THESE HAVE BROUGHT US CLOSER TO THE REALI- TIES OF LIFE, AND MADE US AWARE OF THE PLEASANTNESS OF OUR CAREFREE SCHOOL LIFE. WE KNOW IT IS FOR SCHOOLS SUCH AS OURS, AND FOR ALL THAT MEANS MOST TO US, THAT THIS WAR IS BEING FOUGHT. SINCE IT IS REASONABLY CERTAIN THAT THE WORLD AFTER THIS WAR WILL BE DIFFERENT FROM THE ONE WE KNOW, WE WISH TO MAKE OUR BOOK A REVIEW IN PIC- TURES OF THE SCHOOL AT LARGE IN ITS FORMAL AND INFORMAL. ACTIVITIES, RATHER THAN A CONVENTIONAL RECORDING OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL. WE HOPE THAT THIS BOOK WILL TELL THE STORY OF THE SCHOOL IN THE YEAR OF OUR GRADUATION., ACADEMICALLY SPEAKING FACULTY ni' 'A' 'k ACTIVITIES Hi' if if i' ORGANIZATIONS 'k 'A' MUSIC if 'A' i' if CLUBS if 'A' if ATHLETICS if if 'A' 'A' BOYS 'A' if i' 'ir GIRLS if if ir SENIORS Hi' 'A' ir FEATURES 'A' 'A' uk' PAGE PAGE PAGE PAGE PAGE PAGE PAGE PAGE PAGE PAGE PAGE 8 21 32 32 36 44 52 54 67 76 134 C-0lfLi6lfLi.4 I MARGARET YOST -A' TO THE CLHSS OF1943 -k As you leave the halls of your Alma Mater richer for the knowledge you have gained, the friendships you have found, the happy memories you now possess, and enter a World overshadowed by the gloom and depression of war, it is the sincere wish of your sponsors that you have the courage and spiritual strength to face the 'future with calmness and confidence. Hold fast to the knowledge that the disciplined life is bound to win. Remember that love is stronger than hate, faith greater than doubt. The Words of Louis Pasteur to some young people at the Sorbonne might well present a challenge to the class of 1943: Do not let yourselves be discouraged by the sadness of certain hours which pass over nations. Say to yourselves first: 'What have l done for my instruction? And as you gradually advance, 'What have I done for my country'?' until you may have the immense happiness of thinking that you have contributed in some way to the progress and good of humanity. DEDICATION THE TEACHERS WHO HAVE GUIDED US THROUGH THIS UNUSUAL YEAR, HAVE SEEMED ESPECIALLY CLOSE TO OUR CLASS: TO THEM WE DEDICATE THIS BOOK f ff ff 15243 C-Zami jaanaazgi f f ff ALBERT BOLDT VALERIA HOFFERT . EISENI-IAUER Only a short time ago the Arxalrna used as its theme a glori- fication of roads, with special reference to the roads from the Statue of Liberty to the Golden Gate. We Wrote then about the freedom enjoyed as We traveled across our beloved land, and of the beauty of the scenery. Today We are concerned with the problem of maintaining that freedom and that beauty. lt is Well, therefore, that you should make your contribution a record of our school in the year of your graduation. You will no doubt Want to remember the emphasis being placed upon the adaptation of the curriculum to the prepara- tion of boys for possible service in the armed forces of our country. And you, girls, for the maintenance of a high morale on the home front. As for us, We shall be most happy as We see you progress in the years that lie ahead. WILLIAM L. FINK Vice Principal Our little party was traveling to the summit of Pike's Peak. At a turn in the road, We paused be- side a yucca bush to survey the spacious skies, the amber grain, and the majestic mountains about which Katharine Lee Bates had sung. These We too admired, but We Were equally impressed by the Winding, ribbon-like roads that had carried us through valley and over hill to our present point of vantage. Truly, the panorama Was pleastng. Members of the Class of l943, you are Wise to have recorded in this book events that character- ized your school life during a period destined to be significant in our country's history. When, in the future, you stand upon a pinnacle of the years, may this record help you to look back in pleas- ant retrospect to the days you spent here at the Castle, But keep climbing! May there be for each one of you pleasant prospects ahead. FLORENCE B. BEITENMAN Vice Principal My hope for the class of 1943 is this: That, from your study of the past and the present, you have grasped firmly the thought that certain fine things are permanent in this tough old World. You are born into a tremendous period. Whether you Wish it or not, you must live up to the very limit of your powers. lt is not always a comfortable nor a happy situation, but it is a necessary one-this piece of life at its highest pitch. What endures now through all the mess created by power-hungry leaders? The same things that endured through the conquests of Alexander, Caesar, Tamerlane, Napoleon - friendship, family ties, .love of beauty, persistence, pleasure in honest labor, courage, daring. Material things may disappearg nothing can take from the human spirit the qualities, the tastes, the appreciation that make life Worth living. Z2 x MR.
