollmer were elected as the represen- tatives. During this year our Mother's Club was formed. As membership in the organization grew, many fine projects were completed. We are grateful to the mothers who gave their time and hard work as members of the group. Our first dance of the year, Their --r A- 1- 'ff Majesties Ball, was held in November. Melvin Miller and Alice Herrin made a lovely couple as football king and queen of this dance Early in the year we began making plans for the Junior-Senior Prom. Realizing that this activity would place an enormous dent in our treasury, we worked hard on bake sales, a dance, and ice skating field trips. When the night of the Junior-Senior Prom finally arrived, it seemed like a royal ball rather than just another annual activity. Dick Jones and Jackie Wilks reigned as king and queen. ln T956, to us the world seemed very bright as we returned to school. We were no longer the timid freshmen, but the confident, happy seniors. We met early in September to elect offi- cers to guide us through our last year in Reading. Jim Herbstreit was elected to a third term as President, Vice-President, Orven Nicely, Secretary, Ben Bollmer, and Treasurer, Nancy Asbrock. Sue Hester and Jim Herbstreit were elected for the final time to the Student Council. Miss Foltz and Miss Glaser assisted Mr. Frazier in advising and planning activities for our class. The usual activities were planned and completed and they added a large sum to our treasury. Our biggest event of this ear was the Senior Dinner held on November ll. Much time and energy was spent in planning and serving the dinner, but because it was a great success, we soon forgot the hard work. The Junior-Senior Prom held in May was a most memorable night. Claude Osteen and Joyce Veddern were chosen king and queen. We will always remember the splendid recep- tion which the Junior Class gave in our honor. Our Senior trip from May T8 through May 26 was all we hoped for and more. The four years of work, sales, and dances were all worth the goal. Commencement week came all too soon. As we marched down the candle-lit aisle to- ward the stage, there were many of us with happy but sad hearts. This was the end of one way of life and the beginning of another. We shall never forget that pleasant June night and all the memories it holds for us. With graduation, we bid a fond farewell to Reading High and to all those who have taught us the importance of an education and a correct way of life. -I.. The Class of-1957 e ,li- - V Lrg, 1' J. limp lm gc. ,1- 4- -pn :-1 Eitwtptslf-wrwtlw SALUTATORY ADDRESS, Lesley A. Brune V , S- P lt is my privilege and pleasure to be the representative of the class of 1957, to welcome each of you to this our . if-'fx commencement exercise. Upon entering Reading High School, as freshmen, four years ago, it was nothing but a dream that we would ever be sitting here tonight. Now, as this dream is being fulfilled, we realize that our hard X work, which at times seemed unbearable, has given this reward to us. This work, plus the many achievements we have accomplished, will make a lasting impression upon our lives. ln making this dream come true we realize the tremendoushelp that has been given to us. Our parents, although sometimes taken for granted, have made many sacrifices in order to send us through high school ..... We also wish to express our gratitude to the Board of Education. They have furnished us with modern equipment, so that we will be ready to take our places in the world. They also have provided us with a very wonderful and well-trained, competent faculty who have shown great interest in us with their never-ending personal attention. Had it not been for their personal attention we would not he ready to graduate tonight. A part of this faculty, our class sponsors, are the ones closest to us. Without their help we could not have made our wonderful trip. . . . . Last, but by far least, we wish to thank the people of the community for the interest they have taken in our various projects. They have passed the school bond issue for the Hilltop School which is now in the process of being built. This, when completed, will keep Reading from becoming overcrowded in the future. We are glad that the community takes such a large part in the education of the youth of our city. We appreaiate deeply the scholarships and awards offered by the P.T,A., the Student Council, the Lions Club, the Kiwanis, American Legion, and the Garden and Literary Clubs. These organizations stress good scholarship and the preparation of the leaders of tomorrow. As we face the future there is a combination of happiness and sadness. Happiness because we know we have fulfilled our dream and are taking our places in the world. Sadness because we are leaving the halls of Reading where we have formed many pleasant memories, and made many close friends. We know that these memories and friendships will long be cherished throughout the years ..... 1 A , CLASS PRESIDENTS ADDRESS , James H. Herbstreit 'I I' Mr. Durkee, members of the Board, and friends. p As you know it is customary for the graduating class to present to the school a parting token of remembrance. di 5 . This year the class of 1957 takes a great deal of pride and pleasure in presenting to their Alma Mater a new trophy case. The case has been placed in the upper hall of the high school and will supply room for our ever-grow- ing number of trophies. We present this gift in the hopes that Reading High will continue to win praise, as we know it will in both the academic and athletic fields. ln closing l would again like to thank each and every person who has helped to make our four years here at Reading four wonderful, happy years that will linger long in the memories of each of us. VALEDICTORY ADDRESS, Richard E. Meyer l957 marks the one-hundreth anniversary of the National Education Association. A century is a long time in the life span of individuals, but in the development of institutions it is a brief period indeed. It is the exception to have within a single century distinctively new institutional forms emerge and become well established. Yet this has ,D , A occurred in American education. . . n-U Our system of education was entering a period of great expansion 100 years ago. Men such as Horace Mann and Henry Barnard incorporated the concept of educational opportunity open to all without regard to class, economic status, or religious belief- -a grand concept for liberating and dignifying each person as an individual! For the first time in any nation, during the past century in America this goal has become an accepted national purpose toward which substantial progress has been made. In 1857, the curriculum of the school was planned for only the theology and the jurisprudence aspirants. There was little or no emphasis placed upon citizenship, practical use of knowledge gained in the school, or social consciousness. Book learning was the ex- tent of education. The Little Red Schoolhouse was for teaching the three R's and had little connection with community problems. . . . If you find these facts difficult to comprehend, then, as it is often said, Friend, you ain't seen nothin' yet! In the future school will operate on a year-round basis. The need for room would demand that students go to school in shifts of nine months each. Another idea was a straight twelve month school year, which would enable a student to complete high school in three years. More students could then be accommodated. Push-button education will be a reality. Electronics will function in the school room. Desks will be wired with earphones for each student. The teacher will operate a keyboard instrument and will be able to adapt the subject matter to the individual needs of the student. Classes will become so large that a microphone, a tape recording, or a television set will have to be used in order that everyone in the room may hear the instructor's lecture. Boys will be studying along the engineering and science fields, but so will seventy-five per cent or more of the girls. These things all seem remote to us at this time, but really they are not ..... From the work of the committee for the White House Conference on Education, one fundamental fact emerges: Schools now affect the welfare of the United States more than ever before in history, and this new importance of education has been dangerously underestimated for a long time. , , , , 33 ANNUAL JUNIOIZJ-SENIOR: PROM if :ff , ,. ,.r,--jg t , x , ,- W :Q ' Q 1 -1 Lil - 6' x ' ' ,lx fx ,Hmm Q 'Aa ., ri 1 Q A -f 0 VS X0 ' 4 ? ox BOXVOO Qvae' f -5 'X L L V x 9566 YV ' V A 'W Y 4 ff new wr X0 s- off' fn . we AW A' , ix , Q 6555 vlws Ov' X ' MQ +R X 5522-jj,L i 1 ' W T313 if-1,,i,ifff A 'lffif if-?' The beautiful building is located in Heilmann Heights designed by that famous architect Chuck Heilmann, and the construction work was done by the Three S-C-H's who are Bob Schehr, Bob Schierloh and Chuck Schulz. The Class of 1958 has gathered for an alumni meeting. As always, the class is loafing around trying to think of something to do. Whoops! Who is this coming through the door? Why, I do declare it's Flirtacious Jean Foltz, Gabby Rose Glaser, and, of course, Ambitious Andy Frazier who is now retired from being Superintendent of R.H.S. Behind them are the two new janitors, Gerald Broom pusher Parsons and Ron Carpet-cleaner Cromer, carrying a SPACERVISION-TELETRONIC set which used to be known as TV. Gabby Glaser is going on about something or another. What's that you say? Lanky Len Hank, is on SPACERVISION tonight with his show Slim, Slim, World. Do tell. Let's tune it in. Well, there he is, Lanky Len! Hey! the picture's fading, another face appears. lt's Peaches Peters saying a few words about a new smelling stuff called, Cummins Cologne, manufactured by J.J. Cummins Company. And now back to 'Lanky' Len , says that famous announcer Babbling Don Becker. Today, says Len, we are going to go to another continent. We shall visit several American cities, and if we have time we shall visit our sister station on Mars during Slim, Slim, World. First, we'll go to the Alps. Look! Over to the left of the screen are two hunters. Hunters my eye! That's Jim Herbstreit and his training coach, Fred Volkens. Through the SPACERVISION Len talks with Jim and Fred. Len asks Jim what he is running for and what is he doing in the Alps. Fred interrupts and says that Jim is here for the Olympics. But, Jim contradicts him . What's this? ls that a letter Jim is holding? Jim speeds up his pace and yells, Go West, young man! Go West! Is that a moose on top of that mountain to the right of the screen? Yes, I think it is, or is it? No, it's Glenda Whiteaker. What could she be doing in the Alps? Lanky Len says that he has made contact with Hollywood. Yes, there is that beautiful Martin-Golden-Meyer Studio. Here come the three big wheels now, says Len. Let's stop and chat with them., Ron Golden tells us that the star of his latest speed-spinner CNO longer called hot-rod moviesj has just had an accident. Coming through the door we see that it is Reckless Gene Lang. Tom Martin interrupts Len. Tom says that Speedy Tom Stephens will take over Gene's place until he fully recovers. Dancing Dick Meyer enters the room with his latest star, Zo Zo Zimmer, better known as Sheila. Dick and Zo Zo are dis- cussing an argument that she recently had with her producer who is of course, Naughty Wayne Newberry. Zo Zo is due on the set in a few minutes and her make-up artists Lanolin Linda James ahd Elaine Hair-dresser Haddick are frantically trailing her. Tall Norma Ball rushes on the screen to clear the way for that fabulous film star Ralph Dimp1es Page and his leading lady Princess Grace Stephens whose only comment is It's getting a little Ranier. Our cameras switch to New York City, where Millionaire Jack Miller is opening his fifth night club. Bouncer Ben Bollmer says that it will be a rough night at the Club because those famous dancing stars Lucious Bonnie Landy and Cautious Kay Reisenberg will be present with their escorts Bashful Dave Bessey and Sporty Gary Stone, the new heavyweight champion of the world. Down south whip the cameras, where we enter Florida, home of the Nicely Numbsculls, that famous baseball team, There's Orv now, talking to that great pitcher, Colossal Claude Osteen. Catcher Stew Calhoun is being coached by that famous trainer, Mischievous Martha Nierman. ln the stands we see Bruiser Lesley Brune, that great lady wrestler and her opponent Vicious Joyce Veddern. Also in the stands we see that clever attorney Fearless Pat Flege and her client Dangerous Clifford Dixon. Wait! What is this? A home run over the left field fence, Paul Kramer is circling third. Manager John Mather speeds out to home plate in his fordicopter to shake hands with Klu Kramer. The SPACERVISION-TELETRONIC camera zooms to her sister station on Mars. After soaring through outer-space, too many miles to count, we faintly see a picture. Lanky Len says that many Americans travel back and forth from Mars daily. I heard that Susie's Helicopter Service is doing a booming business, managed by one of the first women to go to Mars, Susan A. Hester, who is floating in cash. There is the winner of that famous quiz program on Mars, 3565 Million-Dollar Question, Brainy Glen Bolser. When did he start studying? Hold it! Charlene Clerk Kretschmar, girl Thursday to the President of the Mars Station rushes to the scene. After whispering something to her boss who is Tedious Ralph Theis, the brilliant speaker makes an announce- ment. Ralph says thatJa ck Germ1ess Jeffries has just made a miracle medicine that will cure a disease which Ailing Nancy Asbrock and Neurotic Jo Ann Niehaus obtained while exploring a distant planet. This is truly an amazing discovery and it will certainly help the two girls when they make further explorations on distant planets. And so our time is up, speaks Leng surely some of you out there will never forget the class of 1957 and all the things that it has done to the world, or should l say for the world. This is Lanky Len Hank signing off. - ' n E As someone in the room turns off the SPACERVISION, The Class of 1958 closes its alumni meeting with the thought that this could never have been prophesied by one of us. i I UIZ J U NIO v. The class felt that the motto The Wayis Hard but the Prize is Great still held a world of meaning. Our I class colors were the same, purple and white and our flower, the baby orchid. ' Once again our class sponsors were Miss Lang, Miss Brandenberger, and Mr. Pritchard, who helped in . making this year a big success. 1 At The Royal Pigskin Ball Nancy Asbrock and Jack Jeffries were crowned Football queen and king. The 1: second dance of the year was the Heart of my Heart Valentine Dance, and Janet Rulfs was our chosen queen l P I On March 29, we had a lot of fun presenting three one-act plays, which helped to increase our treasury. 1 The Mother's Club, with the help of the junior class members, gave a Smorgasbord dinner, April 28, l957. , Our money-making projects consisted of various bake sales and selling l Like or l Hate Elvis Pressley 5 pins, stationery, and Christmas candy. 1 The highlight of our iunior year was the Junior-Senior Prom, held in the ballroom of the Hotel Alms. Joyce I Veddern was chosen prom queen with Claude Osteen king. The Class of '59, under the leadership of our class sponsors, Mrs. Herzog, Mr. Matre and Mr. Turner, be- gan its very prosperous Sophomore year with the election of officers. Joe Miller was elected to the presidency. Sandy Morari was chosen Vice-Presidentp Bob Heilman, Secretary, and Margo Hawks, Treasurer. The election of Karen Bradshaw, Myrna Young, Bob Felts and Joe Miller as our representatives to Student Council was also made in the first class meeting. Sergeants-at-Arms Tara Glorius and Jim Wade were appointed in a later meet- mg. In October, our prize-winning float, ridden by Janet Adams, our attendant to the Homecoming Queen, took the top award in the contest. Our greatest money-making proiect of the year was the selling of address labels in February and March. Other proiects, such as bake sales and paper drives also helped add to our treasury. The Mother's Club formed in our Freshman year was activated this year and has already proven a great help. FRESHMAN CLASS The class of T960 started their year out by electing their class officers: President, Patsy Veddern, Vice- President, Harold Smith, Secretary, Mary Lou Miller, Treasurer, Sylvia Leininger, and assistant Treasurer, Pat Leisring. The members in Student Council are Patsy Veddern, Harold Smith, Jacqueline Hollis and Dennis Thompson. Also there are two members in the Safety Council, Patsy Veddern and Dennis Joyce. Our motto is Work Brings Its Own Rewards, colors are mint green and white, and class flower is a white rose. The class has been working on the following money-making projects, collecting tax stamps, selling tickets for the Holiday Ice Show, selling candy apples, bake sales, paper drive and a dance. Our largest and most successful proiect was our dance, Sleigh Bell Bop. The two projects the class worked together on were the Homecoming float and a Christmas party. Our goal for the year was a thousand dollars. We planned a budget for our bake sales, paper drive, dues, and other proiects so we could reach our goal. Wefvsqish to thank our sponsors, Miss Chapman, Mr. Ellis, and Mr. Miller for making our Freshman year so success u . SEVENTH GRADE In September the prospective class of T962 entered the portals of Reading High School. At our first class meeting we elected the following officers: Tim Hostiuck, Presidentp John Lakatos, Vice-Presidentp Carroll Tunker, Secretaryp James Bolton, Treasurer. The motto we chose is: Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Our colors are pink and white with a pink rose as our flower. The cheerleaders included six seventh graders--Sandy Weisenborn, Cheryl Stokes, Joyce Volkens, Sandy McClure, Cheryl Landy and Carroll Tunker. Dallas Maugle and Wanda Manning were our representatives to Student Council. The bake sale we held in mid-winter proved very successful, and we climaxed our year with a second dance which we shared with the eighth grade.
