NINETEENTHUQTYSIX DR. JOHN H. EISENHAUER, PRINCIPAL C When We think of Deeds of Great Men as the object of dedication of this annual, we cannot refrain from pro- jecting ourselves into the future to the time when the members of the class will be nearing old age. From this point it will be interesting to look back to the boys and girls who dedicated this book. What signs of great men and Women were then observable? Strange as it may seem, the characteristics of greatn ess in a given individual are seldom recognized in early life and often not until long after death. One reason for this is that great men and women usually live in advance of their age. People generally are skeptical of change. Iesus was crucified. Socrates was forced to drink the deadly hemlock. Galileo was sentenced to an indefinite term of imprisonment by the Inquisition. Lincoln Was assassinated. Hnd so We might continue the list of those Who paid the extreme penalty. ln the small space allotted to us we must be content t o say that 'While many great men did not pay the ex- treme penalty, their deeds Were not fully appreciated during their generation. Beware of public opinion. lt is with you today and against you tomorrow. Great men seek the truth and follow the truth withapurpose. My final word to you is: i'Do thou likewise.'
