Miss Ann L. Taylor, Art Super- visor of the Reading School District, Mr. Ralph A. Dornsife, and Miss Kathleen L. Reilly evaluate a vari- ety of text books in order to deter- mine which books can be used most effectively in the art and craft pro- grains. Members of Mr. Ralph Dornsife's art classes often succeeded in earning top awards or special recognition for their outstanding art work. Art Department Art-Mr. Ralph A. Dornsife Crafts-Miss Kathleen L. Reilly Fine arts, commercial, and gen- eral art courses enabled students to acquire valuable training and skills in the fields of painting, sketching, industrial designing, il- lustrating, advertising art, and clay modeling. Students who selected the crafts program were given numerous op- portunities to plan and to make a variety of creative and practical projects such as metal ware, plas- ter statuettes, leather goods, and ceramic pieces. A field trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art highlighted the de- partment's major outside activi- ties. ,V xi '-'21?9 '. Mg, ,ht Making colorful holiday decora- tions proved to be one of the popular student projects in Miss Kathleen L. ReiIly's craft classes.

1 Mr. Theodore C. Walker, Mr. Charles Keller, Jr., Direc- tor of Music for the Reading School District, and Mr. J. Carl Borelli discuss plans for the tufenty-eighth annual Evening of Music to be pre- sented in the Reading High School auditorium on Mon- day, March 1.7, 1960. Music Department Vocal-Mr. Theodore C. Walker Instruimental-Mr. J. Carl Borelli A Cappella Choir, girls' chorus, mixed chorus, mixed ensemble, and the Castlettes constituted the five choral groups at the Castle this past year. In addition, the Music Department sponsored seven instrumental units, namely the marching band, concert band, concert orchestra, brass en- semble, Woodwind ensemble, string ensemble, and the Castleairess-Reading High Schools own dance band. Throughout the year, the various choral and instrumental groups presented delightful pro- grams for school assemblies and civic organiza- tions. Music theory classes and the CastIe's choral groups were eapably instructed by Mr. Theodore C. Walker. In addition to his numerous duties as instru- mental instructor and director, Mr, J. Carl Borelli taught a number of classes in music harmony.

Health Services School Nurse--Mrs. Naomi O. Bridegam, RN. School Doctor-Lynwood Keller, M.D. , . A ix' 1 Xjair l Besides her general duties as school nurse, Mrs. Naomi O. Bridegam, R.N., supervised the extensive special health service programs offered by this de- partment. -.L Located on the second floor of the Castle are the modern health room facilities consisting of a reception room, an infirmary, a special utility room, and the oflice of the school nurse. Throughout each school day, Mrs. Naomi O. Bridegam, RN., was available for routine, spec- ial, or emergency health services or for student conferences. Special services provided by this department were the general health examinations for all students, chest X-rays and complete physical examinations for the junior class, plus audio- metric examinations and vision tests for all students of the sophomore and senior classes. X -,xi 9 N NF . Services of Lynwood Kel- ler, M.D., our school physi- cian, were available to all juniors who did not have their complete physical eac- aminations performed by their personal physicians. Free tuberculin tests of- fered by the Reading-Berks Health and TB Association served as a part of the pre- ventive health program available to students of Reading High School.
