PIONEERING IONEERING is the impetus of progress, or one might say that progress is a natural outgrowth of Pioneer- ing. The hardy frontiersman was an outstanding example of the early Plmerican Pioneer. He was a man of athlet- ic build, clean, open countenance, and high ideals. The axe and the gun were indispensable in his fight to con- quer the wilderness. Through his efforts, our country has grown from a primitive wilderness to a nation of un- precedented greatness. The modern scientist who discovers a new cure for dis- ease, or the chemist, lawyer, or architect who contrib- utes to modern progress is as much a Pioneer as the sturdy man in buckskin. Today, one can scarcely look at a newspaper without reading of the achievements of some Pioneer in one of the many fields of human en- deavor. Pls the Pioneer of the past has laid firm the foundations of modern civilization, so must we, in the course of our future lives, carry on-the Pioneers oi the Future. 4

PIONEERS! O PIONEERS! Come my tan-faced children, Follow well in order, get your weapons ready, Have you your pistols? have you your sharp-edged axes? Pioneers! O Pioneers! For we cannot tarry here, We must march rny darlings, We must bear the brunt of danger, We the youthful sinewy races, all the rest on us depend, Pioneers! O Pioneers! O you youths, Western youths, So impatient, full ot action, lull of manly pride and friendship, Plain I see you Western youths, see you tramping With the forernost, Pioneers! O Pioneers! Have the elder races halted? Do they droop and end their lesson, Wearied over there beyond the seas? We take up the task eternal, and the burden and the lesson, Pioneers! O Pioneers! -Walt Whitman.
