i L+ FOREWORD Since 1856 when four boys stepped to the platform in l-ligh School l-lall to receive their diplomas, boys and girls, many of them Readings Finest, have streamed through the open doors of our high schools. Along our own March ol Time move boys in lcniclcers with bulldog shoes and stitt-collared shirts to meet the demands of propriety, girls in long, billowing slcirts and pigtails, with pointed high-buttoned shoes, demure and more docile than our own generation. ln the early days, high school prepared young ladies and gentlemen lor college. Today college is only one ol the objectives of school. lrades lilce printing, electricity, cabinet malcing, auto repairing and machine worlq, business with salesmanship, typing, and shorthand, home malcing with sewing, coolqing, and Family relationships have been introduced into the curriculum of high schools of today. Practical application of theory is the goal of Americas education. ln this boolc we aim to talce a glance at life as it was so that we may realize that our roots are deep in the past and that though there may be superficial ditterences, we are basically lilce all those who have stepped out into the world and taken their places there. Now our steps, Firm, eager, young, are ready to carry us into the duties and problems of citizens of this city, this America, this world.
