Fourth row - Brian Jennison, Mike Elvin, Phil Forte, Jerry Burau, Greg Walker, Mike Doyle, Danny Bennett The 1978-79 Freshman bow basketball team fell 3 points short in an overtime game to a tall Palmer team in completing another undefeated season. The 16 wins and 1 loss record tied the 2nd best record for South freshmen. The 31 wins and 1 loss record is the 2nd best 8th and 9th combined record at South. Tire Freshman won 1st place in the Pittman Tournament and 1st place in the Raytown Tournament which tied a school record for tournament wins in one season. This Freshman team cxibited great talent and will surely continue to be a winner at South High. Second row -Coach Kelley Smith, Valeric Holman, Michelle Pickering, Dana Coomer, Paula Mueller, Joyce Hailey, Lisa Raymond, Pam Mueller, Shirley Cummings. The South Junior J.V. Volleyball team had the best record of any girls J.V. team to date. Their season of 8 wins and 2 losses produced 4 J.V. team records: 1. Most aces in one season - 46 2. Most spikes in one season - 69 3. Most spikes in one match - 19 4. Longest winning streak - 5 games I As many of the J.V. team members arc 8th graders, the possibility of a good varsity team next year is most probable. Hursman, Bruce Fearon, Darryl Davis, Vincent Liggett, Jon McCoy, David Garrison, Mike Green, Charlie Empson, Ken Moore, John Acker. The 1978-79 8th grade boys basketball team almost put together a perfect season with a record of 13 wins and only 1 loss. After beating Raytown for 1st place in the Pittman tournament by 9 points, the boys slipped up and lost their only game by 2 points in an overtime game to Raytown. The boys continued undefeated for the remainder of the season with an exciting win over Lee's Summit for 1st place in the South Junior tournament. Their last game was an 11 point win over Raytown. The 13-1 record tied the 3rd best team record in South's 8th grade history. The team also tied the record of 2 1st place tournament victories in a season. In the last 8 years, South's 8th grade teams have won the South Junior Tournament 7 times and have accumulated a record of 10 wins with only 11 losses. Fantastic!
