'tl nk. VICE PRINCIPALS SPEAKING FOR JILL During the most important period in the worlds history Iill walked the corridors of this castle on the hill. To the casual observer this girl with her shining hair, her uniform of loose sweater and full skirt, her scuffed shoes and immaculate socks seemed care-free, rather indifferent, and a little too bold. But these were hard and confusing years for Iill! lack knew his place in the war: in school and out attention was focused upon pre- paring him for his task, Sometimes he was taken from school and sent to far places where Iill, un- like the Iill of the nursery rhyme, could not go tum- bling after. lill was secretly a little glad that she need not face the horror of war, but often she felt left out, unneeded and unwanted. The 'routine of school palled and seemed of no value when compared with the exciting things lack was doing. Iill plunged eagerly into all forms of war services: industry lured her and she took a part time job not only because of the wages offered but because it made her a participant in the war effort. She persisted ,in her effort at school and this Iune of 1946 she faces the uncertain and problematical future with courage, high ideals, and good judg- ment. Reading High is proud of her Iills, May they have the wisdom, the, vision and the strength needed to help build a better, kinder world. ETHEL M. HICKS SPEAKING FOR THE G. I. During the war, the impending induction of the young men, particularly those of the twelfth grade, had tremendous educational implications for the secondary school. Everyone knew the enemy was cunning, strong, and well trained. What about the boys we were teaching? Did we put them in the best physical condition? Did we teach them the mathematics, English, health, sci- ence, and history that was needed to meet and defeat the enemy? The school met this challenge. The young men on the whole were well enough educated to make victory possibl.e, yet this ex- perience has shown us that we can make the school training more effective as a means of na- tional defense. Many of the veterans have returned and more are coming back every day. The Servicemen's Fteadjustment Act provides Federal financial aid to servicemen for from one to four years of educa- tion. The secondary school, therefore, is faced with a new problem. The importance of this obligation cannot be over emphasized. This challenge has been accepted by Heading High School. At this writing more than one hundred fifty veterans have enrolled in Reading High and eighteen will re- ceive their diplomas as members of the class of l946. Sincere congratulations are extended to the veterans. May they rise to the same heights in their work for peace as they did in gaining the glorious victory. IVAN E. NEWPHER
