At the first department meeting, Mr. J. Kenneth Conley introduced Mr. Byron J. Keller, the new Director of Industrial Education for the Reading School District, to members of his department. Lilly helped his first- year machine shop boys to acquire basic skills and techniques on num- erous pieces of large shop equipment. Junior printers received practical cfrperiencc through a variety of large and small printing jobs in Mr. Nor- man R. Diener's shop. Industrial Department Department Head - Mr. J. Kenneth Conley At Reading High School, two in- dustrial education programs were of- fered to boys according to their individual shop needs. Students who were interested in acquiring specialized training and experience for specific vocations were assigned to the industrial vocational course. Boys who wished a related shop program in addition to their basic academic work were advised to select the industrial arts course. This cur- riculum offered students the oppor- tunity to learn and to acquire the necessary shop skills and techniques valuable for general or Avocational use. A5 al! fNQ Mr. James W. Morrette Introduction of a new foreign language and the acquisition of a modern language laboratory highlighted this departments curriculum growth and expanded facilities this year. With the addition of Russian to the cur- riculum, Reading High School earned the distinction of being one of the three hun- dred high schools in the United States to offer this course. Other languages which were offered by the department were Latin, Spanish, French, and German. New teachers in this department this year were Mrs. Vera G. Auman and Miss Micheline Miville-Dechene.
