EARL A. MASTER PRINCIPAL SPEAKING FOR JACK On the pages before us we find lacks three-year diary. These intimate glimpses into his life and experiences will afford us real pleasure and reveal his treasured memories. That they be more meaningful, however, we should be better acquainted with Iackwhis background, his problems, his visions. lack is a cosmopolitan chap, fun-loving yet serious. He is a curious mixture of idealism and practicality, of varied experiences and naivete, of self-assurance and back- wardness, of friendliness and belligerency. ln school, he has studied some, bluffed some. By and large, he avoided advanced mathematics and science, tolerated English, enjoyed his- tory, shop work, and some cultural work such as art or music. He hasn't been too certain of his plans for the future, preferring to postpone a final decision until his return from the army. His family is typically American-honest, hard-working, patriotic. Iack's brother has served in the armed services, a cousin, in the WACS. He bought stamps and bonds, col- lected scrap, took some pre-induction work. A few Weeks ago he registered under selective service ancl is now awaiting his call. He'll serve his stint and then come back to pursue his civilian activity. He has liked most of his teachers, admired and respected a few. He has rebelled at some restrictions both at school and at home but has recognized the necessity for them. He likes Iill, has dated her occasionally, but has definitely not thought about marriage. His principal problems have been his allowance and his clothes, his deepest need, sympa- thetic understanding, his greatest accomplishment, graduation. His future is shrouded in mystery but he faces it confidently. Tomorrow, lack will be your milk-man or your lawyer, your banker or your mayor, your grocer, your butcher, your cab driver, or your doctor, your bandit or your minister. The die is cast, the decision made, but the fact that this is his diary, that he is now a high school graduate, should be assurance that his will be a constructive citizenship.
