THEME EXPLANATION EVER SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME MAN HAS STRIVEN TO GAIN LIBERTY FROM OP- RRESSION. AS WE VIEW THE WORLD BEFORE US, WE REALIZE Tr-IE VALUE OF THE LIBERTIES WE ENJOY IN AMERICA NOW, NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE VISION OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS BUT ALSO BECAUSE OF THE COUNT- LESS HUMBLE FOLKS WHO LIVED BRAVELY TO GIVE THAT VISION REALITY. BUT EVEN THOUGH LIBERTY HAS BEEN ACHIEVED THROUGH THE AGE-LONG STRUGGLE OF FREEDOM-LOVING REORLE, IT ELUDES THOSE WHO DO NOT CONTINUALLY STRIVE TO RRESERVE IT. WE HAVE, THEREFORE, MADE LIBERTY THE THEME OF THIS BOOK BECAUSE, IN THESE TROUBLED TIMES WHEN THE FLAME OF LIBERTY FLICKERS IN SO LARGE A PART OF THE WORLD, WE WANT PARTICULARLY TO KEEP ITS GLOW IN THE HEARTS OF OUR GEN- ERATION, FOR NOW SAFEGUARDING LIBERTY REOUIRES MORE COURAGE THAN EVER BEFORE.

Faculty No symbolof freedom could better introduce our faculty section than the Statue of Liberty. Just as she guides refugees to the shores of our land where a share of liberty awaits them that is greater than any elsewhere, so have our teachers guided us to the shores of an active participation in the good American way of life. Yet we could never be really prepared for life in a democracy if our preparation were controlled to such an extent that it offered no chance for personal initiativeg the liberal structure of our educational system has been responsible for our teachers' guiding, not forcing, us in our selected fields. Moreover, the freedom our instructors have in teaching only what they believe explains the lack of that hypoc- risy which so easily reflects itself in the minds of the pupils. The fact that liberty was so clearly important in our schooling has caused our educa- tion to be truly interesting and serviceable.
