OUT OF THE ORIEN- TAL WORLD WITH ITS REVERENCE FOR THE LEARNED MAN CAME THREE OF THE TEACHERS WHO HAVE HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON THE THINKING OF MANKIND: BUDDHA, CONFUCIUS, AND CHRIST. THESE MEN TAUGHT THE VIRTUES OF PEACE, OF BROTHERHOOD, OF THE GOOD LIFE. NO ONE EVER HOLDS A DOUBT THAT WITHOUT OUR TEACHERS, CIVILIZATION, AS WE KNOW IT, COULD NOT CONTINUE. WHAT IT IS HAS DEVELOPED FROM THE TEACHINGS OF THE PAST, WHAT IT WILL BE MUST JUST AS SURELY DEPEND ON THE TEACHERS OF THE PRESENT. 6
