PRINCIPAL This holocaust ol war which we have known for three and a half long years has done much to convince most Americans that it is high time the peoples of the world learn to live together in peace and brotherhood. Faced with the alternative of the frightful extermination of human beings in the event of another world conflict, we recognize the necessity for mutual understanding and appreciation among nations and races. Consciously we reject the theory of master races and accept the doctrine ofthe divinity and the brotherhood of man, Eagerly we search for the means that will enable us to develop that brotherhood. Dimly we perceive that it must be based upon mutual respect, and respect, we know, is the result of a full realiza- tion ofthe achievements, contributions, and ideals of a people. Thus our very existence depends upon our studying and understand- ing our neighbors and to that end we must dedicate time and energy. Our people must know the language, art, culture, customs, and attitudes of other peoples. This is our personal obligation, and upon our acceptance of this depends our national salvation. 'lO

For a decade it was my happy privilege to live in a community where many of the residents were of Welsh descent. Their fathers had brought to this country a Welsh- man's interest in music and his eagerness to use language correctly and artistically. Saint David's Day, the old Welsh holiday, they celebrated with eisteddfods or singing festivals. Often they thrilled me with their singing of MEN OF HARLACH and ABERYSTWYTH. My Welsh friends preserved the worthwhile old that with it they might enrich 74,5 22-if-QL vice-PRlNcrPAr. You have a rich, a glorious heritage, Class of 1945l The faith and hope, the courage and initiative, the ideals, the dreams, the cultures of many peoples from many lands have gone into the making of our America. Great are the sacrifices that have been made and are now being made to preserve this heritage for you, a heritage of freedom and oppor- tunity. But such wealth, bought at such a price, brings great responsibility. This tired, cynical world needs your faith, faith in a just and loving God, faith that men can learn to live together as brothers. This fear-ridden world needs your the new. Class of 1945, be proud of the good that you have inherited from other lands and from other people. Use it to perpetuate and enrich an America, strong and glorious. Our best wishes go with you in this noble enterprise. This despairing world needs your hope, hope in a better future for mankind, a better world, a hope which can raise men's eyes from the ground and cause them to look up and see the light. Give the world your faith, your hope, your courage, your self. Only thus can you prove worthy of your inheritance.
